Jack O'Connor strongly indicates he will step down from Kerry management

ALL IRELAND WINNING manager, Jack O'Connor, has given a strong indication in his post-match press conference that he will step down as Kerry manager. After securing his fifth All-Ireland as manager, the Dromid Pearses man was questioned as to his future in the role. Advertisement He told a story, 'Well, all I know is I was going out the door Thursday evening with the with the bag and my missus took a picture of me going out the gate. And I already know that'll be up on the wall. That was my last, so I'd say no, she'll be framing that one.' Questioned further if this was him signing off on his third spell in charge of The Kingdom, he hinted that he wanted to have a word with his players before anything was confirmed. O'Connor's agreed term was due to expire after this season anyway. 'Look I think I'm on record, early in the year there, that that it would probably be my last time,' he said. 'I said, you know, so, look…the lads, before I tell anyone else there's a lot more important people down the corridor. Look, we'll do that in due course. There's no hurry.' * Check out the latest episode of The42′s GAA Weekly podcast here

Jack O'Connor paid the ultimate compliment by Jarlath Burns with Micko comment

GAA President Jarlath Burns paid Jack O'Connor the ultimate compliment today as he claimed that the Kerry manager deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as iconic Kingdom bainisteoir Mick O'Dwyer. With his win today, O'Connor tasted victory for the fifth time as a manager with Kerry, 21-years on from lifting the Sam Maguire trophy for the first time as head coach. Today's win moves O'Connor to within three of the legendary 'Micko,' who won a staggering eight Celtic Crosses as manager of The Kingdom throughout his career. President of the GAA Jarlath Burns before the game (Image: Mandatory Credit ©INPHO/Laszlo Geczo) Micko is arguably the most revered manager in GAA history let alone Kerry, and his work at counties like Kildare and Laois cemented his legacy across the island. He passed away in April of this year at the age of 88. Once upon a time, comparisons to Micko would have been outlandish, but on the steps of the Hogan Stand this evening, Burns suggested that it is now time for 'Micko' and 'Jacko' to be mentioned in the same conversation in the Kingdom. What happens if the GAA All-Ireland football final is a draw? Is there extra-time and a replay this year?

KERRY are taking on Donegal in a huge GAA All-Ireland football final at Croke Park in Dublin. The match will see The Kingdom look to win a their 39th title against Donegal. 1 However, Donegal are looking to upset the odds, and win a third title in their history. Kerry beat Donegal in the 2014 final, but have not won the final since 2022, despite playing against Dublin in 2023. What happens if the All-Ireland football final is a draw? Should the All-Ireland final finish as a draw then 20 minutes of extra-time will be played, at 10 minutes a half. Then if the match is still drawn the final will go to a replay. The replay is scheduled for two weeks after the final on Saturday, August 9.

McHugh eager to make his own history for Donegal

Ryan McHugh says emulating his successful family members is not a primary motivation for this weekend's All-Ireland football final against Kerry. McHugh's dad, Martin, and uncle, James, were key figures in Donegal's maiden All-Ireland win in 1992, while older brother Mark played when Sam Maguire returned to the hills in 2012. Ryan joined Mark on the team that reached the 2014 final against Kerry but fell short and, although his older brother has progressed on to coaching, the younger of the Kilcar brothers is still a mainstay in the green and gold. Although he would dearly love to get his own Celtic Cross this weekend, his desire to succeed is fuelled by a motivation to reach the top and banish the memories of the disappointing days since. "I haven't got one yet, but it's nothing I think of," the 31-year-old told BBC Sport NI. "Mark and dad had phenomenal careers for Donegal. Would I love an All-Ireland medal? Of course I would. It's over to me now to do that, but it's not something I think of that I have to get one because they did. "I'm blessed to have been born at a time where Donegal have been in All-Ireland finals. As a supporter in 2012 and with Mark playing, it was unbelievable for the family. "Then in '14 with myself involved, it was massive for the family and for Donegal. It was disappointing in '14, but hopefully we can put that right this time." McHugh was just 20 when he lined out against The Kingdom in that 2014 defeat and with it being Donegal's second final in three years, he could have been forgiven they would be there or thereabouts in the years to come. Sport doesn't work out that way and although there were Ulster title wins in 2018 and 2019, they just couldn't make the big breakthrough. The return of Jim McGuinness as manager last year and Michael Murphy's decision to reverse his retirement have injected fresh impetus in Donegal football and with the county riding high again, McHugh is hopeful they can take the final step on Sunday. "As a kid, you think you're going to maybe not make a final, but semi-finals and quarter-finals every couple of years," he said. "It didn't work out that way for different reasons, but since Jim's back involved, we've been competing again, got to a semi-final last year and thankfully gone one better this year. It will mean nothing if we don't get over the line. "There's no guarantee in life you're going to win anything, but when Jim's involved, there's a good chance you're going to compete for the top prizes."
