Afterparties There are several unofficial Mighty Hoopla afterparties that'll keep the party going into the early hours. There'll be Sweat at the Clapham Grand (Saturday, tickets here) and parties at Clapham's The Bridge (Saturday, find out more), The Duke of Edinburgh pub (Saturday, find out more) and Effra Social (Sunday, find out more). Are Brockwell Park's day festivals definitely still going ahead? They certainly are! For 2025, anyway. The last month or so has put Brockwell Park's day festivals in the spotlight, with anti-festival campaigners Protect Brockwell Park on the one side and Lambeth Council and festival promoters Brockwell Live (supported by community group SayYesLambeth) on the other. Following a court decision that ruled the festivals didn't have the correct planning permission, Brockwell Live released a statement saying the events will go ahead.

'My mother-in-law has named her new cat after my favourite baby name'
A pregnant woman has taken to the internet to ask whether it's acceptable to give her daughter the same name as her mother-in-law's cat. Choosing the perfect name for your newborn can be an arduous and taxing endeavour. With a plethora of options available for both girls and boys, parents are inundated with choices, which paradoxically can make the decision even more challenging. Some parents gravitate towards traditional, well-loved names, while others seek a distinctive name to ensure their child stands out. It's common for parents to compile a list of favoured names, taking cues from a variety of sources, such as departed family members or characters from films and television shows. A pregnant woman recounted that she and her partner had settled on their preferred name for a baby girl, only to discover her mother-in-law had recently named her cat the same, reports the Mirror. She added humorously: "But I see similar posts to this about other people stealing baby names, and I thought this would give everyone a laugh." The woman elaborated on her naming preferences: "My husband and I have a fairly long list of girl names, but I keep learning towards 'boyish'/masculine names for girls, and as a HUGE Interstellar fan, Murphy has been [at] the top of our list." She went on to say that her mother-in-law is "not a pet person" but relented to her younger sister-in-law's wishes to adopt a kitten. During a phone call while her husband was at his mother's house, he informed her: "They named the cat Murphy." Now, the couple is left pondering whether they should go ahead and name their daughter after a feline. The woman's Reddit post sparked a lively debate, racking up 1,400 upvotes and over 300 comments as people were quick to weigh in on the matter. The top-voted comment pointed out: "Murphy is a much better name for a pet than a person. Sorry." Another individual agreed saying, "I agree. It also seems masculine because it is traditionally a surname." One user added their experience: "Every Murphy I have known is a male dog. There have been several." Some chimed in with examples of other animals named Murphy they'd encountered, including a ferret and a male rabbit. A different commenter couldn't hold back their surprise: "I can't imagine looking at a sweet little baby and calling her a teenage girl saddled with that." The Redditor was fond of the name Murphy, inspired by Murphy 'Murph' Cooper from the 2014 sci-fi adventure film Interstellar. Murphy, a name with Gaelic roots, holds the title of the most common surname in Ireland, as per The Bump. Its meaning, 'warrior of the sea', has gained prominence partly thanks to the renown of actors Cillian and Eddie, both of whom carry the name Murphy as their last name.

'My mother-in-law gave cat my favourite baby name and I don't know what to do'
Choosing a name for your baby is one of the most important decisions you'll make as parents, but a pregnant woman has found herself in a tricky situation thanks to her mother-in-law's decision Deciding on the right name for your baby can be a difficult and stressful task. With so many names out there for girls and boys, parents are spoilt for choice, but this can make it harder to settle on a moniker. Some opt for classic, popular names, while others want their child to have a more unique name to make them stand out from the crowd. Often, parents make a list of names they like, drawing inspiration from various factors, like relatives who have passed away or even film and TV characters. A pregnant woman shared that she and her husband decided on their top baby girl name, only to find out that her mother-in-law had given this name to her cat. Posting on Reddit, the mum-to-be said: 'This is not that serious, and no, she did not do it on purpose (she doesn't even know I'm pregnant). "But I see similar posts to this about other people stealing baby names, and I thought this would give everyone a laugh. 'My husband and I have a fairly long list of girl names, but I keep learning towards 'boyish'/masculine names for girls, and as a HUGE Interstellar fan, Murphy has been [at] the top of our list.' She continued to share that her mother in law is 'not a pet person' but finally let her younger sister-in-law get a kitten in the house. When she called her husband to check in while he was visiting his mum, he said to her: 'They named the cat Murphy.' The couple has now been left questioning whether or not they should name their daughter after a cat. The woman's Reddit post has garnered 1,400 upvotes and more than 300 comments, with people quick to share their thoughts on the situation. The comment with the most likes reads: 'Murphy is a much better name for a pet than a person. Sorry.' Someone else replied: 'I agree. It also seems masculine because it is traditionally a surname.' Another user chimed in: 'Every Murphy I have known is a male dog. There have been several.' Others shared different animals they knew with the name Murphy, including a ferret and a male rabbit. A different user commented: 'I can't imagine looking at a sweet little baby and calling her Murphy…or a teenage girl saddled with that.' The Reddit user took a liking to the name Murphy as Murphy 'Murph' Cooper is a starring character in the science-fiction/adventure movie Interstellar, released in 2014. Murphy is a gender-neutral name of Gaelic origin and is the most common family name in Ireland, according to The Bump. It refers to 'warrior of the sea' and was made famous by Hollywood stars Cillian and Eddie, who bear the surname.

