Sarawak pushes Malaysia's clean energy transition, eyes solar leadership

KUCHING (Aug 15): Sarawak is committed to accelerating Malaysia's clean energy transition through stronger collaboration between federal and state agencies, private investors and technology innovators, said State Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
In his keynote address at The Solar Week Malaysia 2025 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Dr Hazland said renewable energy, particularly solar power, is no longer a distant option but an immediate necessity for both environmental sustainability and economic resilience.
He highlighted Sarawak's strategic investments in renewable energy infrastructure ― including hydropower, solar hybrid systems for rural electrification, and green hydrogen production ― as a blueprint for integrated sustainable development.
'These initiatives reaffirm both Malaysia's and Sarawak's commitment to achieving ambitious renewable energy targets, in line with the nation's climate change commitments and Sarawak's Post-Covid19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
'By embracing solar energy, we create not only a cleaner environment but also a stronger, more resilient economy,' he said, according to a statement from his office.
The statement added that Dr Hazland officiated The Solar Week Malaysia 2025 as guest of honour, where he delivered an impactful opening address that underscored the urgency and opportunity of Malaysia's clean energy transition.
The event, held at Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, brought together policymakers, renewable energy companies, financiers, researchers, and community leaders from across Malaysia and the region.
It explored the latest innovations, market trends, and policy developments shaping the solar energy sector.
Its programme included high-level panel discussions on grid integration and stability, financing and investment strategies for large-scale solar projects, next-generation photovoltaic technologies and regulatory frameworks to accelerate adoption.
There were also technical presentations by leading solar technology providers and case studies of successful urban and rural solar installations.
Dr Hazland praised the organisers for creating a platform that unites visionaries and practitioners, expressing confidence that the event would generate tangible outcomes in advancing Malaysia's sustainable energy ambitions.
