Tobacco shops targeted in shootings, firebombing, across Perth
A Perth vape store was firebombed on Monday morning – the latest in a series of incidents targeting tobacco businesses across the metropolitan area, raising concerns that the Victorian tobacco wars have reached WA. WA Police are investigating whether three shootings across the weekend, and now the firebombing, are linked. A smoke shop in Cannington was targeted twice, with shots fired at the Cecil Avenue store around 1am on Saturday, and again at around 4am on Sunday. A 27-year-old security guard inside the store managed to escape uninjured. Two people on off-road motorbikes were seen on CCTV in the vicinity during Saturday's shooting, while two people in a black Holden Barina were seen nearby Sunday's shooting. A similar vehicle was later found burnt out, 10 kilometres away in Martin. A malicious warning was written on the side if the store, later covered by tape. More than 25 kilometres away, Ballajura pub The Firkin was also shot at with bullets hitting the windows and door, but the owner said he believed the intended target was a neighbouring tobacco store. On Monday morning, 9 News Perth reported that neighbouring store – the Candy Station – was firebombed, with a Molotov cocktail thrown at it around 4am.
