The Italian American Dish That Brought Together the Owners of NYC's Don Angie

The chef-owners of iconic West Village Italian restaurant Don Angie, Angie Rito and Scott Tacinelli, talk about their marriage and the nostalgic family memories behind the Italian American dishes they create together. The duo makes fresh tagliatelle and meatballs filled with veal and beef, which is 'an amalgamation of our families' recipes,' Rito explains. They reminisce about being tasked with rolling meatballs by their grandmothers while growing up and eating meatballs fresh out of the fryer, as they mix up their own meatballs made with milk-soaked bread, plenty of pecorino Toscano, and cooked garlic. Rito and Tacinelli make their own pasta from scratch, mixing together semolina, durum, and double zero flours. While the pasta dough rests and the meatballs cook they play a version of The Newlywed Game, mixing up their favorite colors and Rito's favorite food city (which is Osaka, Japan). Tacinelli puts the pasta dough through his grandmother's pasta machine as Rito tells the story of how they first met working at a NYC restaurant together 18 years ago. Reminiscing about the Feast of Seven Fishes celebration with both of their families together and their own guilty pleasure meals, Rito and Tacinelli share their own guilty pleasures. While cooking up a quick red sauce, they talk about their favorite red sauce joints in New York and raising their four-year-old son together. Finally, the meatballs are added to the 'Sunday sauce,' along with the quickly cooked noodles, a dollop of butter, and squeeze of lemon juice. The classic dishes are plated with breadcrumbs, pecorino, herbs, and freshly cracked black pepper. Rico and Tacinelli share how their Italian American heritage brought them together as they dig into the meal. Watch the first episode of Meals That Made Us on Eater at Home to see Rito and Tacinelli struggle to remember who said 'I love you' first and create one of their most nostalgic dishes in Don Angie's kitchen.

Guests on the premiere episode are Selena Gomez, Cara Delevingne, Kevin Nealon, Anthony Anderson, Ziwe, and BD Wong. Wong played Short's assistant in 'Father of the Bride' (1991). Gomez has a stronger connection. She costars with Short and Steve Martin on ' Advertisement Martin Short hosts "Match Game." Jan Thijs/Disney Advertisement Which brings us back to that drum roll (or series of rim shots). Short was born to soar in that firmament the way Joe DiMaggio was born to patrol center field or Toscanini to take the podium. All the way back to his 'SCTV' days, Short has been an unrivaled master of sincere insincerity and winkingly self-aware phoniness. His jokes are that much funnier for his always, always being in on them. He says on that first 'Match Game' 'Wow, time flies when you're phoning it in.' What other game-show host would dare say such a thing, let alone be able to get away with? The classic game-show host is to smarminess as musicians are to perfect pitch or basketball players to height. It's practically a job requirement. Think of Rayburn, Bob Eubanks ('The Newlywed Game'), Richard Dawson ('Family Feud'), Monty Hall ('Let's Make a Deal'), the list does go on. Even the sainted Martin Short as Jiminy GLock. Al Levine/Business Wire via AP Short takes the cause for such scorn, turns it inside out, and ties a bow on it. Playing smarm for laughs, he's so over the top he's just where he should be. It's hard to imagine someone better suited to host a game show. Well, wait, there is someone: Advertisement Mark Feeney is a Globe arts writer . Mark Feeney can be reached at

Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Pee-wee's Big Adventure and Help Fight Cancer

Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Pee-wee's Big Adventure and Help Fight Cancer originally appeared on L.A. Mag. Pee-wee Herman was born at L.A.'s Groundlings theater in the late 1970s. The zany alter ego of Paul Reubens started to emerge through small parts on game shows like The Newlywed Game and a late-night stage shows at the Roxy before becoming one of the biggest pop culture icons of the 1980s. The character inspired TV, movies, toys and even a Halloween costume. On June 14, the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his first feature film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, which was also the feature debut for director Tim Burton, with a screening, reunion and party featuring many members of the original cast and crew. Comedian Dana Gould will interview E.G. Daily, who played Pee-wee's girlfriend Dottie. Mark Holton who played Pee-wee's nemesis Francis will also hit the stage along with Diane Salinger, remembered for her monologue in the mouth of a giant dinosaur, her dream of Paris, France and her 'big but.' The event benefits Stand Up To Cancer, which is fighting the disease that claimed Reubens in 2023, and is produced by Nostalgic Nebula, who have also rounded up original crew members including producer Rich Abramson, co-writer Michael Varhol, production designer David Snyder and the Chiodo Brothers, who created the terrifying stop-motion Large Marge character for the film. The HBO documentary Pee-wee as Himself, premiered last month and has revived interest in Paul Reubens' life and career. The two-part film allowed the comedy icon to tell his own story, clarify misconceptions around him, and come out as gay. 'My whole career,' he says in the film. 'Everything I did and wrote was based on love.' This story was originally reported by L.A. Mag on Jun 6, 2025, where it first appeared.

Goff delivers a near-perfect performance to open Pro Bowl Games for NFC

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff delivered a near-perfect performance in "passing the test" and helped the NFC take a 14-7 lead over the AFC during the opening night of the Pro Bowl Games on Thursday. Goff, after getting some help from Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs via an NFL trivia contest, showed off his passing acumen by hitting ever target and then some in one minute, 30 seconds. He racked up 44 points for the NFC, five more than teammate Sam Darnold of Minnesota. Goff, Darnold and Tampa Bay's Baker Mayfield easily beat the AFC team of QBs comprised of Cincinnati's Joe Burrow, New England's Drake Maye and Pittsburgh's Russell Wilson. The passing game was the highlight of the six events on opening night. The NFC also won two of three relay races, a skills contest titled "satisfying catches" and a game show for NFL teammates titled "helmet harmony" that somewhat resembled "The Newlywed Game." The conferences split two dodgeball games and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams of the New York Jets gave the AFC a victory in "the big spike" with his powerful throwdown of a football. Some notable highlights: the Bosa brothers, Joey and Nick, turned their leg of a relay race into speed walking; and Bengals star Ja'Marr Chase made one-handed catches on the first three balls flung his way in "satisfying catches." Four more skills events will be broadcast Sunday, each worth three points, before the Pro Bowl Games conclude with a flag football contest. "We've got the lead, and that's good," NFC coach Eli Manning said. "It just shows the heart, the preparation, everything, the commitment of these guys. They've been grinding. They're looking forward to this. They want the three-peat. (Everyone) has been talking about Kansas City next week with a three-peat. Really, all eyes are on the Pro Bowl for the three-peat (for the) NFC right now."
