The Scottish fishing village with sandy beach and 'hidden gem' seafood restaurant
The underrated coastal village is found in the north of Scotland. The Daily Record is back with our latest Village of the Week, and this time we are heading to the coast. Each week, we select one town or village from around Scotland and detail why it is worth a visit. May has properly begun, which means a trip to the seaside is in order. While Scotland's weather will forever remain unpredictable, now is a great time for a mini-Scottish staycation ahead of the summer crowds. In honour of the good weather we have been having lately, our latest Village of the Week is Portmahomack. It is home to an amazing sandy beach, a "hidden gem" seafood restaurant, and amazing walks. Portmahomack is a historic fishing village situated in Easter Ross. Nestled along the Tarbat Peninsula, a lovely beach runs west from the village. Portmahomack Beach is primarily sand and is backed by sea-grasses. Located within the Moray Firth conservation area, visitors can often spot dolphins and whales out on the water. The village itself is framed by an idyllic harbour. Hundreds of years ago, more than 100 boats would have called Portmahomack home—though today just a few can be seen bobbing up and down on the surface. In terms of things visitors can get up to around Portmahomack, there are some amazing beauty spots to check out. One of the highlights is the historic Tarbat Ness Lighthouse, which dates back to the early-19th century. Meanwhile, despite Portmahomack's small size, there is both food and accommodation on offer. The Oystercatcher seafood restaurant has earned rave reviews from customers, while The Castle Hotel is the perfect place to spend the night and enjoy a hearty breakfast in the morning. Keep reading for some images showing Portmahomack's highlights.
