West End shows coming to Newport at Riverfront Cinema

This month, The Riverfront launched its initiative to bring live theatre to the big screen so that the city centre could experience some of the UK's best productions. One person already enjoying the initiative said: "A West End experience without the travel. "I've been to National Theatre Live screenings before at the cinema and am pleased that The Riverfront is now able to offer similar." The initiative features a repertoire of renowned West End shows, award-winning productions, and National Theatre Live stage plays. Tickets are priced at £12, and £11 for concessions, making it accessible for many to relish the vibrance of live performances amidst the comfort of a cinema. Over the summer, people can catch Les Miserables: The Staged Concert - 40th Anniversary, Jesus Christ Superstar: The Musical Arena Tour, and the National Theatre Live: Dr. Strangelove, among others. Les Misérables, celebrating its 40th year, presents an all-star cast including Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, and Carrie Hope Fletcher in a grandiose display of music and performance on May 17. Jesus Christ Superstar - The Musical Arena Tour, and National Theatre Live: Dr. Strangelove, starring Tim Minchin and Steve Coogan respectively, also promise compelling performances on May 28 and 29 respectively. Ben Foster and Vanessa Kirby are set to show off their talent in National Theatre Live: A Streetcar Named Desire - a production of Tennessee Williams' iconic drama on June 5, while Billy Elliot The Musical Live - 20th Anniversary, with music by Elton John, will add to the emotional intensity on June 12. In July, The Riverfront will also screen Bonnie & Clyde The Musical on July 2 and A Night With Janis Joplin The Musical on July 12, each a testament to the versatility of stagecraft. Members of the public can immerse themselves in the energy and emotion of these shows without leaving the city centre. The Riverfront has warmly invited all to book promptly, so as not to miss out on these shows. For tickets and more information, people can visit the Newport Live website or contact the box office directly.

Newport's Riverfront Theatre announces star of pantomime

The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre has announced that Gareth Tempest will return for this year's production of Rapunzel. The show will mark 20 years of pantomime at the heart of Newport's Christmas celebrations. Rapunzel will run from November 27, 2025, to January 4, 2026, and will be a hair-raising adventure full of mischief, magic, and mayhem. Audiences can expect the full panto experience, from jaw-dropping costumes and glittering sets to toe-tapping tunes and plenty of laughs. This milestone year is made even more special with Gareth Tempest stepping back into his much-loved Dame heels. Having first performed at The Riverfront in 2005's Dick Whittington as part of the Young Company, Gareth's return as Dame is a full-circle moment. Gareth Tempest said: "For me, panto is so important, not only because for many it's their first experience of theatre, but because it's one of the rare forms of theatre that actively engages the audience and gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility over the story. "At a time when young people are used to instant connection and engagement, it's wonderful to be able to offer this same feeling of connection in the stories we tell. "Having had the pleasure of working at The Riverfront for several festive seasons, it brings me so much joy to be a part of a company and team whose sole focus is to make the most magical and entertaining show for their audiences as possible. "Besides, everyone in Newport knows, nothing says Christmas like The Riverfront panto." This year's production of Rapunzel invites audiences into a magical world. When Rapunzel discovers the truth of her past, she realises her future is unwritten and the race is on to break a spell and find her freedom. Jamie Anderson, creative development manager, said: "Reaching our 20th pantomime is a landmark moment. "Panto has always been at the heart of what we do - it's more than just a show, it's a tradition, a community event, and for many young people, it's their first spark of theatrical magic. "I very much believe it to be one of the most formative and important parts of our theatrical culture. "To have Gareth (and more) return this year, someone who began their journey on our very stage, feels incredibly fitting and marks a truly special season." With more cast announcements coming soon, The Riverfront's 2025/2026 pantomime is one not to be missed.
