Muni Long Reveals How Her Childhood Self Would React to Touring with Brandy and Monica (Exclusive)
The star will join Kelly Rowland and 'American Idol' winner Jamal Roberts as opening acts for the R&B singers' The Boy Is Mine Tour Muni Long is living the life her childhood self would have only dreamed of. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the singer-songwriter, 36, reacted to securing a spot as an opening act for Brandy and Monica's first-ever concert series, The Boy Is Mine Tour. "If you told me [when I was younger] that I would be opening for Brandy and Monica, I would have been like, 'Shut up. You're a liar,' " Long said at Megan Thee Stallion's inaugural Pete & Thomas Foundation Gala in New York City. "It's funny, because I was just at Essence Fest, and they did the Waiting to Exhale tribute. I had no business listening to that soundtrack, but I know every word from top to bottom," she continued, referring to the album that accompanied the film of the same name, featuring music from Brandy, 46, as well as other artists like Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, TLC and Aretha Franklin, to name a few. Long will be joined on The Boy Is Mine Tour by Kelly Rowland and 2025 American Idol winner Jamal Roberts, who will serve as other openers. Brandy called the tour "a dream come true" while appearing on CBS Mornings in June, stating that there has been interest in the two going on the road together since 1998. Touring back then wasn't likely, however, as she and Monica, 44, were in a feud that persisted for years after they famously had a fight backstage while rehearsing for a performance at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) following the release of their hit duet. She added, "Monica and I coming together again isn't just about the music — it's about honoring where we came from and how far we've both come." Monica, for her part, said, "This tour is a celebration of our history, our impact, and the fans who have grown with us. Brandy and I have been on our own unique journeys, and coming back together in this way is a reminder of the power of respect, strength, and real music." According to Long, whose real name is Priscilla Renea Hamilton, she is "super excited" to join Brandy, Monica, Rowland, 44, and Roberts, 27, on tour, for what feels like something that's been in the cards all along. "See, a lot of people don't know, but I've been writing songs for 15 years, so I know all the girls. We know each other," she told PEOPLE. Black Promoters Collective Celebrates Record-Breaking First Half of 2025 with $100M+ Projected Revenue and Landmark Live Events
HOUSTON, July 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Black Promoters Collective (BPC), the nation's largest Black-owned live entertainment company, is celebrating a banner first half of 2025, marked by blockbuster tours, industry accolades, and a projected year-end revenue surpassing $100 million. The Collective's biggest cultural moment yet arrived with the announcement of The Boy Is Mine Tour—the first-ever co-headlining tour from R&B legends Brandy and Monica. The 24-city arena run, featuring Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and American Idol winner Jamal Roberts, commemorates the 25th anniversary of their Grammy-winning duet. The announcement went viral, with People calling it "a full-circle moment for the culture," Pollstar declaring it "the most anticipated R&B tour of the year," and Revolt praising it as "an emotional and generational reset." "We're building a movement rooted in authenticity and excellence," said Shelby Joyner, President of BPC. "The Boy Is Mine is the latest proof of how powerful our culture is when it's centered, protected, and celebrated." The tour caps a series of standout live events produced by BPC this year. In March, Jazz in the Gardens drew over 35,000 attendees and was named one of Newsweek's "Top 10 U.S. Festivals" and Miami New Times' "Best Music Festival of 2025." With performances by Lauryn Hill, New Edition, Toni Braxton, Busta Rhymes, Coco Jones, and YG Marley, the event became a defining celebration of Black music, culture, and economic power. That success paved the way for BPC's expanded footprint in the festival space through a new partnership with Hampton University and the Hampton Coliseum for the Hampton Jazz and Music Festival, featuring Anthony Hamilton, Keith Sweat, Lucky Daye, and SWV. "Our expansion into the festival space is a natural evolution of our mission to create unforgettable cultural experiences at scale," states Gary Guidry, CEO of BPC. "From Jazz in the Gardens to Hampton to the Rock The Bells Festival, we're building platforms that celebrate Black excellence and drive real economic impact." Earlier this year, BPC sparked a nationwide frenzy, uniting musical legends Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Stephanie Mills, and Chaka Khan for The Queens Tour—a cross-generational tribute hailed by Essence as "a living archive of Black greatness." The tour resumes its second leg on September 19 in Greensboro, NC. BPC also made significant moves in hip-hop, co-producing a sold-out Hot 97 Summer Jam, with surprise performances by Meek Mill, a tribute to Irv Gotti by Ja Rule and Friends, and headline sets from GloRilla, Gunna, and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. At the same time, BPC honored hip-hop's legacy through its partnership with LL COOL J's Rock The Bells Festival, proving once again that BPC can hold space for both the pioneers and the present-day chart-toppers, producing cultural moments like the return of Capone-N-Noreaga and the first-ever Uptown Records Reunion. The BPC has been very intentional in authentic storytelling, transforming concerts and festivals into cultural moments that connect artists' messages with the communities that love them. The first half of 2025 proves what happens when culture leads: sold-out shows, record-breaking engagement, and a generation of fans who see themselves reflected in it. "Our marketing approach is rooted in precision and purpose. We've demonstrated that when campaigns center on cultural authenticity, they not only drive ticket sales but also foster brand affinity and measurable community impact," explains Troy