Ahead of Sarzameen, Prithviraj says his dad Sukumaran and Kajol's mother Tanuja played husband and wife in this 1980 film
After Boman Irani's directorial debut, Mehta Boys, received critical acclaim and love from the audience, his son Kayoze Irani is now about to make his directorial debut. Releasing on Hotstar, Sarzameen will feature stars Kajol, Prithviraj and Ibrahim Ali Khan in lead roles. As it turns out, Kajol and Prithviraj have a much older connection to each other, as her mother Tanuja and his father Sukumaran have worked together in a Malayalam film before.
The film in question is Thaliritta Kinakkal (1980) and was directed by P. Gopikumar and written by P. Chandrakumar. In the film, Tanuja is a widow with a teenage daughter (played by Madhu Malini), who marries Sukumaran. As time passes, Tanuja starts doubting the relationship between her husband and daughter and even takes several drastic measures, but by the end she realises that it was all in her mind and her daughter is actually in love with someone else.

While talking about Sarzameen on Just Too Filmy's YouTube channel, Prithviraj talked about this amazing factoid that he was made aware of. He said, 'When the filming began, I approached Kajol and told her, 'I think our parents worked together, but I am not sure.' But as soon as the trailer dropped for the film, people started sending me pictures and clips from the movie, and it's quite amazing that something like this happened.' Just like Tanuja and Sukumaran, Kajol and Prithviraj are also playing wife and husband, and Ibrahim will be playing their son.
Talking about his father's career and the legacy he has, Prithviraj admitted that he is a nepo kid and even said that he got his first film even when he wasn't the best guy for the role. He said, 'I know the advantage I have, and I got a start in the industry because of my father, but since then I have worked very hard to make a name for myself, and at the end of the day, that's what matters.' The actor added that he talked to Ibrahim, who he previously called a well-prepared debutante', about being a nepo-kid and told him that 'You have made it here on the basis of your name; now it's all on you.'
Directed by Kayoze Irani, the film will be available to stream on JioHotstar from July 25.
