D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is concerned Commanders' stadium deal will collapse
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser wants to bring the Commanders back to the site of RFK Stadium. She's worried that's not going to happen. Appearing Tuesday on The Team 980, Bowser was asked by Kevin Sheehan to put a number on her level of concern regarding the deal, with 0 being 'not concerned' and 5 being 'very concerned.' She went with a 4. The problem is that the D.C. Council isn't moving quickly enough for her or the Commanders' liking. The goal is to get approval in place so that the project can get started. The deal between the Commanders and Bowser calls for D.C. Council to approve the stadium by July 15. The team recently said that even a small delay could keep the new facility from opening in 2030. D.C. Council is clearly operating on its own timeline. Public hearings have been set for July 29 and 30, two weeks after the July 15 deadline comes and goes.

Have the Commanders done enough to improve the defense?
Are the Commanders bringing back too many of their own players? On Monday, the Athletic's Ben Standig, a guest on the "Kevin Sheehan Show" (The Team 980), brought up this question. Standig noted that followers of the team could easily tend to look at individual Commanders on defense and say some defensive players had very good seasons in 2024. Yet, Standig added, "the defense was ran on so much of the it's tricky in that regard." The host of his own podcast, "The Last Man Standig," then went further, asking, "Is Will Harris an upgrade over Jeremy Chinn? Jeremy Chinn was pretty good as the season went Chinn's contract was more noteworthy than Will Harris. It suggests the marketplace wanted Jeremy Chinn more than it wanted Will Harris. So it is hard to say on paper that this (signing) has been an improvement." How about Johnny Newton? Yes, he got off to a rough start, requiring surgery on both feet in the offseason. So he could come back better prepared for his second season. However, the team encouraged Jonathan Allen to look elsewhere. Does anyone know that Javon Kinlaw will be better than Allen? Or will Newton be better than Allen? Standig concluded, by way of an analogy, "It feels like they are bringing the band back together, and the band was off key for a good chunk of their performances last year. It is confusing, and I kind of get the guys they brought back. By the way, the defensive line has 11 guys that could make the team, but is it good enough to improve?" It is true GM Adam Peters is trying to improve the floor/weakest links of various positions on the team. Thus, there have been moves to improve the depth at wide receiver and offensive line. But can one conclude the defensive signings have made the defense better? We simply don't know. Peters does have his work cut out for him in the sense that he does not have a first-round draft choice on the team from any of Ron Rivera's four NFL drafts. That will continue to be a large obstacle for the next several years as Chase Young, Jamin Davis, Jahan Dotson and Emmanuel Forbes have all vastly under-produced thus far in their NFL careers. Not a single of Rivera's first-round choices even concluded his rookie contract with Washington. Ouch! What about Daron Payne's 2018 first-round selection? Sheehan and Standig agreed that Payne has not lived up to his 2022 season, resulting in Rivera giving Payne his second contract. But Payne has been disappointing in 2023 and 2024. Sheehan offered optimism that Payne is only age 27 and might still have a couple of really good seasons in him. What type of free agent contract might Commanders WR receive?
Wide receiver Dyami Brown: Is he somebody the Commanders should bring back next year? And if so, what is Brown's free agent value to NFL teams? That was the subject that came up for a segment of the 'Chris Russell Show' on Wednesday afternoon on The Team 980. Here is a glimpse from Russell's second hour, Wednesday. Brown has played out his rookie contract during his four years with Washington and could go on the open market soon if he is not re-signed by the Commanders' GM, Adam Peters. A caller suggested Dyami Brown is now worth a contract of somewhere between $10-13 million per year. Chris Russell, the show host, countered, 'I am guessing, I have no clue. I am looking at the scarcity of weapons on the market (receivers). I am looking at the very good year he had, including in postseason play.' 'I know he had the key fumble on the second series against the Eagles (NFC Championship game). I am just looking at the trajectory, so I don't think $18-20M is that absurd. Maybe a little high, sure, but in a league where we now pay some receiver $35M, I don't think it is that absurd.' The caller countered that if Brown is asking the Commanders for that much, then for the production the Commanders received from Brown, he would rather draft a receiver out of college who can provide the same production for a cheaper price. Russell expressed that the caller made a fair point. Russell later suggested that NFL teams value Brown at perhaps $14M. If so, one team could still offer much more than the market value. The next caller pointed to Brown's inconsistency, which seemed to occur each of his four seasons with Washington. The caller suggested Brown would only generate a contract of $6 or $7M annually. During a commercial break, Russell went to Spotrac to discover what the resource suggests is Brown's market value. Russell reminded listeners that in 2024, Brown had a modest 30 receptions for 308 yards (10.3 YPR) and a single receiving touchdown. In three postseason games, Brown collected 14 receptions for 229 yards (16.4 YPR) and one touchdown. To his surprise and all his listeners Russell expressed Spotrac has Brown's base calculated value at 3 years $7.3M and his ultimate calculated market value at 1 year, $1.937M. Russell concluded, 'I am clearly overrating Dyami Brown.' The 'Chris Russell Show' segment was a very good listen on Wednesday afternoon.
