Lauryn Hill plays to near near-empty stadium at New Orleans festival

Lauryn Hill was a surprise late addition to the Essence Fest lineup in New Orleans, and played to a near-empty arena. The annual festival was held this past weekend at the Superdome in New Orleans, with festival organisers announcing on Wednesday that the hip-hop icon would be performing on Friday at around midnight. Due to a number of factors, Hill ultimately took to the stage at 2.31am local time, wrapping her up set at 3:37am, as reported by The Superdome - which has a capacity of 83,000 - was nearly empty when she took the stage. The schedule for the Evening Concert Series was to start with Psyrin at 7.10pm, followed by Lucky Dave at 7.30pm and Coco Jones at 8pm. Glorilla was slated for 8:30pm, followed by The Isley Brothers at 9:15pm, Babyface at 10:10pm, Maxwell at 11:15pm, and Hill closing out the night at 12:35am. However, all acts ran late and as a result, Hill's slot was not clear until after 2am. Hill has a reputation for showing up hours late to her performances but it seems this time was beyond her control. Hill is best known for her 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which is widely considered one of the best of all time. It has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

Doechii opens up about overcoming suicidal thoughts and finding empowerment

Doechii, fresh off her 2025 Grammy win for Best Rap Album with Alligator Bites Never Heal, has opened up about a pivotal moment in her life when she overcame suicidal thoughts. In a recent interview with The Cut, the rapper recalled experiencing severe bullying in sixth grade, which led her to consider taking her own life. "I was getting bullied so bad that I was thinking about killing myself," Doechii revealed. However, a powerful realization changed her perspective. "I realized, 'Oh, f---, I'm gonna kill myself and then I'm gonna be the only one dead. The bullies aren't gonna be with me, and everything they said is not coming with me either.' I would just be gone." Instead of succumbing to the pain, she made a bold decision. "And then I was like, 'F--- that! F--- that s---! I'm not going for that!' And this wash of peace came over me, and I received 'I am Doechii,'" she explained. She described the revelation as a divine message, one that affirmed her self-worth and purpose. The Denial Is a River artist emphasized how embracing her identity gave her strength. "I made a choice, a decision. I am the most important character in this movie. This is my motherf---ing movie." Doechii's candidness about her struggles aligns with her dedication to transparency in her music. She cites Lauryn Hill as a major inspiration, striving to evoke the same emotional connection in young Black girls who listen to her music. "The feeling that I have when I listen to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the same feeling I want some other Black little girl to have when she listens to me," she said. As Doechii continues to rise in the industry, her story serves as a testament to resilience and self-empowerment.
