(Image: Netflix © 2024 / Giles Keyte ) Popular crime novel The Thursday Murder Club, penned by TV presenter and writer Richard Osman, is finally being adapted in to a film and the release date has just been confirmed. Osman's murder mystery set around a retirement home in a fictitious village in Kent is coming to Netflix later this year, and fans are very excited. The streaming giant has confirmed that the star-studded movie will premiere exclusively on its platform on August 28 2025, which quite fittingly happens to be a Thursday. ‌ In addition to the release date, fans have been treated to some fresh first-look images, offering a glimpse at some of the big names starring in the film. Article continues below The film has been directed by Chris Columbus, who is no stranger to a high profile movie having directed films like Home Alone and several of the Harry Potter franchise. It centres around four spirited retirees who spend their days solving cold case murders for amusement, and wait until you find out who's playing them.... The cast is absolutely full of stars including Sir Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim Arif, Pierce Brosnan as Ron Ritchie, Helen Mirren as Elizabeth Best and Celia Imrie as Joyce Meadowcroft. The official synopsis hints: "When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands." The film is based on the first book in Osman's highly popular series, which currently comprises four novels, with a fifth set to be released this coming September called The Impossible Fortune. ‌ Sir Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim Arif, Pierce Brosnan as Ron Ritchie and Helen Mirren as Elizabeth Best Columbus previously shared that the film would adhere to the storyline of the first Thursday Murder Club novel, although he conceded that "certain events and plot devices have been changed". He added that "other scenes were omitted for time," but reassured fans that "the essence of the book's sharp, witty humour and the emotional complexity of each character has been preserved. Richard Osman has shared exciting news for The Thursday Murder Club fans – a brand new book in the series is coming! The author revealed that the fifth story in the series will be called The Impossible Fortune and is out on September 25, marking the first entry since 2023's The Last Devil to Die. "The gang are going to be back this autumn in a brand-new book in the series, and there's lots to catch up on," Osman said in a note to fans. Pre-order: The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman After unveiling the title, he teased that that the novel is "going to be a fun one" that will feature "a wedding, an uncrackable code, and a fortune more unusual than you can imagine" – and of course, murders. The writer also promised "more news soon" with something "exclusive" coming for fans in the weeks ahead. Osman spoke a bit more about the book on his The Rest is Entertainment podcast with Marina Hyde, confirming today: "I finished writing it yesterday – I wrote 'the end' yesterday. It's so satisfying." Teasing the plot, he said much of the theme focuses on "luck and chance and what life throws at you", before revealing that he nearly called it something else. Related: Best streaming services "The inspiration all the way through, I wanted to call it Fortune's Always Hiding, which is from 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles', the West Ham song… because Ron in the book is a West Ham fan," he explained. "So I said to the publishers and agents and everyone, 'This is the name I want because of the song.' And every single one of them said, 'What song?' I said, 'What do you mean what song?' Nobody knew those lyrics… "I wanted to call it that and no-one understood it, and I was thinking Impossible Heist, and I put the two together and got Impossible Fortune, which does everything it needs to do for me." Alongside the new book entry, The Thursday Murder Club is gearing up for a movie adaptation on Netflix starring Helen Mirren, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley, which is due for release later in the year.
