Marcus Rashford urges Man Utd to copy Liverpool strategy
Marcus Rashford has criticised Manchester United's lack of direction since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement and believes the club can learn from Liverpool's rebuild under Jurgen Klopp. The 27-year-old joined Barcelona on loan this summer after being frozen out of United's first-team squad by Ruben Amorim last season. Rashford has won five trophies with United since making his first-team breakthrough in 2016 but the club have struggled to re-establish themselves as credible Premier League title challengers since Ferguson's departure in 2013. The England international believes United's lack of cohesion throughout the club over the last decade has been a key reason behind the team's lack of success and feels Liverpool's decision to stick with Klopp, who won seven trophies in nine years at Anfield, should be the blueprint to follow. 'Show me a successful team that just adapts,' Rashford said on The Rest Is Football Podcast. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. 'When Fergie was in charge, not only the principles for the first team – the whole academy set up so you could pick players from 15 years and over – that's a full generation. And they'd all understand the principles of playing the Man United way, right? 'You see it with any team that's been successful over a period of time – they have principles that any coach that comes in, any player that comes in, has to align to these principles or be able to add to these principles. 'Whereas at times I feel like United have just been… we're hungry to win, so we'll always try to adapt and to sign players that fit this system. But it's reactionary. 'If your direction's always changing, you can't expect to be able to win the league. Yeah, you might win some cup tournaments, but it's because you do have a good coach and you do have good players and you have match winners in your team – you're not there by accident. 'This is what some people forget. So yeah, we've been way below where we deem United to be. But then if you take a step back, which I've been able to do, especially over the last six months – what do you expect? More Trending 'People say we've been in a transition for years. To be in a transition, you have to start the transition. So it's like the actual transition's not started yet. 'When Liverpool went through this, they got Klopp, they stuck with him. They didn't win in the beginning. People only remember his final few years when he was competing with City and winning the biggest trophies – he certainly didn't win for three years. 'To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. So this is the thing that I feel – it's not easy. Because if it's not going well, the fans demand [change]. But this is where I speak about being realistic with what your situation is. 'I feel like we've had that many different managers and different ideas and different strategies in order to win… you end up in the middle of – you end up in no man's land.' 'I don't see it working' - Man Utd urged to avoid move for £32m Chelsea star
Manchester United have been urged to reconsider a move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson as they look to provide Ruben Amorim with more attacking firepower. Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves, and United are still hoping to bring in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as part of a new-look attack for Amorim next season. In addition, the Red Devils have been keen to add an out-and-out striker, particularly if Rasmus Hojlund were to leave the club. United explored a deal for Liam Delap before he chose to join Chelsea, while Viktor Gyokeres has only had eyes for Arsenal despite the chance to reunite with former boss Amorim. Ollie Watkins and Hugo Ekitike have been linked already this summer, but United are now reportedly one of several clubs considering a move for Chelsea striker Jackson. The Senegal international, who joined from Villarreal for £32million two years ago, has notched up 24 goals and 10 assists in 65 Premier League appearances. However, the 24-year-old finds himself down the pecking order after the arrivals of Delap and Joao Pedro, and as such the Blues are willing to entertain offers. A deal for Jackson may not come from cheap with Chelsea in no need to sell, and former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour believes the deal may not be in United's interest. 'The problem you have is the lack of number nines and the price goes up,' he told talkSPORT. 'But with some of the strikers Man United have had over the years, I don't think he would get anywhere near the top category.' Alan Brazil, meanwhile, feared that Jackson's wasteful finishing in front of goal would not make him a good match for a United side who struggled greatly to create regular chances last season. 'He can't finish,' the former United striker said. 'Well he can finish but he needs a lot of chances to score. 'And I would say he'd get more chances but Chelsea are a better side than Man United so I don't see it working. You never know and I wish him well but I don't see it working.' More Trending Jackson endured a frustrating spell at the recent Club World Cup, failing to score in the United States and banned for two games after picking up a red card against Flamengo. And given the impressive cameos from Delap and Pedro, Alan Shearer reckons that the writing could be on the wall for Jackson at Stamford Bridge. 'That wouldn't surprise me if he was sold to someone, whether in our country or not, that's one that wouldn't surprise me if they made that decision,' he said on The Rest Is Football Podcast. 'They've got some serious options in every forward position.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
