Roxanne Perez living up to 'The Prodigy' nickname heading into WWE Money in the Bank
Roxanne Perez living up to 'The Prodigy' nickname heading into WWE Money in the Bank Show Caption Hide Caption John Cena warns media, he will ruin wrestling, he is the last real champion in WWE After making history at WrestleMania 41, John Cena warns the media that he will ruin wrestling and he is the last real champion in WWE One way to identify who are the top wrestlers is by who has a nickname. More often than not, those with a tag are some of the greats. There's 'The Heartbreak Kid' Shawn Michaels. 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair. 'The Tribal Chief' Roman Reigns. 'The Viper' Randy Orton. 'The Man' Becky Lynch. 'The Champ' John Cena. The list goes on and on. What do they all have in common? All the aforementioned stars earned their names during their career. It took championship reigns, iconic matches and memorable moments while earning the crowd's praise for them to be bestowed the honor. Then there's Roxanne Perez. From the moment she signed with WWE at age 20, Perez has been dubbed 'The Prodigy.' Meaning a highly talented youth, the nickname set incredible expectations for her. How can you be named 'The Prodigy' and not become an instant success? The bar was set incredibly high for the woman standing at 5-foot tall. So far, Perez has soared above every benchmark set on her. She won the NXT Women's Championship in her first year with the company in 2022, and became the third-ever two-time title holder last year while becoming the face of the women's developmental division. Success at NXT set the foundation, but the real test was going to be whether Perez could continue rolling on the main roster. Like a baseball player, you can be great in the minors, but your legacy ultimately lies in the major leagues. It's a small sample size, but the early returns show 'The Prodigy' really is the perfect nickname. She had a record setting day at the Royal Rumble in February and was in Elimination Chamber one month later. Now officially called-up, she'll have her third main roster premium live event of 2025 in the women's Money in the Bank match. Not bad for being the youngest star on the main roster at 23 years old. ''The Prodigy' is not just a nickname; it's something that I've created myself into through hard work,' Perez told USA TODAY Sports. 'The main roster officially knows that Roxanne Perez, 'The Prodigy,' is here, and she's here to stay, and she's here to make waves.' Roxanne Perez's building confidence The Perez appearing on Monday Night Raw isn't the same one that showed up on NXT three years ago. Gone is that bubbly, innocent new kid on the block who captured fans' hearts. Now is a more blunt, unapologetically vicious star who doesn't care 'what everybody says,' as she puts it. It's a side of Perez that oozes with swagger, but it took time to develop what shows up on screen. Perez said she's glad she spent three years in NXT rather than jumping on the main roster early. In the developmental stage, she believes she really got to work on what she wanted to portray. It's a complete contrast to what helped her establish a spot in the company, but Perez noted she 'evolved into who I was really meant to be.' Showing a successful darker side of herself proved to management she was ready for the call-up. She had developed something that clicked. However, with that came the next challenge: keeping the confidence off-screen. One could argue no one on the roster was as big of a WWE fan as a kid than Perez. It was around age 8 the Laredo, Texas native knew she wanted to be a wrestler. Some wrestlers from that time like CM Punk and Natalya − who she famously got to talk to on "Total Divas" − are still on the roster, and Perez was able to look up to the leaders of the women's revolution as she started getting in the ring. Those same people she admired are now coworkers, and Perez admitted that has led to some bits of imposter syndrome. There were doubts she belonged alongside decorated stars – even as she started racking up her own accolades – and plenty of training was needed to overcome the feeling. 'To have the name prodigy on my back, it was definitely kind of hard mentally because it was like, well, am I 'The Prodigy' when I'm surrounded by all of these people?' she said. 'I really had to kind of find that confidence in me and realize, no, yeah, I am. Just because I'm surrounded by these people that I've watched growing up doesn't mean that I can't be on the same level as them. 'I really had to start training myself to be like, 'you belong here.' And now I feel like everybody knows that I do belong here.' The work Perez has put into her confidence has carried over into the ring. Whether it's shunning away the cheers or scheming menacing methods of victory, Perez has found the right persona for her, and she's still crafting it. She still views every time she appears as an audition, and even for someone on a meteoric rise like her, it feels like the correct approach for a young star. While she's had the opportunity to get her feet wet in the main roster, Perez is in the most delicate stage one could be on in WWE. Success in NXT doesn't mean it carries over onto the main roster. For every star that stays hot, there's another that didn't pan out. It leads to limited opportunities, being forgotten and the eventual release from the company. Perez said she could've been someone that flamed out following her time with NXT, but its the consistent effort being put in that has led to the solid start and building a foundation for it to last. 'I'm trying to prove myself every single night,' she said. 'You can't get comfortable, ever.' Joining the Judgment Day, ready for Money in the Bank The Royal Rumble match was nothing new for Perez after appearances in 2023 and 2024, but it was the 2025 edition that gave a peek of the leap she was bound to take. She was entrant No. 3 and lasted a women's record one hour, seven minutes and 47 seconds, finishing runner-up to Charlotte Flair. It was a monumental moment to put the young star in, and she nearly clinched a WrestleMania match when she competed in the women's Elimination Chamber in March. Even though neither match resulted in victory, it was clear Perez was ready for the big stage, officially joining Raw on May 19. The move to Raw has also led Perez into an intriguing storyline. With assistance from Finn Balor, she has tried to make her way into The Judgment Day, a move she believes will really help further her career. There's been pushback from Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez as Perez is trying to get in the good graces of the group by helping out in matches and offering gifts. 