"The Conjuring: Last Rites" Trailer Is Finally Here

Yara Sameh The Warrens are back for one last spooky journey. The official trailer for 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' shows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) back in action as they tackle another frightening case. This time, Wilson and Farmiga are joined by Ben Hardy ('Bohemian Rhapsody') and Mia Tomlinson ('The Beast Must Die'), who are new to the franchise. While the first two 'Conjuring' movies were helmed by James Wan, both 'The Devil Made Me Do It' and 'Last Rites' feature Michael Chaves in the director's chair. He has also directed other films in the 'Conjuring' universe, including 'The Curse of La Llorona' and 'The Nun II.' The screenplay for 'Last Rites' was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who shares a story credit with Wan. 'The Conjuring' movies are loosely based on real-life cases that the Warrens investigated in their career, with the sequel taking on the Enfield Poltergeist in London. To date, 'The Conjuring' franchise has grossed over $2 billion, including spin-offs 'The Nun' (2018), 'Annabelle' (2014) and 'The Curse of La Llorona' (2019), and is the highest grossing horror franchise in history. So far, the top-grossing movie of the franchise is the 2018 prequel 'The Nun,' which grossed $366 million worldwide after capitalizing on the frights of the demon Valek (Bonnie Aarons). 'The Nun II' grossed $269 million worldwide in 2023. 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' releases in theaters and Imax September 5 from Warner Bros. The Conjuring: Last Rites, final chapter of the horror franchise releasing soon

A horror film series sequel is coming to the theatre near you this September. The final instalment of the 'Conjuring' film series, titled 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' will be released on September 5, 2025. The film will conclude the Warrens' story with a focus on the Smurl family haunting and the Warrens' daughter, Judy. #Operation Sindoor India-Pakistan Clash Live Updates| Missiles, shelling, and attacks — here's all that's happening Pakistani Air Force jet shot down in Pathankot by Indian Air Defence: Sources India on high alert: What's shut, who's on leave, and state-wise emergency measures Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are reprising their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren for this fourth instalment of the main Conjuring movies. The film will explore a more personal story, delving into the family dynamics and faith that have driven the franchise. 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' takes place in 1986, five years after the events of 'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It'. The Warrens have largely retired from exorcisms following Ed's heart attack, but are drawn back in by the Smurl family haunting case. Their story gained public attention through appearances on TV programs and a book titled 'The Haunted: One Family's Nightmare'. Rebecca Calder and Elliot Cowan will portray Janet and Jack Smurl in 'Last Rites'. According to Safran, the Smurl case "percolated on a regular basis" as the filmmakers plotted the earlier films. Live Events Mia Tomlinson plays Judy Warren as an adult, and Ben Hardy plays her boyfriend, Tony. The film explores Judy's experience growing up as the daughter of the Warrens and her relationship with her parents. Tomlinson anticipated her real-world inspiration would be closed off to life-probing questions from the actress playing her, especially with such a sensitive family story lingering in her background, but she was surprised by Judy's openness. Hardy teases "some fun dynamics" that occur when Tony is introduced to the Warrens. Chaves sees Wilson's Ed as serving a Father of the Bride role when it comes to Judy and Tony. Wilson agrees that it is an accurate portrait of that dynamic: "I don't have girls, so it was my only time to act like that," he says as a dad to two boys. Flashbacks to young Ed and Lorraine, played by Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor, will also be featured in the film. Wilson feels it's a poetic choice made for this final chapter. "Whether it's dealing with mortality or dealing with where they are at the end of their career, you're forced to look in the mirror," he comments. "Who's on the other side may not be the most pleasant. Those are themes we definitely explore." Chaves explains that "Ultimately, this is a story about a family," he explains. "At its core, it's about parents and a child. It's about the experience of being a parent, and our children often mirror ourselves. They are reflections of who we are. That might be an element of the film." On the last day of filming his final Conjuring movie, Patrick Wilson didn't have some momentous cathartic moment. There was no, "Oh my God, it's all over," he says of wrapping this fall's The Conjuring: Last Rites and, with it, his 12-year stint as demonologist Ed Warren. Wilson just doesn't look at life in those terms.

Everything to know about ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum': Cast, release date, director

