In its review, The Guardian wrote: 'The tone of this gracefully crafted adaptation of Liane Moriarty's bestselling novel is tender and mysterious, imbued with a soft literary quality.' 'The mystery is mostly backdrop to a patient, lovely drama that delves into the complexities of family, motherhood, and relationships,' Common Sense Media shared. 'Sure, it's heavy on the symbolism and the drama isn't exactly nuanced or subtle, but fans of Moriarty's brand of storytelling should definitely find themselves well engrossed by the time the first hour is up,' The Post NZ added. More Trending This week the show was finally added to BBC iPlayer, with all episodes now available to watch. The BBC's head of programme acquisition Sue Deeks said the series was 'an entertaining drama full of vivid characters, comedy and romance, with a compelling mystery at its heart'. The Last Anniversary was co-produced by Nicole Kidman and also stars Helen Thomson (Colin from Accounts), Susan Prior (Animal Kingdom), Claude Scott-Mitchell (The Dry), Charlie Garber (Barons), Uli Latukefu (Young Rock) and Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (Force of Nature: The Dry 2). Aaron Taylor-Johnson Omega Visit Sparks James Bond Speculation
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Aaron Taylor-Johnson fans think the actor is the next James Bond, thanks to a subtle hint posted to social media on Thursday. Newsweek reached out to Johnson's representative via email for comment. The Context It's been nearly four years since Daniel Craig's portrayal of Bond in No Time to Die, and the franchise has yet to find a successor. In February, Amazon MGM announced creative control of the hit films after reaching a deal with Bond custodians Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the Associated Press reported. Over the years, various actors have been rumored for the role, including Johnson, Theo James, Idris Elba, Henry Cavill and more. Past Bonds include Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Craig. Speculation surrounding Johnson once got so strong that the Bullet Train star addressed the hearsay during an interview with Rolling Stone UK in March 2024. "I can only really talk about the things I'm going to show and tell," he said. "So, The Fall Guy, Nosferatu, Kraven the Hunter. I'm here to promote those." The 34-year-old added: "I don't feel like I need to have a future drawn out for me. I feel like whatever's drawn out for me, I can f***in' do better." More Jamie McCarthy/WireImage;for EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Universal Pictures What To Know On Thursday, luxury watch company Omega announced a collaboration with Johnson via Instagram, adding fuel to the Bond rumors. "OMEGA welcomes Aaron Taylor-Johnson to our watchmaking home in Bienne," the post read. "The actor and Golden Globe winner stepped into our watchmaking home for an exclusive tour, meeting the watchmakers behind our timepieces. #OMEGA #OMEGAMyChoice" Omega has had a long-standing partnership with the Bond films. According to the company's website, "Since 1995, James Bond has worn an OMEGA Seamaster in every film. Over the years, we have also created special tribute timepieces with features that honor 007 and his legacy of genre-defining movies." At the time of publication, the Instagram post had received more than 100,000 likes in 5 hours and had more than 540 comments. What People Are Saying Instagram user @julianheusschen, in a message with 664 likes: "Bro has to be the new James Bond at this point." @watchbie, in a comment with 312 likes: "Do I hear the 007 theme?" @hi_thisisace asked in a note with 215 likes: "is this a hint ?????" @thatonebondguy: "Hello Mr. Bond, we have been expecting you." @rocco_soranno added: "New James Bond?" @jordysanz07 shared: "New James Bond !!!!" @eefjedg posted: "JAMES BOND." @chipgobbler voiced: "Bond Confirmation." @charliesansom replied: "The biggest clue yet that he's going to be James Bond." Bond experts previously told Newsweek why Johnson would be ideal to play the character. Pop culture historian Roy Schwartz said: "He's got the right look to play Bond. He's pretty but rugged, and if you've seen Bullet Train, you know he looks good in a suit." Film and TV critic Tim Stevens said Johnson is the right age: "Taylor-Johnson wouldn't be the youngest 007. George Lazenby holds that record at 29. If he's Bond for 12 years, he'll still only be as old as Roger Moore was in his first go-round as 007." What Happens Next It's unclear when the next Bond will be announced.

