Connor Zilisch Slips Off Car While Celebrating in Watkins Glen Victory Lane, Rushed to Medical Center

Following a 45-minute red flag in the Mission 200 at The Glen Saturday evening, Connor Zilisch defended his first career victory, becoming a two-time winner at a track for the first time. The euphoria of this seventh career win, and fourth in the last five races, was quickly doused when Zilisch slipped while stepping up to the roof of his No. 88 JR Motorsports car from the window ledge of his driver's side window in Victory Lane. His left foot got caught in the window netting, and he went headfirst towards the ground. The CW Sports moved the camera away as medical professionals treated Zilisch and loaded him onto a backboard to be brought to the infield care center. The CW Sports reported that Zilisch was speaking with the medics, and NBC Sports' Dustin Long has reported that Zilisch sat up in the ambulance. Road Course 'Big One' Collects 16 Cars, Brings out Red Flag at The Glen

The NASCAR Xfinity Series race, Mission 200 at The Glen, was red-flagged Saturday evening with nine laps remaining following a collision between Austin Hill and Michael McDowell that sent McDowell's car careening across the narrow track through the carousel turn. With limited spotters and the drivers still bunched up following a recent restart, the crash collected 16 cars and caused substantial damage to the barriers. All drivers involved in the red-flag incident have been seen and released from the infield care center as NASCAR crews continue to work on fixing the barriers to complete the remainder of the race. McDowell took the biggest hit when Hill hit him on the left side, trying to pass for second. This came in Hill's first race back following a one-race suspension for turning Aric Almirola at Indianapolis. While watching the replay for the first time, McDowell commented that Hill 'just turned' him. "I felt like I got two good restarts there and was able to get back and take it clean," McDowell told The CW. "I didn't rough up the No. 21 at all, but it just kinda felt like he kept trying to move me there in the carousel. I can see here, [Hill] was never going to get alongside [me] there, I was on the way out, he wasn't even alongside, he just turned me." Hill, who holds firm that he did not intentionally wreck Almirola at Indy, spoke to The CW while under Red Flag conditions. "The No. 11 had struggled a little bit in front of me for a few laps through the carousel, across the middle, and the exit," Hill told The CW booth. "I thought that if I made it up front, I could get to his left side and have positioning to get to the left-hander. Obviously, I haven't seen the replay, I don't know if I didn't get far enough beside him." In hindsight, Hill thinks he should've pulled off and gotten back in line, realizing it was not a safe corner to make a left-handed pass. "I probably should've just lifted and got back in line, tried again in another corner. I hate it for everyone involved; that's definitely not what I wanted to happen, coming back from what we had going on." Hill went on to say that it was his fault that it happened. "As soon as I saw he was staying tight to the grass, I probably should've lifted. That was definitely on me, just driver error of going for it here, the No. 88 is driving away from us, it felt like that was one of those moves I needed to try to make a move as fast as possible on the NO. 11. It's just really unfortunate." You Might Also Like You Need a Torque Wrench in Your Toolbox Tested: Best Car Interior Cleaners The Man Who Signs Every Car

Ryan Blaney Takes Surprise Road Course Pole Position at Watkins Glen, 0.033 Seconds Faster than SVG

Ryan Blaney did not expect to start Sunday's Go Bowling 400 at The Glen stacked up next to road course titan Shane van Gisbergen, but a pole win on Saturday sets him up to do just so. Blaney went out in the second qualifying group and, after losing time to Shane van Gisbergen's provisional pole lap in the bus stop, improved over the rest of the lap for a time of 1:11,960, 0.033 seconds faster than the rookie from New Zealand. With Saturday's, Blaney delivers his 13th career pole, the last 11 for Team Penske, pushing Roger's team to 150 poles in the NASCAR Cup Series. Blaney has failed to convert any of his 13 pole positions into a win. His only other pole on a road course came at The Circuit of the Americas in 2022, where he would go on to finish fourth. "I'm a pretty average road racer, honestly," Blaney told NASCAR on TNT. "I work really hard to try and get better at it and find ways to be better. I'm really proud of the whole 12 group." Blaney's last visit to Watkins Glen ended early when a first-lap incident took him out of contention, and would go on to bring major changes to NASCAR's Damage Vehicle Policy. Bubba Wallace, who qualified 15th, came up to his competitor and close friend, Blaney, to rib him about putting himself on van Gisbergen's radar. "Well, that was a bad idea because now he's going to really wax you tomorrow," Blaney shared Bubba's words with him. "Hey, I've beaten him once this weekend," Blaney replied, "You have to start somewhere." Van Gisbergen will also start second in Saturday's Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen on the outside of Connor Zilisch, his JR Motorsports teammate, who will also be making his second career Cup Series Start from 25th. He qualified 14th in his debut at the Circuit of The Americas this year before being taken out in a crash with Trackhouse Racing's Daniel Suarez. Chase Briscoe qualified third, continuing his top-tier qualifying effort in 2025, which includes six poles. Ross Chastain, who earned pole here in 2024, will start fourth ahead of Kyle Busch, who had a surprisingly great qualifying effort on a road course in the middle of a subpar season that threatens to keep him out of the playoffs. Michael McDowell will start next to Busch on the third row.
