The Central government will set up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam, with the introduction of The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on Monday in the Lok Sabha. The Bill was introduced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. According to the draft law, the Centre, State government of Assam and representatives of the United Liberation Front of Assam have signed a Memorandum of Settlement for the 'all-round development of Assam'. A number of developmental projects will be implemented by the Centre under a Special Development Package, including the establishment of an IIM in Guwahati. The Assam government had sought the establishment of an IIM keeping in view the State's geographical location. 'Assam is one of the very few States with more than three crore population which does not have an IIM. As per latest published results of All-India Survey of Higher Education, more than five and half lakh students are enrolled in higher education institutions in Assam,' the Bill said. 'Establishing an IIM at Assam shall boost the overall education and development of the region and open up significant opportunities for the students of North Eastern region of India to develop managerial skills,' it added. IIM-Guwahati will get a corpus fund of ₹555 crore for five years (2025-26 to 2029-30). 'After five years, no additional support shall be extended to the Institute since by end of such period, the IIM-Guwahati shall be generating enough revenue through own internal accruals,' the Bill said. The Bill stated that until the first board of IIM, Guwahati is constituted under the Act, all powers and functions 'shall be exercised and performed by such person or persons as the Central Government may direct in this behalf'. IIM-Guwahati will be the 22nd such institute.
