JOHANNESBURG – South Africa's biggest gaming tournament is breaking down barriers in the eSports scene, offering gamers of all levels a chance to compete. The 2025 MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience aims to democratise gaming, making eSports more accessible while growing a diverse, connected gaming community across the country through their new initiative. 'So what we're doing in the space is we're trying to democratize gaming and eSports. So we deploy all of the kit, we deploy all of the equipment. We sit and run all of these national tournaments, and it costs you absolutely nothing. There's no pay to play, there are no qualifications that you need. You don't need any hardware. You don't even need connectivity. All you need to do is rock up where we are, and there's an opportunity for you to get exposed to this type of culture, play, socialise, engage, and maybe walk away with a 50,000 Rand gaming PC. So it's fun,' said Senior Specialist for gaming at MTN gaming and eSports, Brad Kirby. Over five months, eight Hyprop shopping centres such as Rosebank Mall, The Glen, Canal Walk and Somerset Mall will play host to a mix of online qualifiers and live in-mall events. The pop-up offers everything from football simulations to VR rhythm battles. A new player can play the same game as an experienced player, with all ages playing alongside each other. 'This events idea was always, how can we bridge the that sort of divide between the casual person you know, generally interested in gaming, who maybe wants to compete and win something, and then the serious players, who are genuinely very good players and deserve the opportunity to be showcased in front of, you know, audiences and hopefully the media' said African Cyber Gaming League founder Clinton O'Shea. This year, the initiative sees the return of the EAFC 25™ National Football Tournament and the debut of the MTN Beat Saber Challenge, allowing gamers to chase two national titles. The top contenders will face off in the National Finals at Canal Walk from 17 to 21 September, with R50,000 on the line in the EAFC 25™ Football Final and more prizes up for grabs in the Beat Saber showdown. Glasgow city centre road closed as sinkhole discovered
The Glasgow Times reported last week that the road was shut amid what was thought to have been a burst water main. Now, St Vincent Street has been sealed off between Newton Street and Elmbank Street as the cause of the sinkhole is investigated. Scottish Water has confirmed that they are carrying out an emergency sewer repair on St Vincent Street in Glasgow after a sinkhole appeared in the eastbound carriageway outside the Scottish Power building. To allow this essential work to be carried out safely, the publicly-owned utility have closed the eastbound section of St Vincent Street between Newton Street and Elmbank Street. The cause of the sinkhole is not yet known, and the duration of the repair will depend on the outcome of further investigations. A Scottish Water Spokesperson said, 'We're working hard to investigate and fix this issue as quickly and safely as possible to help minimise disruption. 'We are also aware of upcoming events in the area, including The Lloyd's Tour of Britian Women cycle race this Sunday and the Men's 10K next weekend. We're in discussions with the organisers, but both events are still expected to go ahead. The road is currently closed eastbound (Image: Scottish Water) READ MORE: How Scottish folk band's tune The Glen has become remixed viral TikTok hit song 'We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding while we carry out this essential repair.' The Glen, Haverfordwest, celebrates remarkable achievement
The Glen in Haverfordwest has raised £1,234 for the Wales Air Ambulance Service. The venue has now raised a total of £5,000 for the charity, which relies on public donations to raise the £11.2 million required every year to keep its helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road. The Glen held a fundraising evening with Welsh international prop Rob Evans and British and Irish Lions hooker Ken Owens. Around 55 people attended the event, which included a charity auction for a grand slam rugby jersey. Landlord Tom Slater, who plays for Narberth RFC, said: "It was a really good evening and everyone enjoyed. "The players talked about their careers, and we held an auction. "I'd like to thank everyone for supporting our Wales Air Ambulance fundraising events. "I just do my best to help out and raise funds for the charity. "I live on a farm and we're very rural and you never know if you, or someone you know, will need the Wales Air Ambulance's help. "It's an essential service and I know people whose lives have been saved by the Wales Air Ambulance." The Glen also held an Easter hamper raffle which raised £200 for the charity. Mike May, west Wales regional fundraising manager for Wales Air Ambulance, said: "We are always touched when people or businesses continue to raise funds for our charity. "The Glen has supported the Wales Air Ambulance for many years, this year they raised an incredible £1,234 which will help us to meet our yearly fundraising target of £11.2 million. "In total they've raised £5,000 which is amazing. "We really appreciate the effort those at The Glen put into making their fundraising a huge success. "I was delighted to meet Tom and hear about their support of our charity. "Thank you so much everyone. "Fundraisers, like these ones, will help us continue to be there for the people of Wales 24/7." The Wales Air Ambulance is consultant-led, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury. It is delivered via a unique third sector and public sector partnership. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the charity's vehicles. This advanced critical care includes the ability to administer anaesthesia, deliver blood transfusions and conduct minor operations, all at the scene of an incident.
