Liberal Jimmy Kimmel announces Italian citizenship. Ciao, baby!
Unfortunately, I've never been to Italy, but I've visited other countries in Europe. We can enjoy the beauty in other parts of the world and learn a lot from other cultures. But I still return to America happy to be home. I love my country, and I'd never become a citizen of another country, let alone do so because of America's current political climate. Yet, that's exactly what late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel just did. During an appearance on the "The Sarah Silverman Podcast," on Aug. 7, Kimmel said he obtained Italian citizenship and alluded that it was because of President Donald Trump, though he didn't expressly say that. "A lot of people I know are thinking about where they can get citizenship," Silverman said. Kimmel replied, "I did get Italian citizenship." "What's going on is as bad as you thought it was going to be," Kimmel said. Silverman replied, "Way worse." "It's so much worse. It's just unbelievable," Kimmel said. "Like I feel like it's probably even worse than he would like it to be." It's not clear if Kimmel plans to move to Italy or continue to live and work in the United States. Ironically, as Trump makes dramatic changes that will help the American people, late night talk shows like Kimmel's have taken a hit. "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert's show was canceled in July, even though his ratings beat Kimmel's and 'Tonight Show' host Jimmy Fallon's. Trump, not one to shy from trash talking his political foes, has predicted that Kimmel and Fallon will be canceled next. I have a sliver of respect for liberals who make good on their threat to leave America when a Republican is elected. At the same time, it's silly. We are blessed to live in the most powerful country in the world, and it's the people who elect our president, Republican or Democrat. If a person as wealthy and famous as Kimmel isn't happy to live in America because of Trump, by all means, don't let the door hit you on the way out. When an intelligent and funny guy like Kimmel says America under Trump is worse than he thought it would be, what does he mean? Our economy is thriving, the border is secure, taxes have been cut and there might soon be peace in the Middle East and Ukraine thanks to Trump. Jimmy Kimmel has confirmed he has obtained Italian citizenship, linking the move to concerns over Donald Trump's second term as president of the United States. Speaking on The Sarah Silverman Podcast, host Sarah Silverman mentioned that many people she knew were exploring alternative citizenship options. Kimmel responded, 'I did get Italian citizenship,' before criticising Trump's presidency. 'What's going on [with Trump] is as bad as you thought it was gonna be. It's so much worse. It's just unbelievable. I feel like it's probably even worse than he would like it to be.' Kimmel, who has often expressed opposition to Trump, said he does not criticise individuals who have changed their political stance. Referring to public figures such as Joe Rogan questioning recent policies, he said, 'The door has to stay open. If you want to change your mind, that's so hard to do. If you want to admit you were wrong, that is so hard and so rare to do. You are welcome.' Trump recently took aim at Kimmel on Truth Social after CBS announced The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would conclude at the end of the 2025–26 season. Trump claimed Kimmel would be 'next to go' in what he called the 'Late Night Sweepstakes,' describing several hosts as lacking talent. Kimmel responded by saying, 'I'm hearing you're next. Or maybe it's just another wonderful secret,' also referencing a Wall Street Journal report alleging Trump sent a 'bawdy' letter to Jeffrey Epstein in 2003 for his 50th birthday. Kimmel's comments come as public and media debate continues over the direction of Trump's second term and its impact on political and cultural discourse in the United States.

Jimmy Kimmel says he obtained citizenship in Italy amid Trump presidency
Jimmy Kimmel said he obtained Italian citizenship in a move seemingly motivated by the United States' current political climate under President Donald Trump. The late-night host revealed the news during an appearance on comedian Sarah Silverman's podcast, "The Sarah Silverman Podcast," on Aug. 7. "A lot of people I know are thinking about where they can get citizenship," Silverman said. Kimmel replied, "I did get Italian citizenship." The "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" host has long been an adversary of the president's policies. Trump, for his part, has openly criticized Kimmel's career over the years. USA TODAY has reached out to Kimmel's reps for comment. Kimmel says 'what's going on' is 'unbelievable' Kimmel didn't specifically cite Trump's presidency for his new Italian citizenship, but he and Silverman did allude to the current state of American politics. "What's going on is as bad as you thought it was going to be," Kimmel said, to which Silverman replied, "Way worse." "It's so much worse. It's just unbelievable," Kimmel said. "Like I feel like it's probably even worse than he would like it to be." Silverman added, "Every once in a while I'll Google Trump regrets or MAGA regrets." The comedians went on to elaborate on the political climate, with Kimmel mentioning Joe Rogan and other Trump supporters who have questioned the administration's policies. Kimmel is latest comedian to consider overseas move If Kimmel opts to move abroad, he wouldn't be the first comedian to do so amid Trump's presidency. Rosie O'Donnell, who notably has a long-standing feud with the president, moved to Ireland in January as Trump entered office. She said in a TikTok video in March that she is relieved not to be "singled out by the President of the United States." "I feel healthier (and) I'm sleeping better without the stress and anxiety over what was happening politically in the country," O'Donnell said. Similarly, Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi also headed across the pond in 2024 and haven't been back to the United States since. "We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, '(Trump) got in,'" DeGeneres said during an event in South West England on July 20.
