The Ballad of Wallis Island

There've been a host of great rom-coms down the years, but good comedies about heartbreak are altogether thinner on the ground. Their ingredients – big laughs and quiet grief – are a tough mix, but when they land, like La La Land, they tend to linger. Welcome, then, to La La Island. Writer-actors Tim Key and Tom Basden's three-hander, set on a remote British isle, have delivered a rare blend of unkempt charm, emotional precision and soulful folk music with this feature-length expansion of their own 2007 short, The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island. Key, best known on screen as Alan Partridge 's befuddled Sidekick Simon and as an award-winning stand-up off it, plays Charles, a jovial but lonely lottery winner who has retreated to this remote idyll to mourn his wife and wear out the LPs of his favourite folk duo, McGwyer Mortimer. Once the 'it' couple on the folk music scene, Herb McGwyer (Basden) and Nell Mortimer (Carey Mulligan) have long since split up – romantically and musically – but for Charles, their music is both the sound of happier times and the perfect articulation of his sadness. It's Indecent Proposal, only with more knitwear and plaintive strumming In the manner of Robert Redford in Indecent Proposal, only with a lot more knitwear and plaintive strumming, he's offered them a suitcase of cash in return for a reunion gig on his island. Only, he sold it to them both as a solo gig. It's a funny, smart premise that pays off in myriad ways. Director James Griffiths, who oversaw the original short, draws perfectly pitched turns from the small cast. Basden is suitably salty as the lovelorn, rumpled and initially conceited Herb, who discovers the deception first and initially recoils in the face of Charles's boundary issues and stream of tactless jokes. 'A cool half million should keep you in guitar strings, you bloody mercenary,' Charles tells him, jabbing him right where it hurts. There's something here in the relationship between art and money – how stacks of cash will test even the most robust principles – but the story really comes alive when Mulligan's Nell arrives with her amiable American husband (Akemnji Ndifornyen) in tow and forces Herb to finally face his past. Anyone who's held a candle to a past love when they've long since moved on will pour one out for the salty singer-songwriter, who deals with his heartache in all the worst ways. In folk terms, he's Dylan, she's Baez and they're well into their toxic, post-Newport phase. The songs, written by Basden, give a wistful voice to a love that once burnt brightly. There's a whimsical romantic subplot involving Sian Clifford's local shopkeeper that sugars some of the tougher truths here. But this musical comedy really sings when it's exploring the vagaries of the human heart.

Celebrity Big Brother winner will be crowned tonight

US singer and dancer JoJo Siwa, drag queen Danny Beard, and music star Chesney Hawkes are among the housemates battling it out to be crowned winner of this year's Celebrity Big Brother tonight. This year's ITV series has seen a couple of bust-ups, mainly involving Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke, who was booted from the house following instances of "inappropriate language" and "unacceptable behaviour". After a triple eviction, which saw the departure of EastEnders star Patsy Palmer, TV presenter Angellica Bell, and reality TV star Ella Rae Wise, the finalists were revealed. Former Dance Moms star Siwa, RuPaul's Drag Race UK winner Beard, The One and Only singer Hawkes, Love Island star Chris Hughes, and comedian Donna Preston, will all compete in the show's final on Friday night. Here we take a look at this year's finalists: JoJo Siwa Siwa, 21, first found fame on the US reality TV programme Dance Moms, which followed the lives of the children at the Abby Lee Dance Company, and their mothers. The young TV star appeared across a number of TV series on the Nickelodeon channel and has also released singles and EPs. In 2021, she competed on Dancing with the Stars in the US and was part of the first same-sex dancing partnership in the American show's history. A year later she was announced as a judge for season 17 of the US dance programme So You Think You Can Dance. Danny Beard Beard, 32, won the fourth series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK in 2022. The performer, real name Daniel Curtis, also appeared on Britain's Got Talent in 2016 where they performed Sweet Transvestite from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In January, they gave a speech at a vigil in Liverpool held for their friend and fellow Drag Race star The Vivienne, who had died earlier in the month. Chesney Hawkes Singer Hawkes made his name with the 1991 number-one single The One and Only. The 53-year-old is the son of The Tremeloes singer and bassist Chip Hawkes and has even performed with his father's 1960s band. In 2015, the singer competed on Celebrity MasterChef, where he was eliminated at the semi-final stage of the BBC cooking programme. Chris Hughes TV presenter Chris Hughes made his name when he appeared on the third series of the ITV reality TV series Love Island. The 32-year-old has gone on to present horse racing coverage for ITV and has appeared as a contestant on Pointless Celebrities, Tipping Point: Lucky Stars, and Channel 4's Celebrity Hunted, where he finished as a runner-up in 2018. Alongside his friend and fellow former Love Island contestant Kem Cetinay, Hughes embarked on a short music career in 2017, with the pair naming themselves Chris and Kem. The duo's song Little Bit Leave It reached number 15 on the UK singles chart. Donna Preston Actor and comedian Preston is known for her role in Netflix's The Sandman as Despair. Her other credits include the ITV comedy panel show Hey Tracey! and the Channel 4 reality TV series Scared of the Dark. The 38-year-old has also appeared in Catherine Tate's six-part Netflix mockumentary sitcom Hard Cell and the streaming platform's Good Omens fantasy series. The final of Celebrity Big Brother will air at 9pm on Friday on Virgin Media 1 and ITV1.

Celebrity Big Brother 2025 reveals first evicted housemate

2025 spoilers follow. Celebrity Big Brother has aired the first eviction of the series, as the public voted to save their favourites. Last night, Jack P Shepherd and Michael Fabricant received the most nominations from their fellow housemates, putting them at risk of eviction. They were joined by Mickey Rourke, who was given the killer nomination by JoJo Siwa. Meanwhile, Chris Hughes and Daley Thompson were exempt from the vote, having earned immunity earlier in the week. In tonight's episode, the celebrities anxiously gathered in the living room, where it was revealed that Michael would be leaving the Big Brother house. Related: Forgotten Gogglebox star makes surprise appearance on another reality show Speaking about his exit, Michael said: "I'm sad because we've all become so close friends, and I love everyone there. We really bonded, they were great people, they were kind." Addressing the nomination process, he added: "We all found it very difficult to come up with any sensible reason to nominate anyone. In fact, I went in to the Diary Room and had two people in mind, couldn't find any reason and in the end I nominated two completely different people!" Elsewhere in the episode, the celebrities woke up to a surprise power cut, leaving them without hot water, lighting and working appliances. Related: They were tasked with using their "star power" to restore the house's energy, starting with Chesney Hawkes who had to sing his debut hit 'The One and Only' while the housemates took turns to shower. Other performances included a political speech from Michael, a dance routine from JoJo and skits from the actors. Patsy Palmer quoted her iconic EastEnders catchphrase, hilariously shrieking "Mickey!" at her Hollywood housemate. Viewers were also treated to the first prank of the series, as the celebrities convinced Mickey that a disguised JoJo was new housemate "Billy". The pair shared multiple conversations together, before JoJo revealed her true identity to a baffled Mickey. Celebrity Big Brother airs on ITV2 and ITVX.