We wants it. We needs it. But we gotta waits for it. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (working title), the highly anticipated LOTR spin-off film from Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema, will hit theaters in December 2027. Yes, you read that right — moviegoers have to wait two-and-a-half years to see their favorite pale-skinned Middle-earth monster from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy world up on the big screen again. Read on for everything to know about the new movie, including information on the cast, release date, and director. More from GoldDerby 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' scares up a trailer, Cannes adds last-minute films; the Who plots 'farewell' tour, and more of today's top stories With a new pontiff announced, here's what to know about Martin Scorsese's upcoming documentary on Pope Francis 'I've never been on a show that got this kind of recognition': Katherine LaNasa on 'The Pitt's' success and Dana's 'existential crisis' As of this writing, only Andy Serkis has been announced as starring in the new film. And yes, he's reprising his role as Gollum, a creature who was obsessed with the One Ring (which he called "my precious"). The English actor rose to fame in the early aughts for his motion-caption work on the original Lord of the Rings movies. He won the Best Digital Acting Performance category at the Critics Choice Awards for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and shared in that organization's Best Acting Ensemble prize for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. But what about Gollum's frenemy, Gandalf? In June 2024, Ian McKellen stated he was open to playing his popular wizard again in future projects, and in October 2024, screenwriter-producer Philippa Boyens teased that The Hunt for Gollum film might include Gandalf in some form. Stay tuned. Mark your calendars for Dec. 17, 2027, as that's the official theatrical release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Warners made the announcement in May 2025, more than two-and-a-half years out from the big day. All of the prior LOTR and The Hobbit live-action films directed by Peter Jackson opened around the same time: The Fellowship of the Ring on Dec. 19, 2001; The Two Towers on Dec. 18, 2002; The Return of the King on Dec. 17, 2003; An Unexpected Journey on Dec. 14, 2012; The Desolation of Smaug on Dec. 13, 2013; and The Battle of the Five Armies on Dec. 17, 2014. Clearly, Middle-earth comes alive in Serkis is doing double-duty on the movie, as both the star and the director. It'll be the fifth feature film he's directed after Breathe (2017), Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018), Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), and Animal Farm (2025). The producers of The Hunt for Gollum will include Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens — who all worked on the original LOTR and The Hobbit trilogies — plus Zane Weiner. The screenwriters will be Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. Serkis has announced that filming will take place sometime in 2026. "We are right at the beginning of the writing process," he said in February 2025. "We will be prepping later this year. Prep takes a good chunk of time, six or seven months, and then we will be shooting next year. So, it backs into that December 2027 release date." It's been reported that Wellington, New Zealand, will serve as the production hub for the two upcoming Lord of the Rings films. When Middle-earth Enterprises was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022, a new deal was struck with New Line Cinema to make two new Lord of the Rings movies. The first is The Hunt for Gollum, and the second has not yet been made public. "We've begun to work, conceptually, on two different live-action films, the first being The Hunt For Gollum, the second one still to be confirmed," Boyens revealed in October 2024. If you haven't seen a Lord of the Rings movie in a while (or ever), you probably need a refresher on Gollum's backstory. Basically, he used to be a Stoor Hobbit named Smeagol, but when he found the One Ring by a riverbed and put it on, it extended his life and transformed into a monster. He became obsessed with the One Ring and stalked all of its future owners, until he eventually acquired it again at Mount Doom in Mordor and died while falling into a volcano. Throughout the original movies, Gollum is seen talking to himself in his unique style of speech, and often calls the ring "my precious." Don't be confused, this new film has nothing to do with the 2009 fan-made movie from British filmmaker Chris Bouchard. He created an unauthorized short film called The Hunt for Gollum for about $5,000, based on Tolkien's written works. It's currently free to watch on YouTube and has a whopping 14 million views. The plot: "Prompted by Gandalf, a ranger by the name of Strider sets out to search for the creature Gollum, who knows the location of the Ring." ‘It just worked out really perfectly': ‘The Diplomat' casting director on landing Allison Janney as the vice president

Allison Janney didn't join The Diplomat until Season 2, but had things worked out differently, she would've been on the Netflix political thriller from the start. "When we started Season 1, Allison Janney was always on the top of the mind, right? Someone for anything," casting director Julie Schubert tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors panel. "[She's] super brilliant, incredible performer, funny, twisted in the right ways, grounded — all of the things. She's been in the forefront of conversation since since the very beginning of this. And it just worked out really perfectly for this one." More from GoldDerby 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' scares up a trailer, Cannes adds last-minute films; the Who plots 'farewell' tour, and more of today's top stories 'I've never been on a show that got this kind of recognition': Katherine LaNasa on 'The Pitt's' success and Dana's 'existential crisis' Why you can't watch Francis Ford Coppola's 'Megalopolis' at home Janney plays Vice President Grace Penn and appears in the last two episodes of the six-episode second season. Scheduling the seven-time Emmy winner for those two installments was also a "process." "She was on another series at the time too, so in terms of availability, that was a question," Schubert continues. "Could we make this work? Could we figure it out? And ultimately, thank goodness we did, because, ooh, tell me she's not brilliant in this show." For her performance, Janney has already received Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild nominations. The SAG bid is the most impressive since the group does not differentiate between lead and supporting in its TV categories, and Janney made the cut alongside The Diplomat star Keri Russell. She delivers a firecracker of a monologue in the finale before a big twist in the final moments sets her up for an even bigger third season. President Rayburn (Michael McKean) has died, making Penn the new POTUS. SEE Watch interviews with 2025 Emmy contenders As a fan of the show, Schubert, who won an Emmy for House of Cards, doesn't want to know what's going to happen, but "when you're casting it, obviously you have to." Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn gives her just enough info "to understand what the needs are going to be for the character." "I feel like it's important, especially for her creative process and for the writers' creative process in general to make sure we as casting directors have all the tools we need," Schubert says. "But whoever we cast, they're going to continue to help develop those characters based on the actors that are in those roles. So things evolve as the show goes on, as the story's being told, as things unfold, and that's really exciting. An actor can help guide story sometimes with who they are." Janney, who will submit in supporting at the Emmys, playing a VP-turned-POTUS draws parallels to her seven seasons as press secretary-turned-chief of staff C.J. Cregg on The West Wing, but Schubert sees little in common between the characters besides both of them working at the White House. "I think when you actually look at C.J. and then you look at what she did as Grace, they're very different characters, they're very different approaches. And the same person is playing them, and I think that's pretty cool because you are getting an entirely different feel and a different everything. I'm sure Allison would say the same," she says. "You always have that conversation, like, will those who love The West Wing accept someone playing something very different even though it's in the same sort of genre? But in this case there wasn't that much discussion about it because she's just so good, so there was no hesitation. Everybody was all in, 100 percent. I think Allison saw the first season and she read the scripts and talked to Deborah and had all of that process. I think she was on board as well very quickly." There'll be even more West Wing nostalgia in Season 3. As previously announced, Bradley Whitford will play Penn's husband, Todd Penn. The three-time Emmy winner was another performer the team wanted from the beginning, but he was committed to The Handmaid's Tale. "It's nice when stars align and there's an opportunity for something kind of great," Schubert says. "And again, he's not playing what he played on The West Wing. And wait till you see it. It's absolutely brilliant." This article and video are sponsored content by Netflix.
