BBC quietly adds Australian drama that left fans 'crying their eyes out'
UK viewers can now watch a 'masterpiece' drama based on a book written by the same author of Big Little Lies.
Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, the author of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers, The Last Anniversary is a comedy-drama 'wrapped in a gripping mystery about family, motherhood and the women who define the generations that come after them'.
The six-part series stars Teresa Palmer (The Fall Guy), Miranda Richardson (Good Omens) and Danielle Macdonald (The Tourist).
Set on the fictional Scribbly Gum Island, it's been teased the setting is a 'place of many secrets'.
After a young couple disappeared there decades earlier, true crime tourists flock to the island, however for three generations of women that call Scribbly Gum home, hold far more.
When Sophie Honeywell (Teresa) inherits a house on the island, left to her by her ex-boyfriend's great-aunt Connie, it's the fresh start she's craving, despite the unwelcome reception she receives on arrival. Single and approaching 40, Sophie is intrigued by something else Connie left her – a promise that she might finally find the man of her dreams…

When the series was first released in Australia and the United States in March, one fan said it 'left them in tears'.
In its review, The Guardian wrote: 'The tone of this gracefully crafted adaptation of Liane Moriarty's bestselling novel is tender and mysterious, imbued with a soft literary quality.'
'The mystery is mostly backdrop to a patient, lovely drama that delves into the complexities of family, motherhood, and relationships,' Common Sense Media shared.
'Sure, it's heavy on the symbolism and the drama isn't exactly nuanced or subtle, but fans of Moriarty's brand of storytelling should definitely find themselves well engrossed by the time the first hour is up,' The Post NZ added. More Trending
This week the show was finally added to BBC iPlayer, with all episodes now available to watch.
The BBC's head of programme acquisition Sue Deeks said the series was 'an entertaining drama full of vivid characters, comedy and romance, with a compelling mystery at its heart'.
The Last Anniversary was co-produced by Nicole Kidman and also stars Helen Thomson (Colin from Accounts), Susan Prior (Animal Kingdom), Claude Scott-Mitchell (The Dry), Charlie Garber (Barons), Uli Latukefu (Young Rock) and Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (Force of Nature: The Dry 2).

If viewers are caught watching live content without a TV licence, they could be fined up to £1,000. The majority of Disney+ content remains exempt from the TV Licence fee, as long as it is not being broadcast live. These are the occasions when you do not need a TV Licence. Do I need a TV Licence? For those aged 75 or over who are in receipt of Pension Credit, the TV Licence can be obtained for free rather than costing £174.50. Guidance provided by TV Licensing says: 'Free TV Licences are only available if you're 75 or over and you, or your partner living at the same address, are receiving Pension Credit. 'If you think you're eligible for a free licence but can't apply online, please call 0300 790 6117* and speak to one of our advisors to request an application form (our lines are open between 8.30am and 6.30pm, from Monday to Friday). 'Once we've received your application it may take a few weeks to process. If there are any problems we'll write to let you know. We may also call you if you have given us your phone number. 'There are separate arrangements in place for over 75s on the Isle of Man, the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey.' How to get a refund on your TV Licence Even if you do not meet the eligibility criteria for a free TV Licence you may be able to get some money back on yours, so long as it is no longer needed. RECOMMENDED READING: If you have already purchased a TV licence but do not watch or record live TV, or stream BBC iPlayer, you could be entitled to a refund worth £174.50. Households across the UK can apply for a refund if you won't need your licence again before it expires, and you have at least one complete month left, or the licence fee for you expired less than two years ago. All four episodes of 'excellent' true crime drama available to stream on BBC
A new German true crime drama, The Black Forest Murders, has arrived on BBC iPlayer. The synopsis for the four-episode series reads: 'The clock is ticking… When a woman is bludgeoned to death, detectives face mounting pressure to crack the case and catch a killer.' And is described as an 'intense crime drama inspired by real-life cases.' The show is based on the non-fiction Walter Roth book which follows a 2016 police investigation into the mysterious murders of two young women in the south of Germany. In the show we see Senior Detective Barbara Kramer (Nina Kunzendorf) of the Lauburg police and her team, including Thomas Riedle (Tilman Strauß), embark on an investigation to apprehend the perpetrator. But as they hit dead-end after dead-end and little success through talking to witnesses and gathering evidence, the police face 'mounting pressure' to provide answers. Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, called the show an 'authentic and compelling crime series focussing on the work of a meticulous investigative team.' She added: 'As well as being a gripping murder mystery, the series offers a detailed look at the challenges of solving complex crimes, and the psychological toll on those involved in such high-stakes investigations.' 'I watched the entire series in one sitting and thought it was excellent. The meticulous investigation was amazing. Nina Kunzendorf was at her best as a fair and likeable boss in a strong team,'Sylvia Strobl praised on Google reviews. 'I found this four-part series extremely good. It was exciting, with good dialogue… and a very good portrayal of a real series of murders. The actors did a very good job, especially Ms. Kramer, who acted convincingly. It was a glimpse behind the scenes of a special investigation unit,' Karen Sabine Feuerhahm added. 'A wonderfully authentic and unpretentious narrative, a crime story like you'd only wish for, not cluttered with ridiculous subplots and overly contrived action. A fantastic team around Nina Kunzendorfer, who always remains believable,' Rike Straub echoed. The Guardian has a slightly cooler, but still praiseworthy, take, writing: ' Its attention to every single moving part means that the drama itself moves very slowly, and it is not so much a thriller as a satisfying puzzle, steadily coming together. Not a bad drama, then, but not a revolutionary one, either.' More Trending Elsewhere, The Sydney Morning Herald praised the drama as 'outstanding.' 'There are no grand deductive leaps, no cat-and-mouse interviews with a prime suspect. This is a gripping procedural founded on detail and diligence,' the publication added. Both also compared the show to Netflix's Swedish drama The Breakthrough, which also follows the story of a 'shocking double homicide which goes unsolved for 16 years.'
