DCU boss James Gunn says Batman and Wonder Woman won't start production until they have good scripts because they "deserve the best"

Now that David Corenswet's Superman is flying high at the box office and Milly Alcock's Supergirl is hitting cinemas next year, DC fans are already thinking about the next major superheroes that are set to join the franchise. Of course, we're talking about Batman and Wonder Woman, who are yet to be cast in the new DCU. When asked about when fans will be able to see these characters again, DC Studios co-head James Gunn said it's all about finding the right script. "I mean, it's not going to be until the scripts are ready. So, both the scripts are being written now, and, if they're good, then we'll go into production immediately," he told radio Urbana Play. "So it really depends on how we can get the scripts done," he added, "because the one thing I'm just not going to do is go into production without a script that I feel is fantastic, especially for those characters who deserve the best. I'd rather wait a year than go too soon". This is not the first time Gunn says the script is a priority for him. The Superman director recently revealed that he chose Supergirl as the next DCU movie because of its "incredible script", and he prioritised an unexpected project like Clayface because of Mike Flanagan's horror-inspired script. So we'll have to wait and see if Gunn loves the Batman and Wonder Woman scripts that are being written right now. Beyond The Batman 2, which is part of an alternative DC universe called Elseworlds, another Batman movie titled The Brave and the Bold is in the works. The film is set to follow Batman and his son Damian Wayne as Robin. "It's a strange father and son story about the two of them and based on Grant Morrison's run of the Batman," Gunn explained during the original DCU presentation. Robert Pattinson would not be reprising the role for this movie. In a exclusive interview with GamesRadar+ earlier this month, James Gunn revealed that "there's really no new updates" about the upcoming Batman movie, but they have a screenwriter "who's hammering away at it." There is even less news about a new Wonder Woman movie, after a third movie starring Gal Gadot was cancelled at DC. The recasting has been the source of much speculation since Gunn confirmed a brand-new Wonder Woman movie was in the works earlier this year. Gunn addressed Adria Arjona's fan casting saying that she would make a "great" candidate, but it's too early to confirm anything at this point. A separate Wonder Woman prequel series, titled Paradise Lost, is also on the way, focused on the Amazon island of Themyscira. Superman hits the big screen on July 11. WB reportedly fast-tracking Wonder Woman reboot movie following Superman's success
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. James Gunn's Superman reboot movie has landed as a resounding success, with critics and audiences alike praising the feel-good blockbuster. The success of the new Superman is now even lifting the rest of the new cinematic DC Universe along with it, as WB is fast-tracking a Wonder Woman reboot movie, as reported by Variety. The trade reports that the success of giving Superman a fresh coat of paint is rubbing off on Wonder Woman. Gunn, who serves as co-CEO of DC Studios along with writing and directing Superman, has previously named Wonder Woman as a tentpole of the new DC Universe along with Batman, Supergirl, and of course, the Man of Steel. Director Patty Jenkins previously directed two Wonder Woman films starring Gal Gadot, including 2017's generally charming Wonder Woman, and its absolutely dismal 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. Jenkins was working on a third film in the series when Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran took over the reins of DC's movie division, reorganizing it into DC Studios, leading to both Jenkins and Wonder Woman actor Gal Gadot being dropped, with no new Wonder Woman yet cast. Gunn himself recently gave an update on Wonder Woman, saying it wouldn't go into production until it has a rock-solid script, a guideline he's repeated about numerous films including the long-awaited sequel The Batman 2, which now reportedly has a script locked in. "I mean, it's not going to be until the scripts are ready. So, both the scripts are being written now, and, if they're good, then we'll go into production immediately," Gunn stated at the time. "So it really depends on how we can get the scripts done," he added, "because the one thing I'm just not going to do is go into production without a script that I feel is fantastic, especially for those characters who deserve the best. I'd rather wait a year than go too soon." Warner Bros. had no official comment for Variety about Wonder Woman kicking into gear, but judging by Gunn's statement that a reboot movie for the Amazon hero would go into production "immediately" upon the script's completion, it seems there will be no hesitation on the part of DC Studios. In the meantime, a streaming series titled Paradise Lost about the history of Wonder Woman's mythical island home of Themiscyra is also in development. Superman is currently in theaters. The Penguin season 2 gets hopeful update from HBO boss
The Penguin season 2 is "definitely possible" but nothing is certain. The Batman spinoff series - which starred Colin Farrell as the titular villain - was a success for HBO and fans have been calling for another run of episodes, but nothing is confirmed with work still underway on The Batman 2 feature film. Casey Bloys - HBO and Max's content chairman and CEO - told Variety: "The number one thing right now that Matt [Reeves] is dealing with is getting the movie going. I believe they're making progress there. "I know that he and [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] have talked about various ideas. So, could another chapter be in the future? Definitely possible. "Right now, I think the priority for Matt is the movie. But I know that Lauren is thinking of various ideas that might work alongside the movie. I think it's possible. I just don't know at this point." Casey admitted that any potential series depends fully on Colin being interested and available to return. He added: "Yes, he's the one that has to play that dark character and sit and sit in the makeup chair for several hours a day. So his buy-in is essential." Despite remaining positive about another season of The Pengion, the producer insisted he couldn't offer anything more concrete. Asked about a possible announcement, he said: "No ETA or anything like that." This week, The Penguin received 24 nominations in total for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards, including a nod in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category. There were also nods in acting categories for the likes of Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti amd Deirdre O'Connell. Despite admitting he's "open" to talks for the right idea, earlier this year Colin insisted he doesn't want to be rushed into a follow-up just because of its "success". He told Variety: "I don't want it. I don't not want it. We all left it in the ring in those eight hours. "I would hate to, just because of a quote-unquote success, have to go again and for it to be a diluted version of what people seem to feel it is, majoritively. "So I'm in no rush. I have no deep desire to do it."

