Metro cop charged with wife's death abandons bail application
eThekwini metro police officer Qiniso Sishi, 41, who is charged with the murder of his wife Thandokuhle Mkhize, 48, has abandoned applying for bail. Sishi's attorney Musawenkosi Mkhize told Durban magistrate Sicelo Zuma he had received instructions from his client. 'He advised me to abandon bail so investigations can go ahead,' said Sishi. Mkhize, a lawyer, was stabbed many times in the early hours on July 28 at their home in Woodlands, south of Durban. Senior prosecutor Calvin Govender, who was opposed to bail, asked the court to grant an adjournment for further investigation. He said they would seek advice from the directorate of public prosecutions as this was a potential high court matter. The public gallery was packed with family, friends, community members and MK Party supporters. Outside court, Mkhize's sister Khumbuzile Mkhize said the family was satisfied with proceedings. 'We are happy because he does not deserve bail. He deserves to be locked up. We have sent my niece Aphiwe Mkhize back to school. We are not coping as a family,' said a tearful Mkhize. She said Sishi's release on bail could have posed a risk to himself and others. During his court appearance last week, Mkhize's daughter shouted at Sishi as he was leaving the dock ' sengathi ungafela phakathi ' (may you rot in jail). She told TimesLIVE she was distraught at the possibility he would be released on bail. She said she was part of a group objecting to his bail. The matter was adjourned to September 29. TimesLIVE

Smiling metro cop charged with wife's murder angers victim's daughter as she opposes bail
Bail proceedings for eThekwini metro police officer Qiniso Sishi, who is charged with fatally stabbing his wife Thandokuhle Mkhize, failed to get under way in the Durban magistrate's court on Monday. Sishi's lawyer Musawenkosi Mkhize told the court, packed with family, friends and political party representatives, he was not able to fully consult his client at the Westville correctional facility. Thandokuhle Mkhize, a lawyer, was stabbed multiple times in the early hours of July 28 at their home in Woodlands, south of Durban. 'I had an appointment on Friday to consult my client at Westville and when I got to the prison I was made to wait for two-and-a-half hours,' said Musawenkosi Mkhize. During the wait he was informed Sishi was in the medical wing of the prison where he was being treated for injuries sustained during the incident on July 28. 'After some time I was told he could not be located — no-one knew where he was. This [is the] reason the defence is not in a position to continue with the bail application. I require ample time to take instructions, otherwise I would not be doing justice with this bail [application].' When magistrate Ashwin Singh adjourned the matter, Sishi was all smiles, much to the chagrin of Thandokuhle Mkhize's daughter Aphiwe Mkhize, who shouted to him ' sengathi ungafela phakathi ' (may you rot in jail).

Family seeks justice for slain Durban attorney allegedly killed by her husband
The family of a slain Durban attorney, Thandokuhle Mkhize, who was allegedly stabbed multiple times by her estranged husband in the early hours of Saturday at their home in Woodlands, south of Durban, says they want justice. They were speaking after what was supposed to be Qiniso Thulasizwe Sishi's, first court appearance at the Durban magistrate's court on Monday. Family spokesperson Khumbuzile Mkhize said the incident had left them devastated. 'We want justice. Our sister was killed like an animal,' said Mkhize. She said the family had also visited the mortuary for the grim task of identifying the remains of her sister. 'It was a horrific sight. We are battling to even put our heads together for the funeral,' she said. When court proceedings resumed on Monday, senior prosecutor Calvin Govender said Sishi was a no-show. He said Sishi is charged with murder. 'Your Worship, this is a femicide case. The suspect, who is a metro cop, is not here. He is undergoing surgery in hospital after an alleged suicide after the murder,' said Govender. Presiding magistrate Sicelo Zuma adjourned the matter to August 4. ALS paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said on Saturday they responded to numerous calls for medical assistance in Finfoot Road in Woodlands shortly after midnight. 'Paramedics arrived to find police already in attendance and were escorted into the house where they found a horrific sight,' said Jamieson. He said it's alleged that during an alleged domestic dispute, a woman in her late forties had been stabbed multiple times. She died at the scene. 'Paramedics found a male, also in his forties, with multiple stab wounds. He was in a serious condition and advanced life support paramedics stabilised him and he was transported to hospital under police guard,' said Jamieson. Mkhize said this tragic incident has taken a heavy toll on her sister's child, who has been crying throughout the ordeal. eThekwini metro police spokesperson Supt Boysie Zungu confirmed that the suspect was employed by the city.
