Detroit Red Wings' Marco Kasper scores twice on Day 8 action at 2025 World Championship
Detroit Red Wings forward Marco Kasper delivered a standout performance in his latest outing at the 2025 World Championship. The 21-year-old scored twice May 16 to help his native Austria bank a 5-2 victory over France at Avicii Arena in Stockholm on Day 8 of the international event. The tournament runs through May 25 in Sweden and Herning, Denmark. Advertisement 'It was an interesting game," Kasper told the International Ice Hockey Federation website. "We came out strong, got goals early which was huge for us. It was a good win for us, and we're happy with that. We'll try to stay focused on the next game and not look too far ahead." DAY 7 ACTION: How Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, other Red Wings fared at World Championship It was Austria's first regulation victory at the tournament. They banked three points to reach five total after five games, keeping them within striking distance of making the top four in their group and advancing to the quarterfinals. For Kasper, the Wings' first-round pick in 2022 (at No. 8 overall), the performance built on a strong 2025 that saw him record 19 goals and 18 assists in 77 games his rookie season in the NHL. After being pretty much a bit player the first half, he thrived in the second half and rose to center the Wings' second line. Overall, Kasper has four goals and an assist in five games at the tournament. Contact Helene St. James at hstjames@ Follow her on Twitter @helenestjames. How Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, other Detroit Red Wings fared on Day 6 of World Championship
A Detroit Red Wings prospect helped push the U.S. to overtime to claim some much-needed points at the World Championship, and a Red Wings regular helped his country dominate. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, fresh off recording an assist in his 2025 debut at the elite international tournament, added a pair of helpers May 14 in his native Norway's match against the Americans. Advertisement In later action, Lucas Raymond was among the scorers as his native Sweden walloped Latvia, 6-0. Raymond also had an assist as Sweden moved into first place in Group A. CALIFORNIA DREAMIN': Ken Holland, legendary former Detroit Red Wings general manager, accepts L.A. Kings GM job In Group B action, the U.S. needed overtime to prevail, 6-5, at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, Denmark. That put the U.S. in third place at the event that runs through May 25 in Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden. The Wings selected Brandsegg-Nygård (6 feet 1, 207 pounds) at No. 15 in last summer's draft. He played in 2024-25 for Skellefteå in the Swedish Hockey League, joining the Grand Rapids Griffins in mid-April after his Swedish club was eliminated from their playoffs. Advertisement Brandsegg-Nygård assisted on Norway's first goal, in the first period. He was also on the ice late in the third period to set up a second goal in the final couple minutes of the third period, which forced the game into an extra period. That kind of poise under tremendous pressure is a terrific sign for the Wings, who see Brandsegg-Nygård as a key part of the rebuild. Brandsegg-Nygård has three points in two games at the 2025 World Championship. Contact Helene St. James at hstjames@ Follow her on Twitter @helenestjames. Detroit Red Wings call up goaltender Sebastian Cossa under emergency conditions
DENVER — A day after losing Petr Mrazek to injury, the Detroit Red Wings called up goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa. The team listed the call-up as under emergency conditions, though both Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot are also on the team. A team can only designate a call-up as an emergency if it does not have the required personnel available at a certain spot, such as the two goaltenders needed to dress for a game. The Wings did not hold a morning skate Tuesday at Ball Arena, ahead of their evening game against the Colorado Avalanche. Lyon was in net for Monday's 5-1 victory at Utah Hockey Club, taking over after Mrazek suffered an undisclosed injury 1:36 into the game. Immediately following that game, coach Todd McLellan indicated Talbot would start against the Avalanche. More: Fearless, professional (and Pearl Jam fan) Alex Lyon shows Red Wings he's still alive This is Cossa's second stint of the season with the Wings. The No. 15 selection from the 2021 draft won his NHL debut on Dec. 9 against the Buffalo Sabres, including turning away two of three shootout attempts. Cossa, 22, has posted a 19-11-5 record with a 2.38 goals-against average, a 0.913 save percentage and one shutout in 35 appearances with the Griffins during the 2024-25 season. Cossa spent the entire 2023-24 campaign with the Griffins, logging a 22-9-9 record with a 2.41 goals-against average, a 0.913 save percentage and two shutouts in 40 regular-season appearances.
