New Golden Bachelor's Comments On Age Draw Backlash

Buzz Feed6 hours ago

There's a new golden bachelor in town, but I'm not sure if he will be as polished as previous gentlemen in his position.
In season 2 of The Golden Bachelor, the lucky leading man is Mel Owens, a 66-year-old former NFL player who was a linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams.
Before that, he played college football for the University of Michigan Wolverines, and let me tell you, it's pretty obvious because he's got the problematic locker room talk down pat.
On a June 10 episode of the Michigan football podcast MGoBlue Podcasts With Jon Jansen, Mel revealed what he's looking for in the bachelorettes for the upcoming season premiere. He said during the casting process, the producers asked him," 'What's your preferences?' so I just said, '45 to 60,' just being honest."
After Mel was chosen, he claimed he had lunch with the executive producer and told him, "If they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them.
He said the producer told him, "Oh, man you can't—this is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor. But they're going to be hot, don't worry about it, don't worry about it,'" while also explaining he "'can't use the word cut.'"
According to the series website, the executive producers of The Golden Bachelor are Claire Freeland, Jason Ehrlich, Bennett Graebner, and Andrew Frank.
Mel said the explained cut is "an NFL term."
But he didn't stop there. Elaborating on his age parameters, like he's recruiting a high school senior quarterback, he said, "They've got to be fit, because I stay in shape and work out and stuff. And I told them to try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs. That kind of stuff."
When the podcast host asked what he was looking for, Mel added that he was looking for someone who's "a lifetime learner" and "enjoys life, and workouts, stays fit, eat and have fun," and "be energetic."
Unfortunately, Mel's comments are going viral, and the reactions on the r/thebachelor Reddit thread show that people are not too pleased.
One user wrote, "i already hate this man with a burning passion, and not in a way that makes me want to watch him on TV. This is why I don't mess with The Bachelor anymore."
Someone else said, "Honestly I'm side-eyeing the exec producer the most - he told you these things and you still decided to move forward with him?"
"The wigs and artificial hips comment is actually cruel and deranged. Nobody wants their hair to thin or to have a hip replacement but it happens. How horrible to say a woman isn't worthy of him because of it. He's gross. I'm definitely not watching, unless only women who want to tell him off apply for the sole purpose of doing so on-air," another user wrote.
This person wrote, "Locking in my prediction now: he's going to pick one of the youngest women on his season, dump her within six months, and by this time next year he'll be going to Bachelor hangouts and flirting with the 20-somethings.
"Ew, really? Men who can't appreciate women their own age and demand younger women are gross. I'm so grateful my husband only seems to find me more attractive as I age! And why shouldn't he? He's aging too, something these men all to often forget 🤦🏻‍♀️," another person said.
This Redditor said, "Listing his range as 45-60 is so weird. I'm turning 44 this summer, and I can't imagine being with a man 20+ years older than me. Even if he is "fit." This guy needs to be humbled."
"Why in the world did they pick someone so unlikeable? They ruined everything that people liked about the first season," another Redditor wrote.
And finally, someone hilarious asked, "have men ever considered literally just shutting the fuck up?"
The general consensus is there's a red flag on the play for the former NFL linebacker. What are your thoughts about the new Golden Bachelor? Let's huddle in the comments.

Pope Leo XIV Blesses Commanders Rival Ahead Of 2025 Season

Pope Leo XIV Blesses Commanders Rival Ahead Of 2025 Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last year in the playoffs, the Detroit Lions needed all the help they could get against the upstart Washington Commanders, who buzz-sawed coach Dan Campbell's favored team in a 45-31 shellacking. Advertisement The Lions are coming back into 2025 with some extra juice, though, as they figure to once again join Washington as a Super Bowl contender. The Lions have The Vatican on their side. Pope Leo XIV - seriously - has blessed an NFL player ahead of the 2025 regular season. And really ... playfully ... Washington fans shouldn't be as upset about this as Chicago Bears fans surely are. The first-ever American pope just happens to be from Chicago ... and has long been well-known for his fandom of the Bears and the White Sox and all things Windy City. As it happens, Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta and his new bride, Callahan Dellinger LaPorta, scheduled a vacation in Rome ... Advertisement And yes, they got blessed by the Pope, as the young NFL tight end demonstrated for all to see as took to Instagram to show off the photo on Wednesday. "Thank you to a very busy man for blessing me and my bride. A special moment we'll never forget,'' he wrote. Bears fans can be mock-unhappy about this ... but Chicago has spent a great deal of time in the NFC North basement and doesn't figure to be a match for the powerful Lions anyway. And the Commanders? As they and the Lions prepare to give chase to upsetting defending champion Philadelphia toward a Super Bowl run, they'll take any "blessing'' they can get. Comedian Jeff Ross Reveals Shocking Reason Tom Brady Agreed to Do Netflix Roast

It was just revealed why Tom Brady agreed to participate in Netflix's live roast of him - and the reason might surprise you. Comedian Jeff Ross, who cohosted the Roast of Tom Brady in May 2024 alongside Kevin Hart, shared during a Wednesday, June 26 appearance on The Howard Stern Show Brady's motivation for being the subject of the Netflix special. On the day of the roast, Ross asked Brady, "Why are you doing this?" According to Ross, Brady replied, "I love this kind of humor. People are too snowflaky right now," On top of that, Brady allegedly sent Ross a text that day saying: "No fear. This is what we do." The comedian also opened up about how to roast came to be, sharing that it took several years to get to the taping from when he first connected with the NFL star via Instagram. "I had seen him looking at my Instagram on Super Bowl Sunday a few years ago," Ross said. "I was like, Why the f**k is Tom Brady on my Instagram?' I go, 'Oh, I had some jokes up. Maybe that's how he unwinds before a big game.' And he f***ing wins!" It's likely that Ross is referring to Brady's Super Bowl win in 2021 as the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his seventh and final Super Bowl win as an NFL quarterback. "I hit him the next day on Instagram going, 'Dude, it's time for a roast. You obviously love this s**t,'" Ross continued. "He writes me back and we start talking and it turns out my agent and his agent, they work together. And we put a deal together to do a roast. Netflix is like, 'Sure!'" But just as Ross's plans were coming to fruition - Brady announced he had to decided not to retire from professional football, after previously announcing he was going to in February 2022. "He agreed and he retired and we were like, 'Let's go! Now's our chance.' Then he unretired," Ross said. "I was like, 'No, we got to wait until he's done playing. It's a little more fun.'" That opportunity came after Brady's second retirement in February 2023. However, the long-anticipated event was pushed back even more due to Brady's split from ex-wife Gisele Bündchen in October 2022 after 13 years of marriage. "Then he was going through a divorce and I'm like, 'Let's wait for that,'" Ross explained. The event featured Brady getting roasted by comedians like Nikki Glaser and Andrew Schulz, celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Ben Affleck and former New England Patriots teammates Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman.
