Manager issues Milos Kerkez statement as Liverpool transfer moves step closer

Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who has now been omitted from Hungary's squad to face Sweden on Friday Hungary national team boss Marco Rossi has revealed Milos Kerkez will miss Friday's international friendly against Sweden as his transfer to Liverpool moves closer. The Bournemouth left-back had been expected to feature against the Swedes in Budapest but it appears the Reds are now closing in on Arne Slot's defensive target. Speaking in a press conference on Thursday, Rossi issued a cryptic message when explaining that both Kerkez and striker Barnabas Varga would be unavailable. ‌ Rossi said: "Of course, a few problems may creep in, for example, for various reasons, neither Milos Kerkez nor Barnabas Varga will be in tomorrow's match." ‌ Kerkez appears to have teased the transfer is nearing completion himself by captioning an Instagram post with eye emojis. He has already given his approval to Liverpool, who have been working on finalising a deal with Bournemouth. Talks have been slightly complicated by the fact Cherries technical director Simon Francis has been in the United States this week representing Bournemouth in The Soccer Tournament in North Carolina. Francis has been leading negotiations with former Bournemouth chief Richard Hughes, who is now working as Liverpool's sporting director. Kerkez quickly emerged as Liverpool's primary left-back target as they look to sign competition for Andy Robertson. Greece international Kostas Tsimikas is expected to depart Anfield this summer and is attracting interest from both the Premier League and Europe. If Kerkez, 21, does sign on the dotted line at Anfield, he will team up with international team-mate Dominik Szoboszlai on Merseyside. Meanwhile, the Reds also remain in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a club-record deal for Florian Wirtz. So far, they have seen two offers rejected by the German club but negotiations are advanced and are expected to reach a positive conclusion soon. ‌ Kop boss Slot is understood to have met with Lyon attacker Rayan Cherki over the past week but the Frenchman now looks poised to join Manchester City. Liverpool were only likely to pursue a deal if an agreement for Wirtz failed to materialise as they look to strengthen their forward options. The Premier League champions have already sold goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford in an £18m deal as the Republic of Ireland international was keen to pursue regular football. An approach from Barcelona for Luis Diaz has also been rejected and Diaz has since admitted he would be open to staying at Anfield this summer even though a new contract does not currently look to be on the cards.

Ex-Ireland international makes temporary Bournemouth return after Dubai spell

Former Ireland international Harry Arter will make his return to Bournemouth colours this summer. The 35-year-old was most recently spotted playing in the UAE with Second Division team Precision FC, a side that also included former Manchester United and West Ham prospect Ravel Morrison. Speaking in an interview last January with the Dubai-based side, Arter described his time at Bournemouth as his career highlight. Having spent his first three seasons there in League One, and the next two in the Championship, he helped them win promotion to the Premier League. Arter made a total of 69 appearances in the top-flight with Bournemouth, and another 25 while on loan at Cardiff City. 'My career highlight is getting promoted with Bournemouth to the Premier League,' he said last January. 'It was an incredible rise for the club and, as a group of players, we were kind of mirroring the club's journey. 'We had setbacks as young players and three or four years previous to that the club nearly went out of business, so it was a real good time for the club and for us as individuals.' Arter will be back in Cherries colours in June when a legends team travels to North Carolina to take part in The Soccer Tournament (June 4-9). Arter will join Dan Gosling, Charlie Daniels, Lewis Grabban and Junior Stanislas, among others. The 19-time capped former Ireland midfielder left Bournemouth in 2020 for Nottingham Forest, but after his first season at the club he was told that he could leave. However, Forest's promotion to the Premier League meant a contract extension until June of last year was triggered. After loan spells at Charlton and Notts County, he left last summer and joined Precision.

Want to showcase Indian football with West Ham: Rahul KP

Rahul KP will represent West Ham at The Soccer Tournament (TST) in the US next month Panaji: Rahul KP can already feel the weight of the West Ham United jersey. Ever since the Premier League club announced that the Odisha FC winger will represent them at The Soccer Tournament (TST) in the United States next month, Rahul's phone hasn't stopped buzzing, with messages and calls. Whenever he steps out, youngsters back home in Kerala look at him in awe. 'A lot of people think that I'll play in the Premier League, while others think it's just a seven-a-side tournament and it's no big deal,' Rahul told TOI on Wednesday over a video call. 'But I look at it differently. This is an opportunity for me to showcase Indian football , show the world what we can do. Whenever I go outside (the house), I meet a lot of kids who are amazed that I'll play for West Ham at TST. They want to do that one day.' Not everyone gets to play at TST, dubbed the most exciting and highest stakes 7v7 football festival in the world, where legends, celebrities, and professionals battle for the prize money of a million dollars. At West Ham, Rahul will be joined by club legend Anton Ferdinand as player-coach, former Wales international James Collins, besides teammates Ricardo Vaz Te (Portugal) and Mauro Zarate (Argentina). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Rahul, 25, is the only player from Asia in the team and the first Indian to feature for the Premier League club at TST. 'West Ham were looking to recruit a player from Asia. For me, Rahul stood out as the ideal candidate as he is one of the most exciting young talents in India, with all the attributes required to succeed in European football. I also saw this as a pivotal chance to help an Indian player make an international impact and, in addition, help put Indian football firmly on the global map,' said Odisha CEO Raj Athwal, who was approached by the EPL club due to his longstanding involvement in English football. For Rahul, it's a dream come true. 'It's a big move because growing up as a kid, I always dreamed about playing for a big club in Europe. When you start playing football, big European clubs come to mind. You want to wear their jersey, represent them, go out there and play. I want to make an impression, hopefully also inspire a generation (of Indian players),' said Rahul. At TST, the Indian winger will rub shoulders with some big names which includes the likes of Argentina legend Sergio Aguero, Portugal's Luis Nani and Italian maverick Mario Balotelli, all playing for Aguero Team. Rahul wants to put his best foot forward and ensure that he grab, with both hands, whatever opportunities the event throws at him. 'It's not just a 7v7 tournament. It's a place where some big names will assemble. Maybe I can get some contacts, talk to people, get a trial, or even a chance to train with West Ham in London,' said Rahul, who has made seven appearances for the senior national team. Despite featuring at TST for the first time, Rahul is unlikely to feel out of place. He's grown up playing Sevens, a cultural staple in Kerala, where football rests high up on social priorities. He himself hails from Thrissur in northern Kerala, a region where Sevens is a way of life. 'I can never forget where I come from,' said Rahul. 'I wouldn't have been here if there was no Sevens in Kerala. I wouldn't have been here if there was no five or three-a-side football because I wasn't born as an ISL or national team player. Sevens helped me a lot. It made me physically strong, helped lose fear since we were up against bigger players, involved in duels all the time. As a kid, we never dreamed of playing for the national team or club, it was always Sevens. We always thought about Sevens and floodlight football.' For Rahul, Sevens football now takes an entirely different meaning.
