‘The Hunting Wives' Moves To Netflix For U.S. Following Lionsgate & Starz Separation; Premiere Date Set

EXCLUSIVE: The upcoming thriller drama The Hunting Wives, previously set at Starz, has a new home. Netflix has picked up the exclusive U.S. rights to the series, starring Malin Åkerman and Brittany Snow, which comes from showrunner Rebecca Cutter (Hightown), Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment. It will debut on the streamer on July 21. The Hunting Wives, an adaptation of May Cobb's best selling novel, was greenlighted by Starz in October 2023 when the network was part of Lionsgate, with Lionsgate Television serving as its in-house studio. The show, also starring Dermot Mulroney and Chrissy Metz, was filmed last year and is now completed and in the can. The move also made sense for Starz which is moving towards owner economics post-separation with its programming strategy focused on series the network fully controls or co-produces. Starz recently opened writers rooms for several new projects in contention for a series green light, all fully owned. It is unclear whether The Hunting Wives falls under the restructuring charge of $177.4 million Starz recently took 'related to a strategic reassessment of the company's content portfolio.' Netflix's The Hunting Wives exclusive deal is for one year, sources said. Meanwhile, Lionsgate's worldwide television group is in the process of selling the show to international buyers, which had been the plan since the time the series was earmarked for Starz, a largely domestic player. The Hunting Wives tells the story of Sophie (Snow) and her family's move from the East Coast to deep East Texas, where she succumbs to socialite Margo Bank's (Åkerman) irresistible charms – and finds her life consumed by obsession, seduction, and murder. The series is executive produced by writer-showrunner Cutter, Erwin Stoff (The Serpent Queen) for 3 Arts Entertainment and Cobb. Cutter, who is in development on two projects for Netflix with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Cobb is repped by WME, Victoria Sanders & Associates, Jackoway Austen Tyerman and Linden Entertainment. Snow is repped by Gersh and Principal Entertainment LA. Åkerman is repped by UTA and Entertainment 360. Metz is repped by CAA, Luber Roklin Entertainment and Hansen Jacobson Teller. Samantha Morton made an OBE for services to drama and charity

The 48-year old English star, known for her roles in Longford and The Serpent Queen, is being honoured for her services to drama and charity. She grew up in Nottingham and was raised in foster care before she began acting at the city's Central Junior Television Workshop. She landed her first TV roles in 1991 in Soldier Soldier and Boon before starring in period dramas including Emma in 1996 and Jane Eyre in 1997. Morton garnered international acclaim for her performance in Carine Adler's indie film Under The Skin, for which she received her first British Independent Film Award (Bifa) nomination for best actress in 1998. In 2002 she won the best actress award for psychological drama Morvern Callar, and in 2022 she was given the Richard Harris Award for outstanding contribution by an actor to British film. The actress and director has also been nominated for two Oscars – one in 2000 for playing Hattie in Sweet And Lowdown and four years later for In America. In 2008 she received a Golden Globe for her portrayal of child murderer Myra Hindley in TV movie Longford. Morton also directed and co-wrote the TV drama The Unloved, based on her first-hand experience of the British care system, and won a best single drama award at the Bafta TV Awards in 2010. She starred alongside Tom Cruise in 2002 sci-fi action film Minority Report and played Mary Lou in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (2016). More recently she has starred in psychological thriller series The Burning Girls, based on the novel by CJ Tudor, and drama The Whale (2022), alongside Brendan Fraser, who won an Oscar. Morton last year received the Bafta fellowship, the academy's highest accolade, dedicating the award to children in care. She accepted the award from producer David Heyman, who she worked with on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and said: 'This is nothing short of a miracle. 'Film changed my life, it transformed me and it led me here today. 'I dedicate this award to every child in care, or who has been in care and who didn't survive.'
