Shaboozey Giving Megan Moroney The Mean Side Eye For Crediting The Carter Family For Creating Country Music Sparks Plenty of Reactions
Source: Ethan Miller / Getty / Shaboozey / Megan Moroney Shaboozey couldn't keep a straight face when Megan Moroney made an egregious claim about who created country music, and thankfully, it was caught in 4K. The 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' singer went viral for not being able to keep a poker face, and understandably so after fellow country artist Megan Moroney had the audacity and caucasity to credit The Carter Family as the inventors of country music. It was one of the head-scratching moments during the 2025 American Music Awards that garnered plenty of reactions on social media. While presenting the award for the Favorite Country Duo or Group category, Shaboozey began the segment by reading the teleprompter, telling the audience and viewers, 'Country music has been an important part of AMA history. The very first year of this show, the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to the great Charlie Pride.' Moroney got the ultimate side eye from Shaboozey when she followed him by saying, 'That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [Favorite Country Duo or Group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.' The reactions to the moment were instant, with many users on X, formerly Twitter, basically praising the artist for keeping it real following Moroney's comments. Shaboozey did respond on his personal X account after the moment went viral, writing in a post that tries to help him save face, writing, 'The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.' It's all good Shaboozey, no need to explain, we all made the same face listening to Moroney make that comment. You can see more reactions in the gallery below. Shaboozey Defends Megan Moroney After AMAs Backlash
You know country singer Shaboozey. On May 26, he presented the Favorite Country Duo or Group category at the AMAs in Las Vegas alongside fellow country artist Megan Moroney. Reading from the teleprompter, they shared who won awards at the very first American Music Awards. "Country music has been an important part of AMA history. The very first year of this show, the award for favorite male country artist went to the great Charley Pride," Shaboozey said. Megan added, "That same year, favorite female artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [favorite country duo or group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music." The Carter Family is an American folk music group that profoundly influenced country, rock, and the 1960s American folk revival with songs like "Wildwood Flower" and "Wasbash Cannonball." One person wrote, "The gag is she was being shady or whoever wrote that was. Because why mention this now out of all years? Just saying this crap because of Cowboy Carter's controversy and Beyoncé informing y'all about the influence blacks have had on country music." When Megan started receiving hateful comments for that statement about The Carters, Shaboozey posted a comment in her defense on her May 27 Instagram post. On Megan's post about attending the AMAs, the "A Bar Song (Tispy)" singer wrote, "Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney!" "She's an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who's doing amazing things for country music and I've got nothing but respect for her," he continued. "I've seen some hateful comments directed at her today, and that's not what this moment was about." "Let's not twist the message - she is amazing and someone who represents the country community in the highest light," Shaboozey finished. Shaboozey also posted to his X account to discuss the history of country music, apparently as a response to the discourse surrounding The Carter Family and the viral AMAs moment. "When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased...," he wrote. In a second post, Shaboozey wrote, "The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike." Listen, regardless of Shaboozey's facial expressions and online debate, there's enough information out there to clear up any confusion on the history and origins of country music. I recommend checking out Ken Burns's 16-hour docuseries Country Music. If that's not your speed, I suggest reading Andrew Chow's 2019 Time article, "Black Artist Helped Build Country Music — And Then It Left Them Behind." In Andrew's article, he referenced how the Black influence on country music began with the banjo, an instrument that is a descendant of West African lutes that were brought to America by slaves. When the instrument was popularized and appropriated through minstrel and blackface shows it "deeply informed the rise of hillbilly music, a term that would later be rebranded as 'country music.'" The Black influence on country music is undeniable, and it doesn't matter if you listen to June Carter or Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. Now, go add Shaboozey, Megan, Beyoncé, and The Carters to your country music playlist and have yourself a hootenanny!

