India's Asia Cup squad announcement LIVE UPDATES: Surya & Agarkar to reveal squad after 1:30 PM IST

LIVE | India squad announcement for Asia Cup 2025: The bigger question is whether Gill will find a place in the squad, given that India are scheduled to play Test series against West Indies The senior selection committee, chaired by former cricketer Ajit Agarkar, will announce India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025 today. Suryakumar Yadav is expected to be retained as India's T20I captain after being declared fit a few days ago. The bigger question, however, is whether Shubman Gill will find a place in the squad, given that India are scheduled to play a two-Test series just four days after the continental tournament ends. Former India batter Aakash Chopra has said that the selection for Asia Cup 2025 could be among the most challenging in recent years, given the sheer depth of talent in Indian cricket. 'The talent pool is so vast that even someone like Shubman Gill, who is leading the Test side and has broken several records, cannot be assured of a place in another format. This will be a tough call for the selectors. After all, India has won 17 of its last 20 T20 matches,' Chopra told ANI. On being asked about pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, Chopra was full of praise. 'He is a once-in-a-generation cricketer, one of the finest the world has witnessed. If he is fit and available for the Asia Cup, and can feature in the key matches, he must be part of the squad,' he said. The former opener, now a commentator and analyst, also spoke about The Great Indian Cricket Show. 'I have played the game and I follow it religiously, but even I am surprised at times when I hear stories from someone like Anil Kumble. I've shared both the dressing room and the commentary box with him, yet there are things I didn't know happened. The aim is to tell such stories—ones that inspired a generation—while going deeper into the narrative,' Chopra explained. He added that the show would attempt to cover all dimensions of the game. 'The idea is to bring in every aspect—whether it's anecdotes, personal journeys, event-specific accounts, or even controversies. Indian cricket has seen its share of turbulence, but the intent is to explore everything that falls under its umbrella,' Chopra noted. 9:05 AM LIVE | India squad announcemnt for Asia Cup 2025: The Shubman Gill Puzzle! How do you squeeze a brilliant batter like Shubman Gill into India's finely-tuned T20 machine? That's the burning question before Ajit Agarkar and his fellow selectors as they meet today to finalise the 15 for next month's Asia Cup in the UAE. Gill, fresh off a dream run as Test captain in England, hasn't quite found a natural slot in the T20 set-up gearing up for the September 9–28 continental showdown. The dilemma for the selectors: should they tinker with a winning formula? It's a tricky—and perhaps 'scary'—call. After all, Indian cricket today is a T20 production line with around 30 players ready to step in, and multiple contenders fighting for every single spot. 9:00 AM LIVE | India squad announcemnt for Asia Cup Hello and welcome to our live coverage of India squad announcement for the Asia Cup 2025. With at least 30 players in contention for 15 spots in the squad for the continental tournament, the selectors, Captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir have a chance to pick best possible team list.

Doordarshan launches new weekly cricket show

Prasar Bharati, India's public service broadcaster, launched a new weekly cricket programme in collaboration with CricViz, titled 'The Great Indian Cricket Show', in the national capital on Monday. The show, which will be telecast on Doordarshan's sports channel (DD Sports) every Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m., aims to celebrate India's cricketing heritage with the help of enlightening data and effective storytelling. Former India cricketers Anil Kumble, Sanjay Manjrekar, Sanjay Bangar and Parthiv Patel will appear as guests on the show, and share insights and anecdotes on some of India's best cricketing moments. Attending the launch event here on Monday were ex-cricketers Madan Lal, Chetan Sharma, Murali Kartik and Aakash Chopra. Navneet Kumar Sehgal (Chairman of Prasar Bharati), Gaurav Dwivedi (Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharathi) and Michael Kivido (Managing Director of CricViz) were present for the launch. 'What the show promises to bring out is lots of stories with the help of stats. Cold numbers alone tell you nothing. With CricViz providing stats and a lot of information, good storytelling can possibly help present a different picture,' Kartik, a left-arm spinner who played for India from 2000 to 2007, said.

