Over 500 people arrested in 273 cases of fake currency notes in over 5 years: Fadnavis

The state government on Wednesday informed the Legislative Council in a written reply that 273 cases in connection with fake notes have been registered in Maharashtra in the last five-and-a-half years and 566 people have been arrested in these cases. Raising the issue of counterfeit notes in the Legislative Council, legislators Sanjay Khodke and Eknath Khadse asked how many factories producing fake Indian currency notes have been raided by the authorities. Replying to their queries, Fadnavis, who is also Home minister of Maharashtra, said that on April 17 this year, the Pune police confiscated fake currency notes worth Rs 28.91 lakh. The Chief Minister also said that as per a confidential report, the Bhiwandi crime branch unit of Thane Commissionerate raided companies which used to print the fake currencies on May 3 this year. Police recovered Rs 30 lakh worth fake currencies from the arrested accused and in total, fake currency worth Rs 45.50 lakh were seized during investigation. Fadnavis also said seven accused in the Pune case and six accused in the Bhiwandi case have been arrested and sent to judicial custody. He also said that the government has been taking action against active groups involved in the printing of fake currencies. As per the information given in the written reply, 71 accused have been arrested in 34 cases of fake currencies registered in 2020, 98 accused arrested in 48 cases in 2021, 99 accused arrested in 46 cases in 2022, 82 accused in 40 cases in 2023, 138 accused in 68 cases in 2024, and 78 accused in 37 cases till June 15, 2025.

Mumbai: As of June 15, 2025, 78 persons were arrested in the state for possessing fake currency notes in the state this year, said CM Devendra Fadnavis in a written reply to a question raised by NCP MLC Sanjay Khodke. According to the data provided in the written reply by the home department, in 2020, a total of 71 accused were arrested in 34 cases of fake currency. In 2021, 98 accused were arrested in 48 cases. In 2022, 99 accused were arrested in 46 cases, and in 2023, 82 were arrested in 40 cases. In 2024, these numbers went up by over 50% as 138 accused were arrested in 68 cases. This year, until June 15, 2025, 78 accused were arrested in 37 cases. Fadnavis further stated that fake currency notes worth Rs 28.91 lakh were seized by Pune Police on April 17, 2025. Similarly, the Bhiwandi crime branch unit of Thane Commissionerate carried out raids on May 3, 2025, and seized fake currency notes worth Rs 45.50 lakh at Bhiwandi in Thane district. He also said seven accused in the Pune case and six accused in the Bhiwandi case were arrested. The CM also mentioned that the equipment and materials used in the crime were seized and sent for investigation, and the govt has been taking action against active groups involved in the printing of fake currencies.
