Rocker Rages Against Trump for Attacking Bruce Springsteen
Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello used his Boston Calling Music Festival set to slam Donald Trump amid the president's ongoing beef with Bruce Springsteen, telling the crowd 'F--- that guy,' as he performed in front of a 'F--- Trump' backdrop, reports The hyper-political guitarist told the crowd Monday that Trump was only 'mad' at Springsteen because the rock icon 'draws a bigger audience.' Springsteen and Trump have been in a back-and-forth that began when the rocker called out the president for 'persecuting people for their right to free speech and voicing their dissent' and 'taking sadistic pleasure in the pain they inflict on loyal American workers,' among other things. Trump responded with several long-winded rants of his own, calling Springsteen a 'dried up prune' and threatening a 'major' investigation into whether Springsteen, Beyoncé, and others were paid to make appearances at Kamala Harris' fundraisers. He later posted a doctored video of himself hitting Springsteen with a golf ball. Springsteen hasn't backed down from the fight, continuing to rant against Trump during his 'The Land of Hopes and Dreams' tour and then releasing an EP with his most scathing anti-Trump remarks, cementing his disdain for the president into music history. Morello backed his fellow rocker in the ongoing beef on Monday. 'Bruce is going after Trump because Bruce, his whole life, he's been about truth, justice, democracy, equality,' he said during his Boston Calling set, before adding, 'F--- that guy,' per To make it more clear, Morello debuted a backdrop adorned with 'F--- Trump' paraphernalia as he began his 2021 track, 'Let's Get the Party Started.' He later displayed a 'F--- I.C.E.' sticker on the back of his guitar. Morello also used part of his hour-long set to shout out Harvard University, his alma mater, in its legal battle with the president, as he praised the institution for offering a free course on 'basic U.S. government, understanding the Constitution, and how to recognize a dictatorship takeover of your country.' Morello's sharp rebukes of Trump come after Neil Young jumped into the fray to defend Springsteen, telling Trump, 'STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT ROCKERS ARE SAYING. Think about saving America from the mess you made.' He added, 'I am not scared of you. Neither are the rest of us.'

Music stars, including Neil Young and Eddie Vedder, have voiced their support for Bruce Springsteen amid his clash with President Donald Trump. Why It Matters On the opening night of his Land of Hope and Dreams Tour, Springsteen decried the Trump administration, labeling it "corrupt, incompetent and treasonous." Bruce Springsteen performs during the first night of his 'The Land of Hopes and Dreams' tour at Co-op Live on May 14, 2025, in Manchester, England. Bruce Springsteen performs during the first night of his 'The Land of Hopes and Dreams' tour at Co-op Live on May 14, 2025, in Manchester, response, the president called Springsteen "a pushy, obnoxious JERK" and a "dried-out 'prune' of a rocker" on his social media platform, Truth Social. Springsteen spoke out again after this, saying that events in America are "altering the very nature of our country's democracy" and that elected officials have "utterly failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government." What To Know In a new blog post on the Neil Young Archives website, Young wrote, "Bruce and thousands of musicians think you are ruining America. He continued, "Taylor Swift is right. So is Bruce. You know how I feel. You are more worried about yourself than AMERICA. Wake up Trump!! Remember what the White House is?" Swift and Springsteen have both been publicly mentioned by the president in recent days. On May 16, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Has anyone noticed that, since I said, 'I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,' she's no longer 'HOT?'" Swift has not responded to this. She endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election and has been critical of Trump in the past. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder has also spoken out in support of Springsteen. "Part of free speech is open discussion, part of democracy is healthy public discourse. The name calling is so beneath us. Bruce has always been a true American with his values of freedom and liberty and his justice has always remained in tact," he said. The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) has also endorsed Springsteen and Swift. They said they would "not remain silent" as two of their members were "attacked." They wrote that Swift and Springsteen are "role models" and "inspirations" to millions. Some other musicians have also spoken out against Trump and the current administration. In February, Jack White played the final date of his North American 'No Name' tour in Boston, where he played a version of the song "Corporation," which took aim at Trump and his close ally, Elon Musk. White sang, "I'm thinking about not being elected. Never holding a public office. Never serving one day of military service, But somehow having the authority to control parts of the US Government; Who's with me?" and "I'm thinking about not being properly vetted by the Supreme Court or Congress, Just doing whatever the hell I want because some f****** bloated a****** orange f****** gorilla whose failed at every business he's ever ran wants me to be his golf cart partner." The band Green Day has also addressed Trump. During their headline set at