Singapore skies may sparkle with two meteor showers in coming weeks

SINGAPORE – Two meteor showers, including one known for its dramatic fireballs, are set to streak across Singapore's night sky in late July and mid-August if weather conditions allow. The Delta Aquariids and the Perseids, both annual occurrences, could be visible over the next few weeks, said The Observatory at Science Centre Singapore. The Delta Aquariids, which peak around July 30 , originate from Comet 96P/Machholz and appear to radiate from the constellation Aquarius. The comet was discovered in 1986 by American amate ur astron omer Donald Machholz, a prolific comet hunter with more than a dozen discoveries to his name. Though not known for high meteor counts, the Delta Aquariids produce a steady stream of two to five meteors p er hour, flashing into view at speeds of 40km per second. Some may leave glowing trails of gas in the sky. If cloud cover obscures the meteor shower as it peaks, stargazers may still see Saturn in the east after 11pm , according to the observatory. The Perseids – one of the best and most anticipated meteor showers of the year – will peak on the nights of Aug 12 and 13. It is best viewed during the pre-dawn hours between 3am and 6.45am, says the observatory. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Under ideal conditions, up to 100 meteors may be seen in an hour. However, the 2025 Perseids may be harder to spot, as moonlight from a waning gibbous moon – a bright phase between a full and half moon – could outshine the meteors. The moon will also be near the radiant point, which is the area in the sky from where the meteors appear to emerge, making them less visible, according to the observatory. Both showers return each year as the Earth passes through dusty trails left behind by ancient comets. No special equipment is needed to view the meteor showers. The best views are expected from dark, open areas such as parks, beaches or reservoirs. The observatory will not hold special viewing events for either shower, but its regular Friday night stargazing sessions will continue. These offer telescope views of stars and planets to the public. HKO to cancel all cyclone signals at 2.20 pm

HKO to cancel all cyclone signals at 2.20 pm Typhoon Danas has been moving away from Hong Kong. Image courtesy of the Observatory The Observatory on Sunday said it would cancel all cyclone warning signals at 2.20 pm, as Typhoon Danas moves further away from Hong Kong. It said while the Standby Signal No.1 was in force on Sunday morning, the storm had moved faster in a north-easterly direction. However, the Observatory advised people not to let their guard down. "There will still be swells. Members of the public should stay on the alert, stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports," they said. The Observatory said it will be extremely hot this afternoon, and there could be showers and squally thunderstorms triggered by the high temperatures. It said the very hot weather was expected to remain for at least a couple of days.

T1 to remain in force until noon on Saturday

T1 to remain in force until noon on Saturday Wutip is expected to make landfall near Leizhou Peninsula on Saturday. Graphic courtesy of the observatory The Observatory said it will assess whether it is necessary to issue the Strong Wind Signal No 3 on Saturday afternoon. Acting senior scientific officer Chong Sze-ning said the Standby Signal No 1 will remain in force until at least Saturday noon. She said Severe Tropical Storm Wutip was estimated to be about 730 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong as of 5pm and forecast to move north slowly, skirting the western coast of Hainan. "According to the present forecast track, Wutip will turn northeastwards gradually," Chong said. "It will make landfall near Leizhou Peninsula during the day [on Saturday] and then move across the vicinity of the Guangdong-Guangxi boundary." Chong said the issuing of a higher signal will depend on Wutip's intensity, distance from Hong Kong and local wind changes.

WildLuing on the Scottish island of Luing was created by Jack and his wife Emily after they were inspired while living in Kenya. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 Each of the lodges has been individually hand-crafted Credit: 5 There are eight different lodges all looking over Torsa Bay Credit: WildLuing has eight self-catered glamping suites, called WildSuites, that overlook Torsa Bay where you can regularly spot seals and otters. Something Jack and Emily said they liked about the Kenya lodges was that groups would gather for meals in a large communal space, then go back to their cabins. Each pod is custom built and there are some where you can bring along a furry friend too. And inside each of the lodges is a super king bed, which can be split into doubles if necessary, as well as a shower - and some even have a roll top bath. Cleverly, all of the cabins are positioned differently so no matter which you stay in, you will get views of the bay. Prices for the cabins start from £195 per night and each sleeps two. Unlike most other campsites, there's no shops or pubs, it's all about getting back to nature. As a result, on-site is a communal lounge and dining room. And it's a hit with visitors having been described as 'bucket list material.' The biggest place on-site is The Observatory which hosts up to 20 guests. You can't actually stay overnight but it can be hired out to use for yoga retreats, cooking school, dining events, wild swimming groups, and wedding receptions, according to the website. Around the bay is various types of wildlife, and from the private deck you'll be able to spot otters as well as grey and common seals. For the lucky ones, you might even see dolphins. The Isle of Luing is one of the Slate Islands in the west of Argyll in Scotland and has a population of just 200 people. WildLuing launched three years ago, and has received lots of positive reviews from visitors. One wrote on Tripadvisor: "Wowsers. If you haven't been, then this should be bucket-list material." Another added: "Wild Luing was simply sensational on all fronts." To get to the Isle of Luing, you'll need to get a ferry from North Cuan. Here's the UK's highest campsite has cosy camping pods and views of the country's tallest mountain. And more campsites in the UK near water to with sea views and luxury cabins.
