Highlighting one of Aotearoa's most significant heritage sites

Hidden among the bustle of modern day of Tauranga lies one of Aotearoa's most significant heritage sites, The Elms | Te Papa Tauranga The site has borne witness to more than 600 years of our often-turbulent history. A new book 'The Spirit of a Place' traces this legacy starting with the arrival of the first Polynesian voyaging canoes, the arrival of Pakeha, to the complex interactions that followed. Historic Natchez Stone House: Pianist's touch and antique maps

NATCHEZ, Miss. (WJTV) – The Stone House is on Washington Street near downtown Natchez. It was once a part of a larger estate and started life as a billiard hall associated with The Elms, which is across the street. In the 1850s, the billiard hall was added on to and eventually evolved into the house that is here now. Joe Stone's family acquired the home in 1877, and it's been in his family ever since. Stone gives his guests a classical piano recital as a part of the Pilgrimage tours on Fridays and Saturday evenings. Everyone gatherers in the front parlor, and Stone serenades the guests at his Steinway set before one of the two sets of pocket doors in the house. Pocket doors open in the middle and slide into the walls on either side instead of being hinged and swinging open. Both sets of doors in this house have ornamental stained glass. Easter comes to The Towers for Natchez Spring Pilgrimage The other thing I find fascinating about the Stone House isn't so much anything to do with the house, but with Stone's collection of antique maps. His journey into maps started for Stone back when he happened across a manuscript map of a plantation just south of Natchez, Laurel Hill. That set him off on a lifetime of exploring and acquiring old maps. 'I don't like later maps that show all he roads and all the towns and every county. I like the early maps that have almost entirely Native American place names. And they show a lot of the topography,' he explained. The billiard hall part of the house is once again a billiard hall. The house is full of surprises, and Stone's collection of evolving maps is reflected in his house. There is a schedule for the Natchez Garden Club Spring Pilgrimage online. Tickets can also be found online. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