Coachella, they changed the lyric in "American Idiot" to "I'm not a part of a MAGA agenda," and did the same for their song "Jesus of Suburbia" where they sang, "Am I r******* or am I just J.D. Vance?" Meanwhile, 250 celebrities from multiple industries recently signed a full-page ad for Planned Parenthood in The New York Times. The ad reads "I'm for Planned Parenthood... Because I'm for freedom... because I'm for healthcare... because I'm for you and me — not the government — deciding what care we need and where we can get it." The ad has been signed by musical stars, including Harry Styles, Olivia Rodrigo, and Addison Rae. It comes after the Trump administration has intensified efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. What People Are Saying The American Federation of Musicians, in a statement shared on social media: "Whether it's Born in the USA of the Eras Tour, their music is timeless, impactful and has deep cultural meaning. Musicians have the right to freedom of expression, and we stand in solidarity with all our members." Neil Young, in a post on the Neil Young Archives: "You are more worried about yourself than AMERICA. Wake up Trump!! Remember what the White House is?" Bruce Springsteen, speaking at his concert: "In my country, they're taking sadistic pleasure in the pain they inflict on loyal American workers. They're rolling back historic civil rights legislation that has led to a more just and plural society. They are abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom. They are defunding American universities that won't bow down to their ideological demands." What's Next A number of American artists, including Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo, will perform at the Glastonbury Festival in June, where they may well address American politics.

About an hour later, Trump called out 'Highly Overrated' and 'dumb as a rock' Springsteen for going 'to a Foreign Country to speak badly about the President of the United States.' Advertisement 'Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he's not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who fervently supported Crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who came close to destroying our Country,' he posted to Truth Social. 3 Taylor Swift at the 67th Grammys Awards held at the Arena in Los Angeles on Feb. 2, 2025. Bruce Springsteen Lets Rip on 'Treasonous' Trump Administration
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Bruce Springsteen has denounced the Trump administration in the opening remarks of his tour, labeling it "corrupt, incompetent and treasonous." He was speaking Wednesday night as the first show of his Land of Hope and Dreams Tour got underway in Manchester, England. Newsweek has reached out to a representative for Springsteen outside of regular working hours via email for comment. Why It Matters The 75-year-old musician, known as The Boss, is an influential figure, the 69th most popular all-time musical artist, and 26th most popular classic rock/rock musical artist, according to YouGov. Springsteen, from a working class background with Irish roots, has released 21 studio albums and has been a mainstay in the cultural lexicon since he released Born to Run in 1975. Bruce Springsteen performs during the first night of 'The Land of Hopes and Dreams' tour at Co-op Live on May 14, 2025 in Manchester, previously endorsed President Barack Obama, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. In his endorsement of Harris in the 2024 Presidential election, he described President Donald Trump as the "most dangerous candidate for president" in his lifetime. What To Know Springsteen, perhaps best known for his post-Vietnam-war anthem Born in the U.S.A, has criticized Trump in the past but has stayed relatively quiet since his return to office in January. But that changed last night. Introducing his song, Land of Hope and Dreams, he said "Tonight we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experiment to rise with us, raise your voice against authoritarianism and let freedom ring!" Throughout the set, which spanned two-and-a-half hours, Springsteen made multiple references to American politics. Before the song City of Ruin, he said, "There's some very weird, strange, and dangerous s*** going on out there right now." "In America, they are persecuting people for using their right to free speech and voicing their dissent. This is happening now. In America, the richest men are taking satisfaction in abandoning the world's poorest children to sickness and death." Springsteen also referenced deportations. Trump has pledged to deport millions of immigrants without legal status as part of his push for mass removals; authorizing ICE to carry out arrests in or near sensitive locations and invoking the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) to expedite the removal of suspected gang members. "They are removing residents off American streets and without due process of law, are deporting them to foreign detention centers and prisons," Springsteen said. What People Are Saying Bruce Springsteen, speaking at his concert: "In my country they're taking sadistic pleasure in the pain they inflict on loyal American workers. They're rolling back historic civil rights legislation that has led to a more just and plural society. They are abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom. They are defunding American universities that won't bow down to their ideological demands." What's Next Springsteen's tour is scheduled to run until July and will see him play 16 shows across six European countries.
