New Golden Bachelor's Comments On Age Draw Backlash

There's a new golden bachelor in town, but I'm not sure if he will be as polished as previous gentlemen in his position. In season 2 of The Golden Bachelor, the lucky leading man is Mel Owens, a 66-year-old former NFL player who was a linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams. Before that, he played college football for the University of Michigan Wolverines, and let me tell you, it's pretty obvious because he's got the problematic locker room talk down pat. On a June 10 episode of the Michigan football podcast MGoBlue Podcasts With Jon Jansen, Mel revealed what he's looking for in the bachelorettes for the upcoming season premiere. He said during the casting process, the producers asked him," 'What's your preferences?' so I just said, '45 to 60,' just being honest." After Mel was chosen, he claimed he had lunch with the executive producer and told him, "If they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them. He said the producer told him, "Oh, man you can't—this is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor. But they're going to be hot, don't worry about it, don't worry about it,'" while also explaining he "'can't use the word cut.'" According to the series website, the executive producers of The Golden Bachelor are Claire Freeland, Jason Ehrlich, Bennett Graebner, and Andrew Frank. Mel said the explained cut is "an NFL term." But he didn't stop there. Elaborating on his age parameters, like he's recruiting a high school senior quarterback, he said, "They've got to be fit, because I stay in shape and work out and stuff. And I told them to try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs. That kind of stuff." When the podcast host asked what he was looking for, Mel added that he was looking for someone who's "a lifetime learner" and "enjoys life, and workouts, stays fit, eat and have fun," and "be energetic." Unfortunately, Mel's comments are going viral, and the reactions on the r/thebachelor Reddit thread show that people are not too pleased. One user wrote, "i already hate this man with a burning passion, and not in a way that makes me want to watch him on TV. This is why I don't mess with The Bachelor anymore." Someone else said, "Honestly I'm side-eyeing the exec producer the most - he told you these things and you still decided to move forward with him?" "The wigs and artificial hips comment is actually cruel and deranged. Nobody wants their hair to thin or to have a hip replacement but it happens. How horrible to say a woman isn't worthy of him because of it. He's gross. I'm definitely not watching, unless only women who want to tell him off apply for the sole purpose of doing so on-air," another user wrote. This person wrote, "Locking in my prediction now: he's going to pick one of the youngest women on his season, dump her within six months, and by this time next year he'll be going to Bachelor hangouts and flirting with the 20-somethings. "Ew, really? Men who can't appreciate women their own age and demand younger women are gross. I'm so grateful my husband only seems to find me more attractive as I age! And why shouldn't he? He's aging too, something these men all to often forget 🤦🏻‍♀️," another person said. This Redditor said, "Listing his range as 45-60 is so weird. I'm turning 44 this summer, and I can't imagine being with a man 20+ years older than me. Even if he is "fit." This guy needs to be humbled." "Why in the world did they pick someone so unlikeable? They ruined everything that people liked about the first season," another Redditor wrote. And finally, someone hilarious asked, "have men ever considered literally just shutting the fuck up?" The general consensus is there's a red flag on the play for the former NFL linebacker. What are your thoughts about the new Golden Bachelor? Let's huddle in the comments.

He added that he relayed the message to producers, 'If they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them. This is not 'The Silver Bachelor,' this is 'The Golden Bachelor.'' 5 Mel Owens. Disney According to Owens, the producer told him, ''You can't use the word cut.' I go, 'Well, that's an NFL term.'' Owens, who played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1981 to '89, also said that he requested that the women had 'to be fit, because I'm staying in shape and work out and stuff. And I told them [to] try and stay away from artificial hips and the wigs.' Owens was married to Fabiana Owens from 2002 until she filed for divorce in 2020. Together with his ex-wife, Owens has two sons, Lucas, 20, and Andre, 18. 'The Golden Bachelor' is a spinoff of 'The Bachelor' franchise following older people in their 'golden years' looking for love. His comments faced swift backlash. 'He doesn't seem like the type for 'in sickness and in health'' one fan said on X, formerly Twitter, while another slammed him, 'Awful. I won't watch with a jerk in the lead.' Another person remarked, 'Sounds like a real winner. Shocking ABC doesn't care that they're going to make women fight over a shallow sexist jerk.' 5 Women in their 'golden years' on 'The Golden Bachelor' Season 1. ABC Another comment read, 'doesn't sound like much of a mystery as to why he's still a bachelor. Anyone who chooses to go on that show deserves whatever disaster they get,' while someone else sarcastically said, 'He's single? Shocking. Very shocking.' The Post reached out to reps from ABC and 'The Golden Bachelor' for comment. This is just the latest scandal for the spinoff of 'The Bachelor' franchise. Season 1 of 'The Golden Bachelor' followed Gerry Turner, 72, as he looked for love. After he chose Theresa Nist, 71, and married her in January of 2024, the short-lived couple divorced just three months later. 5 Theresa Nist and Gerry Turner on 'The Golden Bachelor' Season 1. 'It was a zero factor, zero. Absolutely. I was just so surprised that he even said that,' Nist said on 'The Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast.' She added, 'I knew about the cancer a long time ago. And the way Gary presented it to me was that, 'The doctor said that I'm going to die of old age before this cancer gets to me.'' Turner also caused controversy during the show when a story emerged alleging that he lied about not dating after his wife's death. 5 Gerry Turner, the 'Golden Bachelor' on Season 1. Brian Bowen Smith/ABC That wasn't Turner's only scandal. Shortly before the 'Golden Bachelor' finale in November, a woman, who went by the name of Carolyn, told the Hollywood Reporter that Turner flirted with her for three months after his wife passed, and he asked her to move in with him in 2018. Their relationship, however, fizzled out in 2019 when Turner allegedly dumped her after she gained 10 pounds mere months before his high school reunion. 'I'm not taking you to the reunion looking like that,' Carolyn claims Turner told her. Turner denied the accusations, saying that he doesn't 'have time to think about some of the other stuff.' 'I guess I haven't really looked at it as how accurate it is,' Turner told the New York Times, adding he's only given the article a 'cursory look.' 5 Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist on 'The Golden Bachelor' Season 1. The Walt Disney Company 'I've more looked at it in terms of timing, and how it really doesn't fit with all of the positive things that are going on in my life right now.' An official premiere date for 'The Golden Bachelor' Season 2 hasn't been announced yet, but it's expected to air in the fall.

Owens recently revealed that he requested to date younger women aged 45–60. His candid comments about age, physical fitness, and partner preferences have opened up a larger conversation about ageism and expectations in reality dating shows. Mel Owens' 'Age Cutoff' request raises eyebrows before filming starts Mel Owens, 66, who spent eight seasons with the Los Angeles Rams before becoming an attorney, recently joined the ABC reality show The Golden Bachelor as its Season 2 lead. However, his comments on the MGoBlue Podcast triggered immediate media attention. He disclosed that ahead of filming, he asked producers to limit contestants to women aged between 45 and 60. "If they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them," Owens admitted telling a producer. Although his request was met with resistance from producers who reminded him it's The Golden Bachelor, not The Silver Bachelor, Owens stood by his preference, saying he's looking for a younger, more energetic partner. Owens emphasizes fitness, lifestyle, and "Natural Look" in ideal match Aside from age, Owens also outlined what he's seeking in a potential partner. 'They got to be fit, because I'm staying in shape and work out and stuff,' he said. He added, 'Try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs. You know that kind of stuff.' He described his ideal partner as a 'lifetime learner' who values health, energy, and a zest for life.