Bump actress Claudia Karvan breaks down over tragic family secret: 'I couldn't have prepared myself'
Claudia Karvan has opened up about her emotional experience filming the latest season of the SBS program Who Do You Think You Are? The Bump star, 52, broke down as she discovered a tragic secret about a family member on the ancestry series. In a new interview ahead of her episode, which airs on Tuesday, Karvan says she was 'unprepared' for the tragic stories in her family history. At one point during the episode, Karvan discovers that a long-lost relative killed himself after returning safely from the battlefields of World War I. Describing the moment as 'pretty full-on', the actress burst into tears while filming the scene. Karvan said that making the show, which explores her family history in the UK and Cyprus, and includes stories of terrible hardship, had an important message for her. 'My takeaway wasn't that the [the lives of my ancestors] were grim – it was how resilient they all were,' she told News on Monday. 'That's what blew me away. I learned a lot about resilience and how constructive and industrious my ancestors were. I couldn't have prepared myself for that.' Karvan added that her family history contains stories of strong and independent women. 'I think I imagined that a lot more of our lives were preordained by 'nurture,' but now I'm more in the camp where I feel what's reflected in my life is more ''nature''. 'It turns out I've inherited a lot, which I was surprised by.' It comes after Claudia Karvan has revealed what she really thinks about the most controversial role of her career. The Australian actress has enjoyed a decades-long career in movies and TV - but none of her roles were as divisive as The Heartbreak Kid. In the 1993 movie, Karvan plays a young Greek-Australian teacher called Christina who starts a controversial affair with high-school student Nick (Alex Dimitriades) after landing her first teaching job at a Melbourne school straight out of college. Reflecting back on the role, Claudia admitted viewers have given her their unfiltered opinions on the explosive storyline. Speaking to Stellar's Something To Talk About podcast, the veteran actress admitted she has never watched it again and said it was far from being her 'favourite' job of her career. Claudia raised concerns about how the storyline has become dated and insisted she didn't have any say in the film's direction, but was just hired to play the leading role. 'I had a great conversation with someone recently where they're like, the sex didn't bother me, and the fact that you were not Greek didn't bother me,' she said. 'It was the fact that that boy was pretty much stalking you. [They] thought it's sort of dated, which I thought was really interesting. No one had brought that up. 'But I think, yes, some people say, we [are] over-apologising for things that are done in the past, and I just think we can't overcompensate. Elsewhere in the chat, she talked about her her experience shooting nude scenes. 'So that storyline, I don't take responsibility for. I was a 19 year old girl. And it was a tough job. I felt like I was an adult, and I was playing a very adult role. 'But I was only 19 and away from home. And the content – there was quite a lot of intimacy and nudity. 'I probably wasn't that equipped to do it. I got through and I did it, but it wasn't my favourite job.' Her hugely successful career Down Under includes the hit comedy feature The Big Steal (1990) and the cult TV series The Secret Life of Us (2001-2003). She later starred and produced Stan's hit streaming series Bump from 2021 until its final season in 2024.

