Aussie, 82, allegedly stole perfume from Changi Airport shop in March, arrested on return to S'pore in July An 82-year-old Australian man was arrested in July for two cases of shop theft in Changi Airport four months earlier. The police were alerted on March 18 at about 9.33am after a box of perfume, valued at $149, was discovered missing from the display shelf of The Shilla Cosmetics & Perfumes outlet in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 1. With the aid of images from CCTV cameras, officers from Airport Police Division established the identity of the man, who was seen allegedly leaving the outlet with the unpaid item earlier that day, but he had already departed from Singapore. Follow-up investigations revealed that the man had also allegedly taken another box of the same perfume from the same outlet without paying for it on March 13. Both items were not recovered. On July 24, the Australian returned to Singapore and was arrested while in transit for another flight at Changi Airport. He will be charged in court on Aug 4 with two counts of theft in dwelling, which carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine or both. The police said on Tuesday, July 22, that they were informed about the thefts, which took place on June 23, by staff members of The Shilla Cosmetics & Perfumes outlet at the airport's Terminal 1, According to preliminary investigations, the man allegedly stole three bottles of perfume, totaling $488, and left the store without paying. Later, when the outlet's employees were doing a stock-take, they found the missing perfume bottles. The police added that the two were arrested before they could leave Singapore after the airport police division's follow-up investigations revealed their identities. However, they did not say when the suspects were nabbed. Additionally, it was discovered that the woman was allegedly acting as a lookout when the man stole a cardholder valued at S$596.33 from another retail establishment in Terminal 1 and a bottle of perfume valued at S$158.40 from another Shilla establishment in the transit area of Terminal 3. The pair, who are anticipated to face charges on Wednesday, July 23, had all five stolen items retrieved, according to the police. Police stated that they treat shoplifting cases seriously and that violators will face harsh consequences in line with the law. "Offenders should not think that they can evade capture by quickly boarding a flight. In a statement on July 7, the police said they were alerted to a case of shop theft at an outlet of The Shilla Cosmetics & Perfumes on June 9, at about 10.05am. Preliminary investigations revealed that on June 8, the man had allegedly taken two bottles of perfumes from a display shelf and left the store without paying. The perfumes had a total value of $491.70 and were found to be missing by staff members while they were taking inventory stock. With the aid of CCTV cameras, officers from the Airport Police Division established the identity of the man, but he had already left Singapore. The man was arrested on June 13, when he flew back to Singapore on transit for another flight. Further investigations revealed that he had also stolen a perfume valued at $167 from another The Shilla Cosmetics and Perfumes outlet in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 1 prior to his arrest.