Netflix's latest video game adaptations finally got some updates — and my nerves are officially kicking in
'Bioshock' and 'Gears of War' are easily in my top three favorite video game franchises of all time. Nothing can ever quite dethrone 'The Last of Us' from the No. 1 spot, but these two dystopian worlds have stuck with me and I find myself replaying them more than just about anything else. So when I first heard Netflix was adapting them into movies, I couldn't help but feel excited (even if my expectations were... cautiously low). For a while, though, updates were scarce, and months of radio silence had me wondering if the projects had been quietly shelved. Thankfully, both titles have gotten some encouraging news in the past few days. Director Francis Lawrence recently told IGN: 'Bioshock is still in development. I just actually just got a draft. We have a meeting with the writer [Justin Rhodes], so that's definitely a very strong possibility as well.' He also acknowledged the uphill battle in adapting the game: 'It's a tricky adaptation, so there's lots of things to figure out and to get right. There's regime changes at Netflix, and so things stall out and get re-energized and stall out and get re-energized, and I think we're in a pretty good place, honestly.' Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter shared that 'David Leitch is in negotiations to helm Gears of War.' Leitch, who is best known for 'The Fall Guy,' 'Atomic Blonde,' and 'Bullet Train', has a knack for slick, stylized action, which makes him a solid pick for the franchise. Netflix hasn't commented on the deal just yet, but Leitch and his wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick are also expected to produce the movie alongside The Coalition. These aren't massive updates, but they confirm one crucial thing: both adaptations are still alive and moving forward. And being such a huge fan of 'Bioshock' and 'Gears of War,' I can't deny that my excitement is growing. I think most of us can agree that video game adaptations are usually hit or miss. Just look at movies like 'Tomb Raider,' 'Warcraft,' and the recent 'Until Dawn' — more often than not, they just don't land. And there are plenty more where those came from, but we'd be here all day if I tried to list them all. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. On the flip side, 'The Last of Us,' 'Fallout,' 'The Witcher,' and even 'Halo' have actually done really well. What do they all have in common? They're TV shows. I've said for a while now that video game adaptations tend to fare better in a show format as there's simply more time to flesh out the world and dive deep into the characters. That's a big reason why blockbuster versions often fail. Which is exactly why I'm a little nervous about 'Bioshock' and 'Gears of War' getting the Netflix movie treatment. It's not that I don't believe in the talent behind these projects, because they're more than capable of telling great stories. It's just that the worlds in these games are so massive and detailed, I can see how tough it would be to translate them to live-action. The underwater city of Rapture and the fictional planet Sera are practically characters themselves. Their scale and intricate lore would be incredibly difficult (if not impossible) to fully capture in live-action without losing what makes them special. Honestly, maybe some games just aren't meant for that format. I'd be just as happy seeing them adapted as adult animated series instead. Since Netflix first confirmed a 'Bioshock' movie back in 2022, quite a few things have changed, and that includes the budget. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, producer Roy Lee said: 'The new regime has lowered the budgets. So we're doing a much smaller version. It's going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.' The limited budget does have me a bit concerned that it could limit the movie's ability to fully bring this world to life, possibly making it feel less immersive. Still, I'm holding onto some hope, especially knowing that Lawrence has drawn inspiration from 'The Shining' for this 'BioShock' adaptation. As I mentioned earlier, TV shows clearly tend to work better. And while Netflix is adapting 'Gears of War' into a movie, it's also developing an animated series which I'm much more optimistic about. There aren't any details yet, but I'm confident the show will do a lot better than the live-action take. All that said, I'm still genuinely excited for these movies, even if I'm a little hesitant because these games are some of my absolute favorites. Honestly, I'd rather wait a few more years if it means they get the focus and polish they deserve. Netflix, I just have one wish: Would you kindly do these video game adaptations justice?

