Cannes Festival bans actor accused of rape

CANNES: The Cannes film festival said it had barred an actor in a prominent French film from the red carpet on Thursday because of sexual assault allegations against him. Theo Navarro-Mussy has a secondary role as a police officer in the film 'Dossier 137' by Dominik Moll which is to premiere on Thursday in the festival's main competition. According to French magazine Telerama, which broke the news, the actor was accused of rape by three former partners in 2018, 2019, and 2020, but the case was dropped last month for lack of evidence. The three women plan to appeal and file a civil lawsuit, Telerama said. Cannes Festival director Thierry Fremaux confimed to Telerama that Navarro-Mussy had been excluded because an appeal was underway. Navarro-Mussy's lawyer denied this. 'The procedure is still ongoing,' Fremaux was quoted as saying. The festival confirmed the decision and Fremaux's remarks when contacted by AFP. A French parliamentary inquiry into the entertainment industry published its findings last month, with MPs concluding that abuse of performers was 'endemic'. Inquiry chair Sandrine Rousseau, an outspoken feminist lawmaker from The Greens party, called on Cannes Festival to set an example in stamping out sexual abuse, as well as physical and psychological violence.

Greens MP quits over party 'scheming and sabotage'

One state's Greens co-leader has quit the party, saying she could no longer tolerate "scheming", mercenary tactics and sabotage bids against her. South Australian co-leader Tammy Franks - a Greens MP for 15 years - said she would sit on the crossbench from Tuesday as a "progressive independent" until the 2026 state election. "I still believe in a Greens' vision for a better world and know there are many, many wonderful, committed and well intentioned people within the party," she said. "But not all have such noble motivations and they and their scheming are being too often enabled." I declared my decision to resign from The Greens (SA) to the SA Greens Party room this morning. I now join the #saparli upper house cross-bench as a progressive independent. — Tammy Franks MLC (@TammyMLC) May 13, 2025 Ms Franks had announced in 2024 she would retire at the next election, but on Tuesday she said she "wouldn't rule anything out". "I cannot properly do the job I was elected to do until March 2026 … when trust has been broken, and I spend more time watching my back than thinking ahead," she said. "A small coterie colluded against me hoping to sabotage my work, to wear me down and dissuade me from continuing." She said she had been accused of misconduct by this group and "gaslit and subjected to a kangaroo court, all masterminded by a staffer I am now meant to work with". "The Greens' processes should recognise the often mercenary tactics used by those who seek control, power and promotion," she said. She said the "ringleader" was employed in the office of the Greens' other upper house MP, Robert Simms, "and I do not feel safe in the situation where we are meant to work together". In a statement, Mr Simms did not address Ms Franks' allegations but said he was "deeply saddened" by her decision. "Tammy has been rightly lauded for her work on a range of important portfolio areas and been a strong voice for the Greens over the last 15 years," he said. "We have worked very closely together during this time. "I know many members will share my sadness at this outcome, but our movement is bigger than any one person or individual."

BREAKING NEWS Penny Wong's brutal message for struggling Greens leader Adam Bandt

Penny Wong has compared Adam Bandt to Peter Dutton as his political career threatens to go up in smoke. Mr Bandt is still very much in danger of losing his Melbourne seat, with a huge five per cent swing to Labor's Sarah Witty saw Bandt's primary vote drop to 41 per cent. Ms Wong weighed in on Bandt's and The Greens struggles on in an interview with Karl Stefanovic, arguing that the party's 'culture war' messaging did not resonate with voters. 'Unfortunately, Adam Bandt, you know, in some ways is quite like Peter Dutton,' she said. 'It's the same conflict. It's the same. Frankly, sometimes quite aggressive and the same politics of protest and grievance. 'I think Australians have comprehensively rejected that.' Much of the Greens' election campaign messaging focused on the Israel-Hamas conflict, taxing billionaires and climate change. 'My suggestion to Adam Bandt is perhaps he should consider what the message (that) Australians sent to all of us in parliament,' she said. But Mr Stefanovic then challenged Wong, highlighing that she had addressed a 'culture wars' issue herself - by declaring the Voice to Parliament an inevitability in Australia just days before the election. 'Look, you mentioned The Voice during the campaign as well, Penny. I listened to it and you clearly weren't saying you were going to go back to it, but it was seized upon, as you know. Wong dodged the question, and doubled-down on the country's rejection of the 'culture wars' 'People were concerned about Medicare. People were concerned about cost of living. People were concerned about tax cuts. People were concerned about schools and hospitals and bulk billing and fee free TAFE,' she said. 'That's what Australians wanted to see.
