Eight new officers join Syracuse Police Department

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Syracuse Police Department held a graduation ceremony for the Syracuse Regional Police Academy on Tuesday morning, March 25, at Onondaga County Community College. 13 new officers graduated on Tuesday from the Syracuse Regional Police Academy. Eight of those officers will be joining the Syracuse Police Department, including Abdullah Abraham. The West Hill native says his family inspired him to become a police officer. 'They just drove me to be better because, ultimately, I want to make them proud,' said Abraham. Beyond proud to see Abraham following in his grandfather's footsteps, and other family members. 'My grandfather was 30 plus years in SPD. My uncle is currently in SPD going 17 years on and then I have another cousin in the sheriff's office,' said Abraham. Academy director, Sergeant Joseph Commisso says he is proud to see how far this year's graduating class has come. 'Watching them grow throughout the academy and how much they've matured in a generation that usually gets knocked for being less focused, they truly impressed me,' said Sgt. Commisso. Sgt. Commisso says this year's graduating class may sound small, but it's a number that they've been seeing for quite a while now. 'This is currently what we've been seeing as class sizes of 8, but that's looking to change. We're expecting bigger classes in the upcoming future,' Sgt. Commisso said. The Syracuse Police Department will be swearing in a new academy class on Friday, March 28. 'We're hoping for somewhere in the range of 19 to 27 SPD recruits, as well as some outside agencies again. So this would be the biggest class we've seen in quiet some years,' said Sgt. Commisso. As for Abraham, he says he is ready to get started and is excited to see what the future holds. 'Going with the family legacy, I would love to be a detective and then warrant squad. It's a long road ahead, but, hopefully, that's what I want to achieve,' said Abraham. Tuesday's graduates will head to training for 12 weeks. Once that training is complete, they will begin patrols.
