Their data reveals where your money goes furthest for a portion of fish and chips. Manchester tops the list as the most budget-friendly spot for a portion of fish and chips, averaging just £8.94. Walsall (£9.17) and Dundee (£9.47) round out the top three, coming in second and third place, respectively. Other affordable spots include Derby (£9.70), Bradford (£9.87) and Stoke-on-Trent (£9.88), all offering classic chippy fare for under a tenner. Scotland's second city, Glasgow, makes the list at number 10 with an average price of £10.37. Close behind Glasgow is Aberdeen (£10.67) and Edinburgh (£10.93). Harrison Score, Head of WDW Bingo, said: "Fish and chips are more than just a meal – they're a national institution. Whether you're paying under a tenner in Manchester or splashing out in Exeter, it's a dish enjoyed by generations across the UK. "At WDW Bingo, we know all about chasing the best odds – and when it comes to value for your fish supper, it pays to know where your chances are highest of bagging a low-cost meal. "The data shows that the North dominates the top 10 cheap eat locations for this iconic dish. It's also interesting that no seaside towns make the cut for cheaper chippies." The Golden Fry: A Beloved Scottish Chippy Hits the Market (1) It comes days after Scotland's best fish and chip shop was crowned in this year's annual takeaway awards. Coming out top in the chippy category was Sea Salt and Sole in Aberdeen. The takeaway, which has four locations in the city and surrounding area, commits to sourcing its haddock daily to provide customers with a fresh, delicious fish supper from sustainable suppliers.

However, people are only just discovering that the vinegar used at fish and chip shops isn't actually vinegar, and the revelation has left many minds blown. Instead, these shops use a cheaper alternative that legally cannot be called vinegar. This substitute is known as a 'non-brewed condiment' and is made from acetic acid, water, and colouring. And before you start thinking fish and chip shops are ripping you off, it's worth knowing that there are some practical benefits to using this alternative. The non-brewed condiment is halal, as it doesn't contain any alcohol since there's no malt involved in its production. It's also gluten-free, making it suitable for those with dietary restrictions. Additionally, it can often be purchased in concentrate form, which makes it easier to store and transport, reducing costs for shops. There are also strict rules in place to ensure customers aren't misled. Legally, the non-brewed condiment cannot be labelled as vinegar, nor can it be poured into bottles labelled as vinegar to avoid any deception.
