Govt cancels all events for 3 days as mark of respect
Panaji:
The Pramod Sawant-led govt on Saturday issued an order directing all govt departments to cancel or postpone festive programmes and celebrations in the state for the next three days. The decision has been taken as a mark of respect for those that lost their lives in the stampede during the Shree Devi Lairai Jatra at Shirgao.
'In view of the tragic stampede that occurred during the Shree Devi Lairai Jatra at Shirgao, and as an expression of condolences to the departed and their families. govt of Goa hereby directs that all govt-supported festive programmes and public celebrations scheduled over the next three days be cancelled or postponed. All heads of departments, govt corporations and autonomous bodies are hereby instructed to ensure strict compliance of this directive,' said under secretary (general administration department) Shreyas D'Silva.
The tourism department also cancelled 'The Spirit of Goa Festival' that was being held at the SAG Grounds, Colva.
'The department prioritises the safety, well-being, and sentiments of the people of Goa during this difficult time and expresses its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims,' said the tourism department in a statement.