State trooper justified in killing Salem man at Army Aviation Support Facility, grand jury finds
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The Oregon State Police trooper who in Salem last month was justified in using deadly force against him, according to a Marion County grand jury. The unanimous decision came after the grand jury reviewed evidence of the shooting that took place on Feb. 27 when police troopers responded to a 'suspicious' person at the Salem-Willamette Valley Airport on Turner Road SE. Astoria restaurant named Oregon's best seafood spot, according to Yelp Senior Trooper Justin Oxenrider shot 22-year-old Matthew Walter Wong of Salem near the facility's security gate, prompting an investigation into the moments that led to the shooting. The incident began after OSP responded to reports of a person giving a threatening note to the guard outside the airfield. The note reportedly said, 'I will give you 10 minutes' to lay down arms. The person reporting the incident said it was the same individual who had appeared at the same location, repeatedly, in the last three days. The Marion County DA's Office shared the following information about the events that followed: When Senior Trooper Oxenrider arrived at the guard station, he could see an individual matching the suspect's description sitting on a stone bench near an airplane monument immediately southwest of the guard shack. Senior Trooper Oxenrider turned on both his on-board dash camera and body worn camera before he got out of the vehicle. He put on sanitary gloves (a common law enforcement practice), expecting to contact Wong due to the threatening note, history of threats against law enforcement, and active warrant for Wong's arrest. Once he got out of the vehicle, Senior Trooper Oxenrider yelled out: 'Hey Partner! How you doin'?'' Wong turned, stood up, and said something which is not intelligible from the audio on the body worn camera. Wong began to walk away with his hands in pockets, and Senior Trooper Oxenrider told him: 'K, you gotta take your hands outta your pockets for me, please.' Wong refused, and instead told Senior Trooper Oxenrider he would leave. Hwy 26's 'The Bump' sends cars airborne as locals fight for improvements As Wong began to walk east across the parking lot, Senior Trooper Oxenrider walked behind his marked Oregon State Police SUV and re-addressed Wong in the parking lot. As they walked southeast towards a grassy embankment, Senior Trooper Oxenrider told Wong 'No, you're not leaving right now,' and again ordered Wong to take his hands out of his pockets. Again, Wong refused. Senior Trooper Oxenrider pulled out his less-than-lethal conducted energy device (hereinafter referred to as 'Taser'). Shortly thereafter, Wong removed his hands from his jacket pocket and put his hands up while displaying a knife with an exposed blade. Senior Trooper Oxenrider asked Wong if he wanted to get tased. Senior Trooper Oxenrider deployed his taser at Wong but missed. Wong then charged Senior Trooper Oxenrider saying something unintelligible about a gun. Wong and Senior Trooper Oxenrider engaged in a brief physical struggle, and they spun. During this physical exchange, Wong was holding his knife and swiped at the Trooper while Senior Trooper Oxenrider was still holding his taser. Senior Trooper Oxenrider testified that he tried to throw Wong to the ground but was unsuccessful. Again, Senior Trooper Oxenrider deployed his Taser, but again, the probes didn't make sufficient contact for an effective deployment. The parties separated and Wong continued to walk southeast onto the grassy area between the entry driveway and Turner Road. Senior Trooper Oxenrider followed Wong, mirroring Wong's direction of travel. Senior Trooper Oxenrider testified that he was not going to let Wong leave the location because he believed that Wong was a threat to anyone in the immediate area and for the public at large. As Senior Trooper Oxenrider commanded Wong to 'Put the gun down!' Wong said 'I really don't want to hurt you' while Senior Trooper Oxenrider immediately corrected himself, and commanded Wong to, 'Put the knife down!' Wong did not drop the weapon but instead continued to walk southeast towards Turner Road. Senior Trooper Oxenrider took two shots at Wong, who walked a few more steps, and then fell to the grass. A medical examiner determined Wong died of the gunshot wounds, sharing that 'one bullet entered and exited Wong's right arm, entered the right side of his chest, exited his left side of his chest' while the 'other shot hit Wong in the right back slightly behind his right arm and exited his upper left chest.' Man pretended to be 9-year-old girl's long lost uncle, then sexually abused her, court documents say The DA's office said Wong had an active warrant for his arrest in Marion County for alleged unlawful use of a weapon. He had two prior arrests, but no previous convictions. Following his death, investigators said Wong had 'committed and attempted to commit' attempted robbery, attempted first and second-degree assault, and unlawful use of a weapon. After he was shot, a knife was recovered from the scene, according to police. 'I would like to thank the Grand Jury for their careful and thorough review of this dangerous situation. It is tragic that Mr. Wong was experiencing mental health struggles, and this case highlights the dangerous outcomes for our neighbors, our law enforcement officers and our community when such issues go unaddressed,' DA Paige Clarkson said in a statement. 'Senior Trooper Oxenrider was faced with an untenable situation not of his own creation. I know that no one wanted this outcome on that day.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
