While you are here, watch the trailer of Premalu here: This comes as a disappointment to many who were eagerly waiting for the continuation of Sachin and Reenu's story. The sequel was announced in April 2024, soon after Premalu became a massive hit in theatres. But since then, there haven't been any major updates about its progress. Released in early 2024, Premalu surprised everyone with its fresh storytelling, relatable humour, and adorable lead pair. It followed the story of Sachin, a young engineering graduate from Kerala who, after not getting a visa, moves to Hyderabad. There, he meets Reenu, and what follows is a sweet and chaotic love story. Naslen and Mamitha Baiju won hearts with their chemistry. The film also had Sangeeth Prathap, Akhila Bhargavan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Shyam Mohan, and Mathew Thomas in important roles. It was backed by Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan, and Syam Pushkaran and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of 2024, garnering more than Rs 100 crore at the box office. ‘Premalu 2' delayed: Dileesh Pothan CONFIRMS; hold on Naslen-Mamitha Baiju sequel
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Fans of the rom-com 'Premalu' may have to wait longer than expected for its much-anticipated sequel. In a recent interview, actor-director and co-producer Dileesh Pothan confirmed that 'Premalu 2' is currently delayed. While the sequel had been announced soon after the original film's theatrical success, Dileesh Pothan revealed that the team has not yet moved forward with its development, and there's no timeline in place for when production might resume. 'Our next will be…' Talking to The Cue, Dileesh Pothan said, 'Our next immediate project won't be 'Premalu 2', it's another directorial venture of Girish AD.' Premalu | Song - Telangana Bommalu 'Premalu', directed by Girish AD, featured Naslen and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles and became a breakout hit upon its release in early 2024. No fixed timeline yet for 'Premalu 2' While Premalu 2 had been announced with plans for a grander scale, Dileesh Pothan's comments indicate that the sequel will take longer to materialise. As of now, no shooting dates or casting confirmations have been made. What 'Premalu' captured so well Premalu told the story of Sachin, a young guy from Kerala who couldn't quite catch a break. After his plans to move abroad fall through, he ends up in Hyderabad—not really sure what he's chasing, but hoping things will turn around. There, he meets Reenu, who works at an IT company. They're opposites in many ways, but as they keep bumping into each other, something starts to click—slowly, awkwardly, and sweetly. The magic of the film wasn't just in the romance. It came from the little moments, the humour that felt real, and the people around them. Characters played by Sangeeth Prathap, Akhila Bhargavan, Mathew Thomas, Meenakshi Raveendran, and Shyam Mohan brought their own quirks and energy, making the story feel warm and familiar—like something you've lived through or wish you had. What made Premalu stand out wasn't just the laughs or the chemistry—it was how grounded it all felt. No big drama, no over-the-top twists. Just a feel-good, charming slice of life that made audiences smile, and that's exactly why it became one of the biggest hits of the year. Naslen's 'Alappuzha Gymkhana' On the other hand, Naslen's previous outing was 'Alappuzha Gymkhana' which earned a solid 3.5 star rating from ETimes with our official review reading, 'The performances are uniformly stellar. Naslen brings a restless energy to Jojo, part clueless, part charming, all heart. Lukman as Antony Joshuva is a quiet storm, carrying his role with understated brilliance. Baby Jean's David John is endearing, while Anagha Ravi's Natasha has quiet confidence and surprising grit. Alappuzha Jimkhana may not offer the highs of Thallumaala, nor does it aim to. This is a slice-of-life narrative about kids who dream in fragments and grow up learning that sometimes the greatest win is just to stay on your feet. More than a sports drama, it's a ringside seat to youth, chaos, and coming of age. Messy, minimal, but meaningful.'