Brown, CMO of BPC. "The first half of 2025 is proof that brands who align with culture-forward experiences gain more than impressions; they gain trust." Additional standout events include the nostalgia-packed, multi-city sell-out Millennium Tour featuring Bow Wow, Trey Songz, and Omarion, as well as the October Nights: Calling All Lovers tour with October London, Tamar Braxton, and Ro James. Beyond the stage, BPC continues to lead in influence. The company ranks #39 on Pollstar's Global Top 100 Promoters list and is the only wholly Black-owned promoter on that list. Billboard has repeatedly featured BPC on its R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players and Live Music Power Players lists, and CEO Gary Guidry has been recognized as one of the top executives shaping the future of live music. With a team that reflects the community it serves, BPC is redefining the concert experience by curating culturally resonant events that foster unity, legacy, and impact. With more major announcements expected in the coming months, the Black Promoters Collective is poised to make 2025 its most powerful year to date. The 24-city trek will visit arenas in major U.S. cities including Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York before concluding Dec. 7 at the Toyota Center in Houston. Long dropped her fourth studio album, Revenge, last summer (Aug. 30, 2024), and Roberts recently notched a No. 1 debut on Hot Gospel Songs just weeks before tributing Kirk Franklin at the 2025 BET Awards. Earlier this month, Rowland was announced as The Voice UK's newest coach. 'This really is a full-circle moment,' Brandy, who landed at No. 41 on the Billboard staff's 75 Best R&B Singers of All Time list, said in a press release. 'Monica and I coming together again isn't just about the music — it's about honoring where we came from and how far we've both come. 'The Boy Is Mine' was a defining chapter in R&B, and to share the stage all these years later is bigger than a reunion — it's a celebration of growth, sisterhood, and the love our fans have given us from day one.' The R&B icons, who reunited on 2012's 'It All Belongs to Me,' announced their new tour with a cinematic short film helmed by filmmaker and production designer Ethan Tobman, who has worked with the likes of Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift. Set in a maximum sound asylum, the tour trailer finds Brandy and Monica using their powerful and 'forbidden' harmonies to break free. 'The love that 'The Boy Is Mine' continues to receive means everything to me,' Monica said in a press release. 'This tour is a celebration of our history, our impact, and the fans who have grown with us. Brandy and I have been on our own unique journeys, and coming back together in this way is a reminder of the power of respect, strength, and real music. We're giving the people what they've been asking for, and doing it with grace, love, and purpose. God's timing perfectly aligned us.' Last year, Brandy and Monica earned their 13th and fifth Grammy nominations, respectively, thanks to their featured turn on Grande's 'The Boy Is Mine' remix. Named after their duet, Grande's Eternal Sunshine single reached No. 16 on the Hot 100 and soundtracked a Catwoman-inspired music video featuring cameos from all three ladies, as well as You actor Penn Badgley. Brandy and Monica Reveal ‘The Boy Is Mine' Was Inspired by ‘Jerry Springer'
Brandy and Monica's reunion rollout is in full swing. The R&B legends stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night (June 25), just one day after announcing their upcoming co-headlining trek, The Boy Is Mine Tour. 'Twenty-seven years in the making,' Brandy said, describing the long-awaited joint tour. The 24-date run, named after their 1998 No. 1 hit 'The Boy Is Mine,' kicks off Oct. 16 and marks their first time hitting the road together. More from Billboard AC/DC Plug In Extra Stadium Dates for Australia's Power-Hungry Fans LeAnn Rimes' Teeth Fall Out Mid-Performance During Washington Concert White House Uses Usher's 'Hey Daddy' to Soundtrack Trump's NATO Return During their sit-down with Fallon, Brandy also revealed that the idea for their chart-topping duet was sparked by an episode of Jerry Springer. 'I was a huge Jerry Springer fan. One of the topics was 'The boy is mine,' and I'm like, 'Oh my God. Song idea. Let's do this,'' she recalled. The singers also reflected on their initial collaboration, Grammy win, and how their friendship has evolved in the decades since. 'We're a musical marriage, it is a musical marriage,' Monica said with a laugh. Their conversation touched on a range of moments from their careers, including their 1999 Grammy win for best R&B performance by a duo or group. 'I actually ran to the stage,' Brandy said, while Monica recalled following slowly behind in Chanel heels. 'She left me,' Monica joked. 'I was tiptoeing behind her like, 'Girl, we just won a Grammy!'' Fallon also brought up Ariana Grande's recent remix of 'The Boy Is Mine,' which both singers praised for its respect toward the original. 'I think it was how personable that she was that made us feel so comfortable. We've always been very adamant about people leaving history as it is,' Monica said. 'But the integrity is still there.' When asked if fans can expect new music, the pair confirmed they're aiming to head into the studio soon. 'We'll start working on some music immediately,' Monica said, adding that the new material could be promoted while they're still on tour. 'But no studio tour bus,' she clarified with a grin. 'That's for the rappers.' The tease comes over a decade after their last joint release, 2012's 'It All Belongs to Me,' and nearly three decades after 'The Boy Is Mine' spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track remains one of the most iconic duets in pop and R&B history. The two also paid tribute to their late mentor Whitney Houston, whom they say would've been thrilled about their reunion. 'She'd be sarcastic, like, 'Finally,'' Monica laughed as Brandy added, 'But proud!' The Boy Is Mine Tour kicks off in Oakland, California, and will hit cities including New York, Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles. Tickets are on sale Friday (June 28) via Ticketmaster.
