Tipperary Hill or Capitol Hill? Let's take a visit to Coleman's ‘brother' bar in Washington, D.C.
WASHINGTON, DC (WSYR-TV) — Walking into the Dubliner on Capitol Hill, Central New Yorkers will see something from Tipperary Hill: an upside-down traffic light with the green on top. Those not familiar with the 50-year-old pub are certainly familiar with its founding family. 'My father opened Coleman's in April 1933,' Danny Coleman told me as we sat at his reserved table by the door. Danny Coleman began pouring pints at his dad's Syracuse saloon nearly 75 years ago. He recalled his decision to move from Central New York: 'After I got out of the Army, I asked, 'What do you think: Syracuse or Washington?' Washington lost, and they got me.' It was a win because each city got a young Coleman brother and a bar. Danny opened The Dubliner, and Peter's son, Peter, took over Coleman's. 'My brother was like my best friend,' said Danny. Peter died in 2021. 'I used to talk to him at least once or twice a week. I don't know who was more full of crap, him or me.' Full of character is more accurate. Danny's proximity to power had him pouring to patrons who were power players. Tip O'Neill, a beloved Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 1970s and 1980s, was a regular. A painted portrait of Speaker O'Neill, similar to the art seen at Coleman's, hangs in The Dubliner's main bar next to a similar portrait of Danny. Within the walls, there are no labels like Republican or Democrat. Everyone is Irish. Danny told the story of when President Barack Obama visited The Dubliner for a high-profile St. Patrick's Day celebration. Danny used a well-crafted joke seemingly told before, 'Oh, Mr. President, what are you doing? Looking for your apostrophe? O'Bama?' he added a laugh in Irish brogue. Danny is now considered the founding father. Each of his children worked at The Dubliner at some point. His son, Gavin, is the president of the business that now includes other bars. Danny's nephew, also Daniel, is the general manager of The Dubliner. Daniel's dad was Peter. The Coleman charm is alive and well on both Tipperary Hill and Capitol Hill. Dublin Liberties Distillery to close next week
Quintessential Brands has been asked for comment. Staff at the visitor centre confirmed that the venue will close permanently from next week and that no more bookings are being accepted. Liberties is just the latest Irish distillery venture to either close or retrench, following a more than decade-long renaissance of the sector. In 2016, Quintessential Brands bought Dublin Whiskey Company and said it would spend €10m to build a new distillery in the capital, as well as a visitors' centre. Dublin Whiskey Company had been founded in 2012. It was renamed as The Dublin Liberties Whiskey Distillery. In 2017, Quintessential Brands announced that a total of €28m would be invested in the distillery and its whiskey brands, including The Dubliner and Dublin Liberties. At the time it agreed an €18.3m investment by Stock Spirits Group in return for a 25pc equity interest in Quintessential Brands Irish Whiskey Limited (QBIW), which owns the two whiskey brands. The investment by Stock Spirits included an initial €15m in cash plus a further deferred cash consideration over a five-year period. QBIW used the investment to complete the construction and fit-out of the Dublin Liberties Distillery on Mill Street in Dublin and to accelerate advertising and promotional investment in the brands underpinned by significant investment in stock maturation. In 2022, Dublin Liberties Distillery and the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers signed a three-year sponsorship agreement, naming the distillery a partner of the team. Quintessential Brands also owns a slew of other drinks including Greenall's Gin, Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey, and O'Mara's Country Cream. It also owns First Ireland Spirits, which is the largest independent producer of Irish cream liqueur and Irish country creams in Ireland, with a manufacturing facility in Abbeyleix, Co Laois. The company was founded in 2011 by Enzo Visone, the former chief executive of Campari, and entrepreneur Warren Scott. The latest set of accounts for Quintessential Brands Ireland Holdings show that the unit generated revenue of €22.6m in the 12 months to the end of March last year, and made a €6.6m pre-tax loss. That compared to revenue of €31.5m the year before, when it made a €1m pre-tax loss. A number of distillers and craft brewers in Ireland have come under pressure in the past year. Last month the Scottish firm William Grant & Sons confirmed that whiskey production at its Tullamore Distillery, which produces Tullamore DEW, would cease for up to three months due to challenging international trading conditions. Irish Distillers owner Pernod Ricard paused whiskey production at Midleton in Co Cork last month for up to three months.

Ed Sheeran held a surprise performance at an Irish pub in Boston on St. Patrick's Day
Music superstar Ed Sheeran held a surprise performance at an Irish pub in Boston on Monday. The Grammy winning singer-songwriter shared a video on his Instagram on Monday of his performance of "Galway Girl" at The Dubliner, accompanied by Irish folk band Beoga. The English pop star teased the appearance on his Instagram Story with a post reading, 'Meet me in the pub tonight,' over a picture of him showing off a Celtics jersey. The post was accompanied by 'Galway Girl' playing in the background and Boston tagged as the location. He added a note at the bottom saying, '(It's okay to admit you like this song today bruh).' In a following post, Sheeran showed off his "Galway Grill" tattoo, a reference to the tattoo he received during the "Galway Girl" music video featuring Irish American actress Saoirse Ronan. Sheeran also performed his hits "Shape of You," "I Don't Care" and "Nancy Mulligan." He also sang a cover of "Grace" by The Dubliners and ended his set with "Galway Girl."
