At ‘Die, My Love' Cannes Premiere, Person Dressed as Bird Flies in Face of Festival Red Carpet Rules

Thanksgiving came early at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. While hitting the red carpet for the premiere of the Lynne Ramsay-directed film Die, My Love, a person appeared in a bird suit, leaving the crowd very confused about the correlation. The bird posed for photos next to Raphaël Quenard. Another movie, Dangerous Animals, took place a couple of blocks away and about 15 minutes before Die, My Love's carpet began. And even though the film is about sharks, not turkeys, the film's title is fair to cause some confusion. The wild fashion choice came after the festival announced earlier this week that there is a ban this year for no nudity and 'voluminous' outfits. 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted,' read Cannes' official charter. 'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.' The horror-comedy Die, My Love earned a six-minute standing ovation at Cannes. It stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson and is an adaptation of the 2017 novel. Lawrence plays Grace, a new mother, suffering from postpartum depression and struggling to keep her sanity. Ramsay also wrote the script with Enda Walsh and Alice Birch. On the night before its world premiere, The Hollywood Reporter hosted a dinner in the French Rivera with its cast, filmmakers and collaborator. Richard Linklater's Cannes Competition Film ‘Nouvelle Vague' Gets New Teaser Trailer

A new teaser trailer for Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague (New Wave), which is premiering in the Cannes Film Festival competition on Saturday evening, shows off some of the cinematic style audiences can expect from the homage to Jean-Luc Godard's 1959 New Wave classic A Bout de Souffle (Breathless). The black-and-white movie, shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio, stars Guillaume Marbeck as Jean-Luc Godard, Zoey Deutch as Godard's star Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. Austin impresario Linklater shot his love letter to the French New Wave on location in Paris, explaining that his mission in making the film was 'to show the absolute love of cineastes.' The screenplay is from Vince Palmo, Michèle Halberstadt, Laetitia Masson, and Holly Gent, while David Chambille was in charge of cinematography. Goodfellas is handling international sales on the project. Crime drama Breathless, written and directed by Godard, features Belmondo as a young criminal and Seberg as his American girlfriend. Abel Tesfaye Is 'Brainstorming' His Next Move With ‘The Weeknd' Stage Name: 'We Don't Have Any Definite Answers'

After past performances in Uncut Gems and The Idol, Abel Tesfaye is continuing to solidify himself as an actor, and on Tuesday night debuted his starring role in Hurry Up Tomorrow. Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd, plays a fictionalized version of himself in the Lionsgate project, as a musician on the verge of a mental breakdown who is pulled into an existential odyssey by a mysterious stranger. The film is a companion piece to his album of the same name, which was released in January. When it comes to the future of his acting journey, the musician noted, 'It's all art to me, so if it connects with me and I feel inspired to make it, then I'm gonna make it.' The film also comes at a time when Tesfaye has spoken about retiring his stage name and has previously signaled that Hurry Up Tomorrow would likely be the final chapter of The Weeknd. But when asked about that decision on the carpet, he said, 'We're brainstorming it right now. I feel like we don't have any definite answers, but I haven't dropped it yet because I'm on tour, so I've still gotta get out there and see the fans.' Ortega — wearing the iconic Christian Dior newspaper dress that Carrie Bradshaw wore in Sex and the City — explained that the 'whole point of the film is it's supposed to be very enigmatic' and highlighted the value of her 'support system' in Tesfaye, Keoghan and Shults. 'It's challenging to insert yourself into such a personal story for somebody else and allow them to be vulnerable and create a safe space to do that but then also share your own experiences,' she acknowledged. The star also spoke about her desire to direct, after recently revealing she wants to direct a script she's been working on for 10 years. When asked if fans can expect her in the director's chair soon, Ortega responded, 'I don't know, there's also a lot of pressure on it, but I really would. I think I would rather wait for the right time and when I feel ready — and I'll know when that happens but when I do it, I want to be able to give all my time and effort in it. I'm working on projects I'm really excited about right now so maybe, everything needs its due time.' Hurry Up Tomorrow hits theaters on Friday. Neha Joy contributed to this report. Films Addressing Oct. 7 Aftermath Win Berlin Jewish Film Festival

Two films that engage directly with the experiences of the October 7 attacks and their aftermath took top honors at the 2025 Jewish Film Festival Berlin Brandenburg (JFBB), Germany's largest Jewish film festival. Of Dogs and Men, a docudrama from Israeli director Dani Rosenberg, shot at the Nir Oz kibbutz just weeks after the attacks, won the Gershon Klein Feature Film Award, the JFFB's top prize, with the jury praising the movie's 'courageous gesture' of choosing to film in a war zone and its artful blending of fiction and documentary storytelling. The jury also highlighted Ori Avinoam's lead performance as a teenage girl who, after narrowly escaping the attack, returns to the kibbutz to search for her lost dog. The jury described the film as 'a story of parenthood, perseverance, and politics,' underscoring its focus on private grief amid public crisis. A Special Mention in the documentary category was given to The Belle from Gaza, directed by Yolande Zauberman. Zvi Landsman received the Intercultural Dialogue Award for Jacob De Haan: A Voice Out of Time, a portrait of the late Dutch Jewish writer, journalist and noted anti-Zionist who was persecuted in his lifetime for his homosexuality and finally assassinated by a Zionist paramilitary organization. The jury lauded the film for its 'quiet power and lyrical depth' in exploring identity, belief, and historical memory. The Newcomer Award was presented earlier in the week to Israeli director Tom Nesher for her debut feature Come Closer, a portrait of two women navigating grief and hidden desire. The 31st JFFB, held for the first time in May, was a resounding public success, with sold-out screenings and packed houses for the week-long festival. 'We've received a lot of positive feedback for our diverse program selection, the atmosphere in the cinemas was excellent, and the conversations between filmmakers presenting their work at the JFBB and the audience were extremely engaging,' said JFBB managing director Andreas Stein. 'The festival is steadily evolving into a place of exchange for everyone interested in Jewish life in Germany and around the world.'
