Edinburgh Hive nightclub looks to create new image as 'reputable music venue'

More info A mainstay Edinburgh nightclub is seeking to establish itself as a "reputable music venue" in an effort to foster the capital's struggling music scene. Staff at the Hive Nightclub & Venue in Edinburgh's Cowgate area issued a callout to local artists to perform at the venue, seeking "local bands and artist to play live gigs at The Hive." The Hive is known as a clubbing destination, but the team is working to rebrand, with an announcement from the nightclub reading: "Whether you're indie, rock, punk, metal, alt, or something totally unique, we want to hear from you." Edinburgh Live spoke to Eric Brock, 34, who hopes to provide a new space at The Hive for up and coming artists in Edinburgh to make a name for themselves. Eric has been a part of the capital's music scene since 2016 with his band Earl of Hell and claims the scene has been in a state of "steady decline" for years. He said: "Being in a band from Edinburgh, I know how difficult it is for up and coming bands to get on a show. It's different for Glasgow [but for] Scotland as a whole, it's tough. We played the majority of our shows down south because there are more places to play, more venues, bigger crowds." As the city loses venues like Studio 24, he sees it as more important than ever to welcome fresh acts to the stage. Eric added: "After Covid, it took a big hit. All the cities in Scotland need to have more music venues and also think about getting people back out to gigs. It's a difficult market." "We're trying to bring live music into the Hive as well as it being a club. Hive is a mainstay club in Edinburgh and has been there for years. It's one of the most popular clubs in Edinburgh, but most people don't know it has music. "We're trying to create an identity as a reputable music venue. It's something that Edinburgh lacks. "We don't want to pigeonhole ourselves for certain genre, any genre is welcome. It is a really solid space for music. It's just about trying to get it out there." Faune Reid, events manager at The Hive, said: "We've always been passionate about supporting grassroots music and local talent. Our call-out for live acts is a chance to give emerging artists a platform in one of Edinburgh's most iconic venues." Gamuda Land's unit GL PLay to bring new attractions to Gamuda Cove

KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Land's leisure and hospitality arm GL Play will introduce new attractions across the Gamuda Cove township in Selangor. GL Play on Tuesday signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with Enfiniti Escapes (M) Sdn Bhd, One Universal Production Sdn Bhd, Wonderful Wildlife & Recreation Management Sdn Bhd and Seven Evernew PLT for the new attractions. The partnerships will bring a new wildlife experience, two eco-resorts and an indoor children's play centre to locations such as the 1,111-acre Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands, the 90-acre Wetlands Arboretum and The Hive at Gamuda Cove. "These additions are not just exciting on their own; they form part of a larger story we're telling at Gamuda Cove - a story about living well, with nature at your doorstep," said Gamuda Land chief executive officer Chu Wai Lune. "They will complement our existing attractions like SplashMania and Discovery Park, offering something for every visitor, from thrill-seekers to nature lovers, and families with young children." Wonderful Wildlife will collaborate with GL Play to develop a zoo focusing on conservation, education and animal welfare, featuring nearly 90 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. The zoo will also build on GL Play's popular Jungle School Programme with immersive learning experiences such as guided ranger tours, feeding sessions, and wildlife shows. These efforts will be guided by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks to ensure biodiversity and ethical care remain top priorities. Enfiniti Escapes will introduce Tiarasa Lakeside, a luxury eco-resort following its award-winning glamping concept at Janda Baik, while One Universal will transform existing chalets into luxury pool villas under its Hadi Premium Collection. "Following the success of Tiarasa Escapes in Janda Baik, Malaysia's original luxury glamping resort, Tiarasa Lakeside now becomes the next chapter in our journey," said Enfiniti Group chief dream maker Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina. Meanwhile, Seven Evernew will open TiniTin Town, a 9,000 sq ft indoor themed playground for children under 10, at The Hive.

Building blocks for a finer future

For 97 years, Madras Seva Sadan has been an institute for inclusivity, learning, and empowerment. Now, as it gets closer to its 100th year of establishment in 2028, the organisation is adding new strands to its illustrious history by starting initiatives that combine education, skill improvement, and sports excellence. A graphic representation of this expansion was presented to stakeholders, team members and audience at Synergy, held at Prem Vihar, on Friday. 'The purpose for this gathering is to look for a more structured approach to funding so that we have our projects which can be easily executed by having a structured form of raising money through CSR, charity, and donations,' shared Sunil Shanker, treasurer of Madras Seva Sadan. At the heart of this evolution are three new projects, each echoing the original spirit of the founders, yet tuned to today's needs. First, the Lady Andal House of Children, an open school. 'We have pioneered in mainstreaming children with special needs into everyday school life. And based on our experience and research, we realised that we need to do a little bit more, which is why the idea of an open school came about. With this, our aim is to provide for all the needs under one roof. Here, we provide the students with tailor-made lesson plans, inclusive education with therapy and flexibility for children with disabilities,' said Krithika Kumar Quintal, honorary general secretary of the Sadan. While the students are given education and accommodation until class 12, they and their parents worry about what next? To answer their woes, the second project is the Madras Seva Sadan Centre for Community Empowerment, a vocational skill-building initiative designed to prepare students for the future workplace, offering safe, accessible, and sensory-friendly training. 'Education alone isn't enough today. The final destination is employability. Vocational skills open a practical path forward,' explained Anjali Kumar, operations head, highlighting how the centre will serve as a hall to independent living. Third on the agenda is the Madras Seva Sadan multidisciplinary centre for sports excellence — The Hive, envisioned as a world-class facility at one of its campuses in T Nagar. With facilities for swimming, shooting, squash, badminton, table tennis, pickleball, and cricket nets alongside yoga spaces and community hubs, The Hive aims to nurture athletic talent across all sections of society. 'It is proven that sports is a vehicle to bring about change in society, to build nations, and to bring across multiple sections of society together,' noted Raman, a sports mentor, adding, 'While it is a project coming from the heart, there is enough business and financial sense which has gone into it, enough experience and diligence to make sure that this is a project that at the end of three to four years will start surviving on its own.' The facility will bring in professional athletes, provide space for schools in the city to practice and Sadan's children to up their game. He said, 'This is one of the safest, plus impactful contributions somebody can make if they want to participate in society building, which is sports infrastructure.' The team is looking for external participation through the event for two reasons: funding availability and an outsider perspective. 'So when somebody comes in, they bring in money but also ideas,' said Sunil. With new concepts taking root and a century-old dedication to service as the cornerstone, Madras Seva Sadan is reimagining its future: one in which education serves as the ultimate goal, one in which abilities equate to power; and one in which athletics may inspire change.
