Richard O'Brien reveals this famous rocker tried to buy ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show' film rights

Owned by Jagger. In the new documentary 'Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror,' creator Richard O'Brien revealed that Mick Jagger and his team tried to buy the film rights to 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' after the stage show made its US debut in 1974. But director Jim Sharman advised that they shouldn't go for Jagger's deal, and with producer Lou Adler's help, they created the film without a big name attached. 8 Richard O'Brien, Tim Curry and Patricia Quinn a lobby card from 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show.' Getty Images 'One of the great things about this is that we were a fringe theater event, and we were allowed to make a movie,' O'Brien, 83, said in the doc, according to People. 'Not only that, but Jim was allowed to direct it. Not only that, but Brian Thompson was allowed to be the artistic director. Not only that, but Tim [Curry] was allowed to play the lead role,' the famous producer continued. 'That's very rare, especially when it's America and a Hollywood matter.' 8 Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Jonathan Adams and Peter Hinwood on a lobby card from 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show.' [There were] three people who wanted to play [Dr. Frank-N-Furter] — Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and of course, David Bowie,' Quinn, 81, recalled. '[They said] no Mick Jaggers, no Bowies, I'm having the original cast,' she added. 8 Mick Jagger with Sue Mengers at a stage production of 'The Rocky Horror Show' in Los Angeles. They agreed to present their own funds if the film didn't make that amount, per People. 'From the beginning, I had the feeling it was an event and something very, very special by the cast and the music, immediately,' Adler recalled of the original stage production, which premiered in London in 1973. 8 Richard O'Brien at the Oxford Union in March 2004. 'Sort of like cabaret, that you could go beyond sitting in a theater but you could enjoy the whole experience of it. And in the back of my mind, I just envisioned it as a film pretty much from the beginning,' Adler shared. 8 Lou Adler at his Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony in 2006. © Mark Savage/Corbis He continued, 'The casting for the Roxy, we had some very, very talented people, most of who were local actors. I thought pretty much I couldn't duplicate Tim Curry. That was somebody we had to bring over, and that went for Richard also. But not only the fact that you're getting the actor that was in it, you're getting the creator.' 8 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' stars Richard O'Brien, Tim Curry and Patricia Quinn. 'We had a turn out of the rock and roll celebrities, the John Lennons and everyone wanted to be there for it,' he said.

It's Astounding! NZ Post Stamps To Celebrate Kiwi Richard O'Brien's Iconic Rocky Horror Show

