'My mother-in-law gave cat my favourite baby name and I don't know what to do'

Daily Mirror26-05-2025

Choosing a name for your baby is one of the most important decisions you'll make as parents, but a pregnant woman has found herself in a tricky situation thanks to her mother-in-law's decision
Deciding on the right name for your baby can be a difficult and stressful task. With so many names out there for girls and boys, parents are spoilt for choice, but this can make it harder to settle on a moniker.
Some opt for classic, popular names, while others want their child to have a more unique name to make them stand out from the crowd. Often, parents make a list of names they like, drawing inspiration from various factors, like relatives who have passed away or even film and TV characters. A pregnant woman shared that she and her husband decided on their top baby girl name, only to find out that her mother-in-law had given this name to her cat.

Posting on Reddit, the mum-to-be said: 'This is not that serious, and no, she did not do it on purpose (she doesn't even know I'm pregnant).

"But I see similar posts to this about other people stealing baby names, and I thought this would give everyone a laugh.
'My husband and I have a fairly long list of girl names, but I keep learning towards 'boyish'/masculine names for girls, and as a HUGE Interstellar fan, Murphy has been [at] the top of our list.'
She continued to share that her mother in law is 'not a pet person' but finally let her younger sister-in-law get a kitten in the house.
When she called her husband to check in while he was visiting his mum, he said to her: 'They named the cat Murphy.'
The couple has now been left questioning whether or not they should name their daughter after a cat.

The woman's Reddit post has garnered 1,400 upvotes and more than 300 comments, with people quick to share their thoughts on the situation.
The comment with the most likes reads: 'Murphy is a much better name for a pet than a person. Sorry.' Someone else replied: 'I agree. It also seems masculine because it is traditionally a surname.'
Another user chimed in: 'Every Murphy I have known is a male dog. There have been several.' Others shared different animals they knew with the name Murphy, including a ferret and a male rabbit.

A different user commented: 'I can't imagine looking at a sweet little baby and calling her Murphy…or a teenage girl saddled with that.'
The Reddit user took a liking to the name Murphy as Murphy 'Murph' Cooper is a starring character in the science-fiction/adventure movie Interstellar, released in 2014.
Murphy is a gender-neutral name of Gaelic origin and is the most common family name in Ireland, according to The Bump.
It refers to 'warrior of the sea' and was made famous by Hollywood stars Cillian and Eddie, who bear the surname.

Amazon Prime viewers urged to binge 'best show on TV' this weekend

The Exorcist was cancelled after just two seasons due to low ratings, but it still has a huge following of fans who have praised it as one of the best horror series on TV Amazon Prime Video subscribers are racing against time to devour what enthusiasts have dubbed "one of the best horror shows on television". The Exorcist, a familiar tale to those who relish in frights, was reborn as a television series in 2016. ‌ Drawing inspiration from William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, the series was billed as "a modern reinvention" of the "propulsive, serialized, psychological thriller". ‌ Set within the universe of the iconic 1973 movie, it weaves a sequel narrative that nods to elements of the original story. Starring Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Kurt Egyiawan, Hannah Kasulka, Geena Davis, and Alan Ruck, The Exorcist delves into the terror of a family under siege by supernatural forces. The plot thickens as a mother, plagued by nightmarish visions and her husband's mental unravelling, seeks help for the eerie disturbances threatening her daughters, leading to an alliance with church leaders and a battle against malevolent entities. A Reddit user extolled the virtues of the show, stating: "Both seasons are worth watching, especially since they're only 10 episodes each. I found the first season to be great and the second season to be even better. It was one of the best shows on television if you ask me. The quality of it in every aspect blew me away to be honest, I was so disappointed when I found out it was cancelled." Another commented: "Bro, I couldn't believe when it was cancelled. This show caught me TOTALLY by surprise. I figured it'd be dumb AF and cheesy but NOPE. The acting is unbelievable, the music sublime, and the storyline was deftly crafted. It wasn't just was REALLY good." ‌ "I watched both seasons and thought the cast was great and it was very well written. I loved it. I just wish it hadn't been on Fox so we would have got more seasons. It was definitely one of the best shows you're not watching. Fairly original take," a third chimed in with high praise. On the Rotten Tomatoes platform, the show's first season achieved an impressive 79% rating, complemented by a nearly flawless 91% audience approval score. Yet the second series managed to outdo its predecessor with a pristine 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, alongside a formidable 90% from viewers. ‌ "The best horror series I ever watched. I truly loved the series and can't stop watching," lauded a fan. "Gripping, sucked me in straight away. Three episodes in I stopped and decided to wait till the weekend so I could binge," opined another viewer. Though The Exorcist faced cancellation due to lacklustre ratings, creator Jeremy Slater had previously hinted at exciting future prospects. Speaking to TV Line, he teased: "There may even be a potential for telling stories that are happening on branching timelines and flashbacks and different things like that." The Exorcist is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

"All of this will be dealt with accordingly and by the proper authorities as she has made some pretty serious and false allegations. "Harassment, bullying, public safety and defamation of character are serious offences and should not be taken lightly. Another added: "I feel like this level of crashout would be warranted to some extent if they were in a committed relationship, but based on what he said it sounds like she's the only person he's met off hinge." And a third said: "Idgaf [I don't give a f***] about hook ups btw but agree he's allowed to say he's not keen to continue things with her without her losing her mind like this.