Batman DCU movie The Brave and the Bold gets update from James Gunn
James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has shared a new update on The Brave and the Bold, the DCU's upcoming Batman film. The movie is one of two Batman projects currently in development, alongside Matt Reeves' The Batman 2, though only The Brave and the Bold is part of the core DC Universe. Speaking to GamesRadar+ while promoting Superman, Gunn confirmed that development is progressing. 'We're working on a script. We have a screenwriter who's hammering away at it,' he said. 'I'm very involved, and so we'll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don't.' The film will introduce a new version of Batman for the DCU and focus on the relationship between Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian Wayne, who will appear as Robin. It is part of DC Studios' Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which sets the foundation for the restructured universe. Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, has been tapped to helm The Brave and the Bold. While no casting announcements or screenwriter details have been revealed, Gunn's close involvement suggests the project is a key pillar of the new DC slate. Importantly, Robert Pattinson will not portray Batman in this film. His version of Bruce Wayne remains exclusive to Matt Reeves' Elseworlds storyline, which operates independently of the main DCU. Reeves' sequel, The Batman 2, is set to begin filming by the end of 2025 and is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. Gunn added that he currently has the script for The Batman 2 in his possession and plans to review it soon.

James Gunn Says ‘I'm Irritated by People' Outraged Over ‘The Batman 2' Delay: ‘Get Off Matt Reeves' Nuts… He Doesn't Owe You Something Because You Like His Movie'
James Gunn has made it clear in several interviews in the lead up to next month's 'Superman' that Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's 'The Batman 2' remains a priority and is still 'important' to DC Studios, despite baseless social media rumors claiming otherwise. Now in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn flat out said he's become 'irritated' by the continued outrage over the long wait for 'The Batman' sequel. 'Listen, we're supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it,' Gunn said. 'People should get off Matt's nuts because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.' More from Variety James Gunn Didn't Tell Anyone About His 'Favorite' DC Project Because It Would Be Too Easy for Another Company to Rip Off James Gunn Says the 'Movie Industry Is Dying' Because Films Are Made Without Finished Scripts and Marvel Got 'Killed' by Output Increase: 'That Wasn't Fair' James Gunn Confronts Zack Snyder Fans Trying to Tank 'Superman' Because Gunn 'Killed the SnyderVerse': 'We Will Survive' and 'It's All Right to Have an Opposing Force' 'I am irritated by people,' Gunn continued. 'I mean, it's just that thing people don't need to be entitled about. It's going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay. And Matt's not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay.' Gunn has also made it clear in several interviews that he will never go into production on a movie at DC Studios until the script is finished. The director went so far as to say that the 'No. 1 reason' the film industry is dying is 'because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.' It's been a long development road for 'The Batman 2,' which Warner Bros. delayed last year from Oct. 2, 2026 to Oct. 1, 2027. The first movie opened in theaters in March 2022 and grossed $772 million at the worldwide box office. Gunn previously defended the delay on social media by writing: 'To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between 'Alien' and 'Aliens.' 14 years between 'Incredibles.' 7 years between the first two 'Terminators.' 13 years between 'Avatars.' 36 years between 'Top Guns.' And, of course, 6 years between 'Guardians Vol 2' and 'Vol 3.'' Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said that he is pulling back a bit from using his social media platforms like Threads to debunk countless incorrect rumors about his projects and those he's developing at DC Studios. 'I've kind of quit because it just happens so often,' he explained. 'There are a couple of people, specifically, who have pretty large followings who just consistently put out false stories, just one after the other after the other, 95% of the time. Maybe once out of every 20 times, they say something that has some slight or partial basis in reality. And it gets to be old. I'm not sure, some of those people, that I'm not actually helping them in a certain way by debunking them, because you're giving them traffic, which I always do, but I think they like it. So I mostly quit.' Gunn's 'Superman' opens in theaters July 11 from Warner Bros.