Premalu starring Naslen and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, hit the big screens in 2024 and was a massive hit. With the sequel already announced earlier, it seems fans will have to wait some more time. In a recent interview with The Cue, the film's co-producer and popular actor-director Dileesh Pothan revealed that the sequel is delayed as of now. While the film is halted at the moment, it is unclear when they will begin work on it. Additionally, the Joji director highlighted that Girish AD, Premalu helmer, would soon start work on another project under their production house. For those unaware, Premalu is a Malayalam-language romantic comedy featuring the tale of Sachin, a miserable graduate from Kerala who has nothing going for him in his life. In hopes of finding something better, Sachin decides to move out of India but fails to get a visa in time. Hoping for a change, he, along with his friend, moves to Hyderabad where their paths cross with Reenu, a new joinee at an IT firm. How their relationship develops and whether they fall in love with each other form the story, with interesting and humorous characters appearing in it. With Naslen and Mamitha in leading roles, the film has actors like Sangeeth Prathap, Akhila Bhargavan, Shyam Mohan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Mathew Thomas, and many more in key roles. As the movie was a major blockbuster in theaters with critical acclaim, the makers announced a sequel to be in the making, titled Premalu 2. While the film was touted to be made on a grander scale, it seems the second installment would require some more time. Coming to Naslen 's work front, the actor was last seen in the Khalid Rahman directorial Alappuzha Gymkhana. The sports film is slated to begin streaming on SonyLIV from June 13, 2025. Moving ahead, the young actor will be appearing in the movie Lokah - Chapter One: Chandra, co-starring with Kalyani Priyadarshan. The upcoming cinematic universe from Malayalam is bankrolled by Dulquer Salmaan, who is rumored to have a cameo appearance alongside Tovino Thomas. On the other hand, Mamitha Baiju is currently involved in various films, including Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan, Dude with Pradeep Ranganathan, and Suriya 46.

Are family dramas losing their charm in Malayalam cinema? Thrillers and action films steal the spotlight
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Malayalam cinema, once known for its strong storytelling style, especially in drama genres, has taken a huge deviation in recent times. The majority of the films that have turned out to be successes are either thrillers or highly entertaining comedy-drama films like 'Premalu'. Now, a big question arises. Has the Malayali audience lost touch with enjoying a good family drama movie on the big screens? Or should such films be played safe by releasing on OTT? 'Thudarum's success Let's start with the most recent example, the Mohanlal starrer 'Thudarum'. The film was promoted as a family drama movie, and it's a known fact that for the same reason, the hype for the movie, even though having Mohanlal and Shobana in the lead, was less compared to the action thriller film 'Empuraan'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mulheres acima dos 40: Anvisa libera mineral que estica as rugas Beleza Feminina Clique aqui Undo Thudarum | Song - Kondattam Slowly, after the first show, the initial reviews started pouring in, calling it a 'Drishyam-level' thriller movie. Now the magic happened! The occupancy rates have started soaring along with the box office collections. Keeping the mind that the movie is genuinely good and is receiving magnificent reviews from the audiences, isn't it also true that the interest of the audiences, even the fans, was ignited because the early reviews suggested that it was a thriller rather than a family drama movie? (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) ''Thudarum' comes under family drama' - Tharun Moorthy Tharun Moorthy, during his promotional interviews, had confirmed that 'Thudarum' is a family drama movie and the audience shouldn't expect anything else from it. Talking to 'The Cue', the director said, 'But what I am worried about is that we have already fixed a genre for the movie. This comes under family drama. When audiences start deducing a different genre for the movie, I get tense.' He further said, 'When we define a genre and make a movie accordingly, if anything comes beyond that, I cannot accept it—that's my nature.' This was indeed a tactic by the talented director to make the audience keep their hype level in check before watching the movie. 'Home', 'Falimy', and more A few years back, several family drama movies performed well at the box office and had also received good responses from the audiences once they hit OTT. One such film was the Indrans starrer 'Home'. The Basil Joseph starrer 'Falimy', 'Ponman', and even 'Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil' can also be classified under family movies. But are they all dependent on one factor- comedy or even thrill, not the pure emotions that classic family movies like 'Valsalyam', or even 'Kireedam', exuded? (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) 'Audiences know which film they should go and watch in theatres' - 'ARM' director Jithin Laal In an exclusive chat with the Tovino Thomas starrer 'ARM' director Jithin Laal, he said that the perspectives and tastes of the audience have changed over time, especially after Covid. 'Audiences know which film they should go and watch in theatres. They need entertainment, and the filmmakers also have an idea of what to deliver to the audiences,' said Jithin during the interview. No matter what the genre is, according to the director, audiences are in theatres for pure entertainment. 'They need their money's worth. Entertainment is the main aspect they look for when they are paying money to watch a movie in theatres. Right after a movie's trailer is released, they decide whether they should watch the movie in theatres or wait for it's OTT release.' Theatre experience matters, can family dramas cater to that? Like what Christopher Nolan said in a media interaction, 'People will always love the feeling of coming together to watch a great story,' watching a movie in a theatre is a combined experience. Earlier, a good story was enough to cater to the needs of a person who watches a movie in the theatre, now it has transformed to another level, they need a wholesome experience from a movie. As long as a movie, no matter whether it is a family drama or a thriller or even a horror film, just like what Jithin Laal said, the majority of the audiences are in for pure entertainment and nothing else.