Ex-IND Spinner 'Lucky' To Play With Sachin, Sourav, Dravid & VVS But Names WI Legend As 'Inspiration'

Last Updated: Murali Kartik credits his cricket inspiration to West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers but feels blessed to have mentors like Bedi and Singh and to play with Tendulkar and Dravid. Former India spinner Murali Kartik has shared insights into his cricketing journey, attributing his inspiration to West Indies cricket and the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers. 'Look, I've had the good fortune of taking up the sport because of West Indies cricket, to be very honest. For me, Sir Garfield (Sobers) was a great inspiration. I don't know if many people know about that, but I took up the sport because of West Indies cricket, and Sir Garfield Sobers was the inspiration," Kartik was quoted as saying to ANI. What Murali Kartik Said About Indian Cricketers? The left-arm spinner, who later represented India, expressed his gratitude for having Bishan Singh Bedi and Maninder Singh as mentors. 'As and when I became a left-arm spinner, I was lucky enough that I had the great Bishan Bedi and Maninder Singh as my mentor and guru. So for me, it's just been an absolutely brilliant journey," he added. Reflecting on his career, which spanned over two decades, Kartik considered himself blessed to play alongside some of India's finest cricketers. 'God was kind enough, I ended up playing the sport for twenty-six long years at various levels. I was also very lucky that I played possibly in one of the best generations with the likes of Sachin (Tendulkar), (Virender) Sehwag, Rahul (Dravid), (VVS) Laxman, Sourav (Ganguly), Zaheer (Khan), Ajit (Agarkar), (Javagal) Srinath, (Anil) Kumble, Harbhajan (Singh), the three of us as spinners, so, I can't ask for more, (Mohammed) Azharuddin was my captain at one stage. So it's just been a really nice journey," he said. On 'The Great Indian Cricket Show', Kartik also discussed storytelling in cricket, emphasising that behind every performance lies a tale of sacrifice and inspiration. 'Every story has a backstory, and the cricketers we watch or are inspired by. They've all had a story, even the other ones who aren't talked about. I think all of them have a story," he said. He added, 'With the help of explanations regarding statistics and all the technology, I think it should be a wonderful view because, at the end of the day, that is what inspires us. We all love a good story, and I always say this in sports: there is a lot of blood, sweat, and sacrifice involved, which any sports person has made, whether it's cricket or otherwise. So you have that story, and what has happened or transpired from it. I think that making a difference is what I feel." "Even If You Are Test Captain...": Ex-India Star's Big Verdict On Shubman Gill

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 selection will be one of the toughest in recent times, given the depth of talent at the Indian cricket circuit. "The depth of talent is so immense that even if you are a Test captain (Shubman Gill) and have shattered a lot of records, you are not a certainty in a different format. This is going to be a tough selection. We have won 17 out of the last 20 T20 matches we played," Chopra told ANI. When asked about pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, Chopra praised him. "He is a generational talent and one of the best that the world has ever seen. If he is available for the Asia Cup and he plays the games that matter, he should be there," Chopra noted. The former opener, who has transitioned into commentary and analysis, also reflected on 'The Great Indian Cricket Show'. "I have played this sport a little bit, I claim to follow the sport religiously, even for me it is a bit of an eye-opener from time to time when you hear it from someone like Anil Kumble's mouth. I have shared the dressing room with him, the commentary box with him now, there are certain stories, and you say 'oh wow, this also happened, and I was there and I did not know.' So, the attempt is to go in that direction, talk about stories that have inspired a generation, but now go a little deeper, delve a little deeper," Chopra said. He added, "That is the idea which should cover all aspects, all spheres, whether it's the anecdotal part, whether that's the individual part, whether that's the event-specific part, whether we go into controversies. Indian cricket may have gone into turbulent times, but the attempt is to cover everything that is under the sun as far as Indian cricket is concerned."