Shaboozey Explains The Bombastic Side-Eye From 2025 American Music Awards
Chart-topping country star, Shaboozey, went viral following the 2025 American Music Awards. While presenting the award for Favorite Country Duo Or Group with fellow country singer Megan Moroney, the 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' phenom side-eyed her after she stated that the Carter Family 'invented country.' 'This award went to the Carter Family, who basically invented country music,' Moroney read from the teleprompter. Shaboozey stood there with a puzzled look on his face, but took to social media on Tuesday (May 27) with a proper response. 'Google: Lesley Riddle, Steve Tartar, Harry Gay, Defoe Bailey, and The Carter Family…' Shaboozey tweeted the day after the awards show. 'When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased. The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.' Not to be confused with Beyoncé and Cowboy Carter, Moroney was referring to a group of musicians from the 20th century who many consider to be the first stars of country music since their work popularized the genre. However, they did not invent the genre. Many Black musicians like guitarist Lesley Riddle was part of those pioneering artists that helped define the country sound. Shaboozey also defended Moroney on Instagram — who faced backlash about the statement— noting that his reaction had nothing to do with her. 'Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney! She's an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who's doing amazing things for country music and I've got nothing but respect for her,' he commented on her post. The 30-year-old continued, 'I've seen some hateful comments directed at her today, and that's not what this moment was about. Let's not twist the message— she is amazing and someone who represents the country community in the highest light!' Dan + Shay took home the win for Favorite Country Duo Or Group while Beyoncé was named Favorite Female Country Artist and Cowboy Carter won for Favorite Country Album. Shaboozey Defends Megan Moroney After 'Hateful Comments' Following AMA's Side-Eye: 'Let's Not Twist The Message'
Shaboozey is clarifying his viral reaction at the 2025 American Music Awards and noting it had nothing to do with his co-presenter Megan Moroney. The country star presented the Favorite Country Duo or Group category at the AMAs in Las Vegas on Monday night alongside Moroney. This remark prompted a side-eye from Shaboozey, which turned him into an instant meme. Following the viral AMAs moment, Shaboozey took to Moroney's latest Instagram post to clear up that the shade was not to her, as she didn't write the script she read at the award show. 'Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney!' Shaboozey wrote. 'She's an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who's doing amazing things for country music, and I've got nothing but respect for her.' Shaboozey commented on social media earlier in the day following his viral reaction. 'When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased…,' Shaboozey posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. RELATED: In a second post on Elon Musk's digital platform, Shaboozey wrote, 'The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.' The Carter Family, who won at the first AMAs, was an American folk music group known for songs like 'Wabash Cannonball,' 'Can the Circle Be Unbroken,' 'Wildwood Flower,' 'Keep on the Sunny Side,' and 'I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes.' June Carter — known as June Carter Cash after she married Johnny Cash — was portrayed by Reese Witherspoon in 2005's Walk the Line. The Carter Family was not a reference to Beyoncé, who won two AMAs for her country album Cowboy Carter. Best of Deadline 'Hacks' Season 4 Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Come Out? Shaboozey Responds to Viral AMAs Side Eye Moment With Megan Maroney
Shaboozey has responded to the viral moment where he appeared to side-eye Megan Moroney at the 2025 American Music Awards Monday night after Maroney said the Carter Family 'basically invented' country music. During Monday night's awards ceremony, the two artists took the stage to present the award for favorite country duo or group. There, they honored some country stars from the past who had also been honored by the AMAs, with Shaboozey alluding to Charley Pride winning the first-ever AMA for favorite male country artist. Moroney then read from a teleprompter that 'this award went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.' The moment swiftly went viral online, and Shaboozey has now responded to the controversy on X. In a since deleted post, Shaboozey first told followers to look up figures like Lesley Riddle, Steve Tarter, Harry Gay and DeFord Bailey, and their influence on country and The Carter Family. The Carter Family is regarded as 'the first family of country music,' according to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and Riddle in particular is cited as an influence on the group for helping A.P. Carter with songs and for teaching Maybelle Carter his guitar style. Still, as Shaboozey seems to reference, while The Carter Family are often spotlighted, Black country progenitors haven't been given their due. 'When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased…' he wrote in another post on Tuesday. Shaboozey followed up his second post roughly an hour later, writing that 'the real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.' A rep for Maroney hasn't responded to request for comment. The influence of Black musicians on the country genre has become a more common topic in music in recent years, as evidenced as recently as last year on Beyoncé's Grammy-winning country album Cowboy Carter. Bey dedicated her Grammy for album of the year to country pioneer Linda Martell, who was featured on the album on 'Spaghettii' and 'The Linda Martell Show.' Ahead of the album's release last March, Beyoncé herself revealed she wanted to create the project after she 'did not feel welcomed' breaking into the country music genre. 'It was very clear that I wasn't,' the Grammy-winning artist wrote in an Instagram post at the time. 'But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive. It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history.' Shaboozey was featured on 'Spaghettii and 'SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN'' telling The Hollywood Reporter last year that his feature on Cowboy Carter 'helped amplify what I was already doing in this space,' while pointing out Beyoncé's modern impact on the genre. He of course broke out on his own not much later, as 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' tied Lil Nas X's country-hip hop hit 'Old Town Road' for the most weeks ever at Number One on the Hot 100. The song was nominated for three Grammys, including best country song and best country solo performance.