This May NZ Post is recognising NZ Music month by shining a light over at the Frankenstein place. Four new stamps will celebrate over 50 years of iconic rock'n'roll musical The Rocky Horror Show. Debuting in London's Theatre Upstairs at Royal Court in June 1973, the first run of British-New Zealander Richard O'Brien's satirical tribute to B movies, science fiction and horror moved to several other locations in London before it closed in 1980. A 1975 film adaptation helped to launch it into cult status, and New Zealanders got to see the show for the first time in July 1978, with regular productions touring the country in the following decades. 'Obviously, we're shivering with anticipation! Rocky Horror has a special place in New Zealand's creative history, and we're thrilled to honour its legacy and status as a global cult hit in the official stamp programme' NZ Post's Head of Collectables Antony Harris says. Born in the United Kingdom, Richard O'Brien moved to New Zealand at the age of 10 and spent his formative years in Tauranga and Hamilton. In 2004, a statue of Rocky Horror character Riff Raff, who O'Brien debuted, was erected to honour Hamilton's influence on O'Brien's oeuvre. Harris said the stamps feature high-impact black-and-white artwork with some recognisable pops of red. 'The stamps are based on officially licensed Rocky Horror Show artwork, with a unique interpretation by Wellington designer and musician Chris Jones.' Jones says it's been an honour and a challenge to try and do justice to Richard O'Brien's iconic characters and songs inside four very small frames. 'What's not to love about Rocky Horror from a visual perspective? It's an absolute feast. I've loved getting lost in the world of Brad, Janet and Frank more than I probably should have, and being reminded of just what a genius tongue-in-cheek comment on society the show makes.' 'Rocky's such a brilliant, zany collection of ideas and visuals with a long and proud history, and I'm very happy to be contributing to that." The stamps can be purchased on the NZ Post Collectables website or at selected PostShops within New Zealand – with an issue date of 7 May 2025. First, he will take to the stage on the Sunday billing of In It Together Festival at Old Park Farm in Margam on May 25, performing alongside the likes of Ronan Keating and James Morrison. ‌ And just weeks later, he will return to perform at Swansea Arena, in Richard O'Brien's legendary rock 'n' roll musical, The Rocky Horror Show, as part of a new world tour. He will reprise his iconic role as Frank-n-Furter, following a sold-out Australian Tour in 2024. Ahead of his string of performances in, WalesOnline caught up with the entertainer. Jason Donovan On... The Rocky Horror Show ‌ Jason Donovan in the Rocky Horror Show (Image: Photo by David Freeman ) He said: "I love the show. I say to everyone, and I don't get bored of saying it, I get to be a rock star every night, what's not to love? "Rocky Horror is not a Les Miserables or a Joseph, or a Phantom of the Opera, or a Sweeney Todd, but it is a part of pop culture and I love it for its enduring qualities and its complexities, it's an authentic piece, and there's a lot of people who can relate to Frank's dark journey, but there's also a lot of light. ‌ "Richard O'Brien writes some great songs - there's a femininity, a masculinity, it's not caught in one time, and it's a twist on everything." Pictured with the cast of The Rocky Horror Show (Image: Photo by David Freeman ) He added: "I love playing that character. I think it's well-written. It's a short show as well which I love, I'm into the idea of that. ‌ "Going to work each day is not a chore, it's a labour of love. "I think the show is great entertainment, it has such audience participation, and it's not just an evening at the theatre, it's an event. And with me steering the ship, and I'll say this because I can, it's going to go off. I put 100 percent into that character, I do something different every night, I like to be creative with it." Jason Donovan on... In It Together ‌ He said: "The company behind the event is always a very high grade. I hope I can live up to that, I'm sure I can. I think that will be a short little set of songs that we put together for those shows. In those sort of shows, you don't have a lot of time to really be creative, you want to hit the audience with the songs that they know, and that's what I intend to do." Jason Donovan on... Doin' Fine He said: "The show has caught the imagination of people. It's the first real tour of mine where I feel we've struck the right chord between all the shows on my catalogue, even some covers with my dad. ‌ "I look back a lot at my career, but I don't stand still. I'm always working, and I like to keep busy. I like to work with people and different casts and productions. The good thing is, I can jump from a Rocky Horror to my own show, and I get to do a broad range of different stuff, and I am not stuck in one genre." Jason Donovan on... Wales He said: "I have spent time in Wales in the past, not a lot of time in Swansea, but I am excited to be bringing the shows there. The last time, I think I was bringing my Midlife Crisis show to Swansea, which was my autobiographical show, but I guess the last time I was in that part of the world doing a show was probably Rocky Horror again, actually. ‌ "In Cardiff I did Joseph recently, I did Rocky recently in Cardiff, and Doin Fine, that was actually on Valentine's Day. "The country is great, the people are great, and I can't wait to get back there and perform again. "I am looking forward to performing at Swansea Arena. I hear it's big. I think the show (Rocky Horror) is a rock show, a concert with words. It's got that tone to it. ‌ "I know the coastline in Wales is pretty special. I'm always into exploring the coastline. I think it's the right time of year to do that. "I love coming to Wales. I love all the audiences across the UK. "I'm looking forward to seeing my Welsh friends for a few great shows and we'll see you in the summer." Jennifer Zamparelli lands role alongside Australian heartthrob Jason Donovan

Ex-2FM star Jennifer Zamparelli is set to return to the stage as she lands a role in The Rocky Horror Show. The hit musical returns to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin in August. The Dancing with the Stars presenter will take on the role of the narrator for the show's run from 11 to 16 August 2025. She will join Jason Donovan, who reprises his role as Frank N' Furter following a successful tour in Australia. Zamparelli and Donovan previously shared the stage in the 2013 Dublin production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert in 2013. Speaking about the role, Zamparelli said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be taking on the role of the Narrator in the iconic musical The Rocky Horror Show when it comes to Dublin in August. It's always been a favourite of mine. "It's sexy, outrageously funny and it's going to be so much fun working with such a brilliant cast, including my old pal – the legend that is Jason Donovan." The mum-of-two previously admitted she "had better" when she kissed Australian heartthrob Donovan on stage in 2013. She told us previously: "Jason is amazing. He's not bad. I've had better. I can't believe the stamina that man has because the show is all singing and all dancing. I don't know how they did it. I only did two weeks." Jennifer also told us at the time how her "first love is stage" – and it is how she met her now husband Lau. "Because my first love is the stage, and I've always had a love for the stage. Sure that is how I met Lau. I directed a play. I had a theatre company in Bristol, and I directed him in a play. That's how we met. "That all got pushed to the side so when it came about, I absolutely went for it. "But it was just phenomenal what they do. I'm just in awe of them. To do something like this and to be asked to host the 2025 launch is great." Directed by Christopher Luscombe, The Rocky Horror Show has been seen by over 35 million people worldwide and features classics such as Sweet Transvestite, Dammit Janet and The Time Warp. Tickets for The Rocky Horror Show are on sale now, with prices starting from €35. For more information, visit
