Tom Morello Joins Team Springsteen, Rages Against Donald Trump During Festival Set: ‘F–k That Guy!'

Tom Morello has never been one to mince words when it comes to his thoughts on Donald Trump. The firebrand Rage Against the Machine guitarist and solo star joined his friend and fellow rock agitator Bruce Springsteen over the weekend in giving a NSFW salute No. 27 from the stage. Performing at the Boston Calling 2025 music festival on Sunday (May 25), Morello took the stage in front of a towering backdrop that featured a series of images of the president amid a sea of oversized buttons that spelled out 'F–K TRUMP.' If that message wasn't clear enough, at one point during his set, Morello flipped his instrument up to play with his teeth and revealed another pointed message aimed at the current administration taped to the back of his guitar that read 'F–k I.C.E.,' in seeming reference to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal agency charged with implementing Trump's aggressive deportation policy. 'Bruce is going after Trump because Bruce, his whole life, he's been about truth, justice, democracy, equality,' Morello said. 'And Trump is mad at him because Bruce draws a much bigger audience. F–k that guy.' According to at the top of his set, Morello invited fans to enjoy 'the last big event before they throw us in jail.' In the midst of the Trump administration's attack on universities it claims are not doing enough to combat antisemitism, Morello also mentioned his alma mater, Harvard University, which has particularly drawn Trump's ire. In its latest actions, the administration has threatened to strip the school of more than $3 billion in grants following Trump's order to freeze more than $2.2 billion in federal funding grants for the university and threats to revoke its tax-exempt status. Morello praised Harvard's recent decision to offer a free online course called 'We the People: Civic Engagement in a Constitutional Democracy.' Morello, who graduated with honors from Harvard in 1986 with a B.A. in political science, described the class as a primer on 'basic U.S. government, understanding the Constitution, and how to recognize a dictatorship takeover of your country.' The lash out against Trump by Morello amid the president's slash-and-burn reshaping of democratic norms came after Springsteen kicked off his Land of Hope and Dreams tour in Manchester, England on May 14 by lambasting the blitz of strong-arm actions that many political pundits have deemed authoritarian. 'In my home, the America I love, the America I've written about, and has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration,' Springsteen told the crowd. 'Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experience to rise with us, raise your voices against the authoritarianism, and let freedom ring.' As is his wont, Trump replied to Springsteen's harsh words with one of his all-caps Truth Social disses, calling the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer 'highly overrated' and 'dumb as a rock.' The president continued, 'Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he's not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who fervently supported Crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who came close to destroying our Country.' On the precipice of what many financial experts say could be a ruinous global recession sparked by Trump's unpredictable, see-saw tariffs, the president continued his attacks on Springsteen over the ensuing days, adding in another of his favorite targets: Taylor Swift. On May 16, the 78-year-old leader of the free world wrote, 'Has anyone noticed that, since i said 'I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,' she's no longer 'HOT?'' While Swift has not responded to the unprovoked attack to date, Springsteen was unbowed, doubling down on his disdain for Trump on May 17, telling a crowd in Manchester, 'Things are happening right now that are altering the very nature of our country's democracy, and they're too important to ignore… In my home, they're persecuting people for their right to free speech and voicing their dissent. That's happening now… In America, the richest men are taking satisfaction in abandoning the world's poorest children to sickness and death. That's happening now. In my country, they're taking sadistic pleasure in the pain they inflict on loyal American workers,' calling Trump an 'unfit president' who is running a 'rogue government.' Bruce Springsteen releases EP featuring anti-Trump rants from UK concert

Singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen continued his criticism of President Donald Trump Wednesday by releasing a six-track digital extended play (EP) that included his political rants while performing in Manchester, United Kingdom, last week. "The Boss" included four songs on the 31-minute EP, "Land of Hope & Dreams." The songs included "Land of Hope and Dreams," "Long Walk Home," "My City of Ruins" and "Chimes of Freedom." All four songs were recorded live May 14, 2025, when Springsteen publicly lambasted Trump. During his intro to "Land of Hope and Dreams," Springsteen said it was great to be back in Manchester, calling on the "righteous power of art, of music, of rock and roll, in dangerous times." Trump Calls Springsteen 'Highly Overrated' After Rocker Labels Him 'Treasonous' Overseas "This is happening now," he added. "In my country, they're taking sadistic pleasure in the pain that they inflict on loyal American workers. They're rolling back historic civil rights legislation that led to a more just and plural society. They're abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom." Springsteen also accused the government of defunding American universities that "won't bow down to their ideological demands." "They're removing residents off American streets and, without due process of law, are deporting them to foreign detention centers and prisons," he said. "This is all happening now. A majority of our elected representatives have failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government. They have no concern or idea of what it means to be deeply American. Fox News Politics Newsletter: No Love Lost Between Trump And 'The Boss' "The America that I've sung to you about for 50 years is real and, regardless of its faults, is a great country with a great people," Springsteen added. "So, we'll survive this moment." The crowd responded with applause when Springsteen continued to pontificate his stance on the current administration. The comments went viral last week, and Trump responded by slamming Springsteen and calling him "highly overrated" Friday. This dried out 'prune' of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that's just 'standard fare.' Then we'll all see how it goes for him!" Eddie Vedder and Neil Young speak out in support of Bruce Springsteen amid Trump attacks

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder has defended Bruce Springsteen during a concert amid attacks by Donald Trump on the legendary singer. Vedder spoke out in support of Springsteen during the band's show at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, saying: '(Trump's) response had nothing to do with the issues. They didn't talk about one of those issues, they didn't have a conversation about one of those issues. They didn't debate about any one of those issues. All that we heard were personal attacks and threats that nobody else should try to use their microphones or voice in public or they'll be shut down.' He continued: 'Now that's not allowed in this country that we call America. Part of free speech is open discussion. Part of democracy is healthy public discourse. The name-calling is so beneath us. Bruce has always been as pro-American with his values and liberty, and his justice has always remained intact. And I'm saying this now to be sure this freedom to speak will still exist in a year or two when we come back to this microphone.' Springsteen previously called Trump's administration 'corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous' during the opening night of his European tour on 14 May. In response, Trump ranted online about Springsteen, calling The Boss a 'dried out prune' and threatened the musician by saying Springsteen 'ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country.' The American Federation of Musicians responded to Trump's comments, with the organisation's president Tino Gagliardi saying: 'Musicians have the right to freedom of expression, and we stand in solidarity with all our members.' Since then, Trump has called for an investigation into Springsteen and his support for Kamala Harris. He also criticised Beyoncé and Bono. Adding his name to list of Springsteen defenders is veteran American legend Neil Young, who previously shared his fears about being barred from returning to the US after criticising Trump. Yesterday (20 May), Young shared a new blog post on the Neil Young Archives website, where he defended Springsteen and Taylor Swift, who Trump has also slammed. 'Bruce and thousands of musicians think you are ruining America. You worry about that instead of the dyin' kids in Gaza. That's your problem. I am not scared of you. Neither are the rest of us.' He continued: 'You shut down FEMA when we needed it most. That's your problem Trump. STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT ROCKERS ARE SAYING. Think about saving America from the mess you made.' 'Taylor Swift is right. So is Bruce. You know how I feel. You are more worried about yourself than AMERICA. Wake up Trump!! Remember what the White House is?' He finished his blog entry by writing: 'You are forgetting your real job. You work for us. Wake up Republicans! This guy is out of control. We need a real president!' Neil Young is set to return to Europe this summer as part of his 'Love Earth' world tour, which includes dates at Glastonbury and a headline slot at BST Hyde Park.
