Mason McTavish contract talks with Pat Verbeek: Long Term or Bridge?
Mason McTavish contract talks with Pat Verbeek (Image Via Twitter) With training camp nearing, the Ducks still have one thing to check off their winter offseason to-do list, and that is to sign 22-year-old center Mason McTavish. The third overall pick in 2021, McTavish has become an integral part of Anaheim's future. However, a stalemate has occurred in negotiations, with McTavish wanting a long-term deal while Verbeek would prefer a short-term bridge contract. The clock is ticking, and both sides are aware that the outcome could affect how the Ducks move forward, both in the short and long term. Pat Verbeek 's experience in dealing consistently with RFA negotiations Pat Verbeek has earned a league-wide reputation in terms of tough RFA negotiations. "Part of my philosophy is I like to do bridge deals with players," Verbeek said earlier this year. 'It allows the players two things. It allows them to have no pressure to grow and get better before they have the long-term contract.' This mirrors the former contract battles of Zegras and Drysdale, in which the two agreements happened to be strung out into training camp in 2023-the delay that gave rise to early-season struggles and injuries. Mason McTavish: Increasing worth, long-term ambition Reports are saying McTavish's camp is aiming for a longer-term deal with a higher average annual value. 'Pat Verbeek wants a bridge deal, (a) two to three-year deal. McTavish wants a longer deal; he wants more AAV than they're offering,' said Jimmy Murphy. Should The Habs Pay This Price For Mason McTavish? | The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro Aug 7 2025 McTavish's case has been reinforced by steady development: 43 points in his rookie year, 42 in just 64 games during his sophomore year, and 52 last year, all the while with hardly any offensive support from Anaheim. Simultaneously, his defensive play and playmaking have changed to make him a potent two-way player. Avoiding a costly repeat Friedman spoke of Anaheim's official line: 'If you want the money, you're going to have to earn it.' Still, the risk goes with delaying discussions into training camp, just as happened with Zegras and Drysdale. With the installation of Joel Quenneville as head coach, McTavish could break out if he signs and hits the ground running right away. Ruben Hyppolite modeled his game after this legendary Bears linebacker
Ruben Hyppolite modeled his game after this legendary Bears linebacker The Chicago Bears added to their linebacker group in the 2025 NFL draft with the selection of Maryland's Ruben Hyppolite II in the fourth round. Chicago had a need at the position after losing veteran Jack Sanborn in free agency, and they'll look to call on Noah Sewell, Amen Ogbongbemiga, or Hyppolite to have a prominent role alongside veterans T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edumnds. The team has already told Hyppolite that they feel he can be a versatile weapon for them on defense, and coordinator Dennis Allen will work with the rookie to find what role best suits him. Coming to Chicago as a linebacker means there is legendary history to live up to, and Hyppolite has modeled his game after one of the best linebackers to ever come out of the franchise: Hall of Fame Mike Singletary. "Mike Singletary, I've been watching interviews and highlights of him since I could remember," Hyppolite told The Sick Podcast with Adam Rank. "I kind of credited a lot of the way I play the game to just watching him and hearing him speak. Navorro Bowman who played with Singletary coached me a bit at Maryland and a lot of his drills and the things that he taught me came from Coach Singletary. There's a lot of those things that I still take in and apply to this day." Modeling his game after Singletary is a trait that'll make him loved by the Bears fanbase, and if he can play even a quarter of the way in which Singletary did for years in Chicago, the franchise will have struck gold with their fourth round pick. Rams rookie WR Konata Mumpfield learned how to run routes from watching Davante Adams tape
Rams rookie WR Konata Mumpfield learned how to run routes from watching Davante Adams tape New Rams wide receiver Konata Mumpfield is a big fan of watching game tape. The 2025 seventh-rounder out of Pittsburgh is known as a route technician and told LaQuan Jones of The Sick Podcast that he learned how to run routes by watching the Los Angeles Rams' current and former stars. Mumpfield said he grew up watching Davante Adams as well as Cooper Kupp. If there were any two receivers Sean McVay would want a young player to emulate, it's those two. And now, Mumpfield will get to learn from Adams himself and Kupp's apprentice, Puka Nacua. Despite is late round, Mumpfield was highly consistent during his collegiate career. He recorded at least 40 receptions for 500 yards in all four of his years in college (two at Akron and two at Pittsburgh) with at least five touchdowns in three of the four years. Mumpfield finished with 217 total receptions for 2,691 yards and 19 touchdowns. He doesn't figure to play an important role on the offense right now with at least four receivers ahead of him on the depth chart, but the Rams seem to have seen enough from Mumpfield to take him with their last 2025 draft pick. Now, it's up to him to make a name for himself this offseason ahead of the regular season.