Streaming Tea: 'Gears Of War' Movie Director Named; First Image Of Nicholas Cage's 'Spider-Noir' Drops
Big things are coming to streaming platforms in the coming years, especially in the world of adaptations. For one, the long-benched 'Gears of War' movie has finally found its director, one who won't shy away from any action-packed goodness. Meanwhile, the first official image of the highly-anticipated 'Spider-Noir' series has been released, alongside some juicy news. All that and more in today's article. David Leitch Tapped To Direct 'Gears Of War' Movie After years of silence, a director for the proposed movie adaptation of 'Gears of War' has finally been named! After a lengthy behind-closed-door discussion, Netflix has finally secured David Leitch to direct one of Xbox's biggest game franchises. For those unaware, Leitch is known for his work in creating action-packed hits such as 'The Fall Guy,' 'John Wick,' and 'Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw'. Furthermore, it has also been confirmed that Jon Spaihts, known for working alongside Denis Villeneuve in bringing the recent 'Dune' movies to life, will be penning the script for the coming adaptation. It has also been confirmed by Netflix that the company and Spaihts will be working alongside The Coalition Studio, the Canadian game developer that brought the original franchise to life. It has also been reported that Leitch and his wife and producing partner, Kelly McCormick, will help produce this film through their joint production company, 87North Productions. The Coalition will also contribute to funding the film and help bring it to life. With all these details, one can't help but be intrigued by what Leitch and Netflix discussed behind closed doors, but unfortunately, it will stay under wraps as both parties refuse to comment on the deal. This is incredibly interesting, especially since Netflix has been trying to develop the movie since it got the rights to it back in 2022. However, the streaming giant refused to share any major updates about the production until Dave Bautista himself called out and pressured the company to release new information about the project earlier this year. We can only speculate if this long delay and eventual call-out resulted in this almost secretive discussion. What we do know is that the movie is in good hands, as both the director and writer have had an incredible track record with recent films, specifically for gritty sci-fi war movies filled with over-the-top stunts and action. How it will turn out, only time will tell. MGM+ & Prime Video Unveil Images Of 'Spider-Noir' It's been a hot minute since Nicolas Cage donned a supersuit, but it's nice to see him back in the saddle once again! As you may have known, ever since his showing in the beloved animated movie 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' as Spider-Man Noir, the veteran actor was given the rare opportunity to bring the titular character to life in its very own live-action film. With the hype surrounding the project, several behind-the-scenes and production images have already been leaked online, namely, shots of Cage in costume on top of set items, but never an official image. That is, until today. After months of waiting, MGM+ and Prime Video finally unveiled the first official shot of the highly-anticipated film at Amazon's annual upfront presentation last Monday. Though the image is in black and white to stick to the noir theming of the show, it has been confirmed that the series will be available in both black and white and colour to suit the audiences' tastes. Based on the Spider-Man Noir Marvel comic, the series is about 'an ageing and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city's one and only superhero.' Though no official release date has been announced, it has been confirmed that the series is set to drop in 2026 and will be available to be streamed on MGM+ and on Prime Video. But it won't just be Cage who appears on the screen; Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, and Jack Huston will also be there. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the series will feature guest stars such as Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster. For those behind the camera, it has been confirmed that Harry Bradbeer will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the series. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, while Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, and Dan Shear will be on board as executive producers. The fact that the show has eight – count 'em – eight executive producers demonstrates that this is going to be a big series which is setting itself up to be one that we won't soon forget. Gears of War Movie Finds Director for Video Game Adaptation
The movie may have found its director, with THR reporting that a filmmaker is currently in negotiations to helm the video game adaptation. According to THR, David Leitch is in talks with Netflix on getting behind the camera for the project. Leitch most recently directed 2024's The Fall Guy, but has also directed Bullet Train, Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, and co-directed 2014's John Wick alongside Chad Stahelski. Leitch will also produce the movie alongside his wife and producing partner, Kelly McCormick. John Spaihts is currently set to write the script for the film, with Netflix partnering with The Coalition Studio, the developer behind the franchise, for the movie. Spaihts co-wrote the last two Dune films alongside Denis Villeneuve and Eric Roth, and was also credited as a writer on Passengers, Doctor Strange, Prometheus, and more. Currently, plot details to the movie remain mostly unknown. The Gears of War franchise largely follows the conflict between humanity and a race of subterranean reptilian humanoids known as the Locust Horde following their arrival to the surface (known as 'E-Day' in the world of the game). The first three games in the series followed the story of Marcus Fenix, a soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments who leads a task force to try and destroy the Locust Horde. The game series originally debuted in 2006, and consisted of a trilogy of games that wrapped up in 2011. The first three titles to series were developed by Epic Games and led by designer Cliff Bleszinski. Following 2011, the series continued without Bleszinski, and four other games in the Gears of War universe have come out since. A new game, Gears of War: E-Day, is currently planned to release some time in the future, and act as a prequel to the series.