'I think it's going well, I don't know if you'd say the same,' she said. 'Some of them are kind of enjoying my time there. Some are not, but that's OK.' One notable moment happened when Perez gifted Dominik Mysterio his beloved chicken nuggets. Fans instantly believed it would lead to her becoming the new on-screen lover for the Intercontinental Champion, therefore leading to heat with his current beloved in Morgan. Regardless of where it leads, it feels like there's just something about Mysterio that makes women swoon. But when asked about what makes Mysterio such a hot commodity, Perez didn't understand what the fuss was about. 'No one says I folded or that I'm in love with him,' she said. 'I don't know who says I find him intriguing in that way. I'm just trying to be in everybody's good graces. 'I think everybody just needs to see how it unfolds.' While she works into the group, Perez will get another massive opportunity with the women's Money in the Bank match on June 7. Win and she gets a championship match at any moment in the next year. It's always been a dream for Perez to compete in Money in the Bank, and she's hoping to make memories during the match where she becomes forever linked with the 2025 show. She also may have given a hint at what she would do if she wins; she said her favorite moments are when the briefcase is cashed in on the same night. So Iyo Sky or Tiffany Stratton aren't safe at all if it's "Rox in the Bank." The PLE win would result in someone that will 'make a change in the woman's division in so many good ways,' Perez said. It could further launch her way toward the top of the roster, and cement 'The Prodigy' wasn't just a nickname for Perez; it was her destiny. 'Everything is going exactly the way that I wanted it to, in the way I manifested it to, and the way I just worked hard for it too,' she said. The biggest stories, every morning. 'WWE Raw' Preview: Roman Reigns Addresses Paul Heyman Controversy
Roman Reigns is in Sacramento for the go-home episode of "WWE Raw" just five days away from "WrestleMania 41." Reigns is scheduled for his first match since the "Royal Rumble" PLE. He will headline night one of "WrestleMania" alongside CM Punk and Seth Rollins in a triple threat match. In recent weeks, Reigns' "Wiseman," Paul Heyman, has caused controversy. Advertisement Heyman refused to obey "The Tribal Chief's" order to deny Punk's request for him to be in his corner at "WrestleMania 41." Heyman insists that he is loyal to Reigns, but Punk is his best friend. Rollins also claims he's owed a favor after he decided against attacking Heyman on the April 7 episode of "Monday Night Raw." Reigns will address Heyman's surprising act of defiance in an in-ring segment on the red brand. Throughout AJ Styles' feud with Logan Paul, Karrion Kross has gotten involved in the "Phenomenal One's" business. Kross claims that he wants a ruthless side of Styles to show up in his "WrestleMania" match against Paul. Styles vows to show Kross his violent side in singles action on Monday. You can also expect to see Women's World Champion Iyo Sky, Rhea Ripley, and Bianca Belair on "WWE Raw." All three women will be competing for the top female prize on the red brand. Things have gotten heated between Ripley and Belair, but Sky has made it clear that she won't be treated like a paper champion. Advertisement World Heavyweight Champion Gunther has lit a fire under his "WrestleMania 41" challenger Jey Uso after making things personal. During the March 31 episode of "WWE Raw," Uso was tied to the ropes, and he was forced to watch "The Ring General" beat and bloody his brother Jimmy. Also featured on the show will be further development in a potential implosion of The Judgment Day. As of late, Finn Balor has not been too pleased with his stablemate Dominik Mysterio. Both men will be joining Penta and WWE Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker in a fatal four-way match for the gold at "WrestleMania." Related: WWE Adds Major Stipulation to 'WrestleMania 41' Match

WWE, AEW power rankings (March 2025): It's John Cena's world after the heel turn heard 'round the globe
WWE's annual Elimination Chamber delivered the shock of a century with a John Cena heel turn, instantly overturning more than two decades of wrestling history with a twist most suspected would never come. Cena's attack on Cody Rhodes may have gotten the world talking, but how has it affected the Uncrowned power rankings? After an explosive weekend, here's our take on where things stand. 10. Roman Reigns (Prev: 4) It's a bit of a tumble for 'The Tribal Chief' — largely due to his absence from our screens since the Royal Rumble. Having Reigns square off with Seth Rollins was one hell of a teaser, but the WWE has done little to follow up on it since. As the road to WrestleMania 41 gathers pace, surely that has to change soon? 9. Seth Rollins (Prev: NR) Seth Rollins looked at the top of his game as he almost went the distance in a hard-hitting Elimination Chamber match. After an explosive segment on 'WWE Raw,' Rollins now stands in the enviable position of having two huge potential rivals for WrestleMania 41 in CM Punk and Roman Reigns. Maybe those whispers of a triple threat match aren't so fanciful after all… 8. Ricochet (Prev: NR) The most athletic man in wrestling has struck gold with his recent AEW run, embarking on a demonic heel turn seemingly designed to raise a middle finger at those who claimed he had no personality. The former WWE star will now get the recognition (and perhaps the beating) that he deserves when he squares off against Swerve Strickland in a hotly-anticipated grudge match Sunday at AEW Revolution. 7. Adam 'Cope' Copeland (Prev: 7) If AEW Grand Slam provided a reminder of just how much the fans love Cope/Edge, then hopefully Revolution will be the moment AEW capitalizes on that adoration by giving us the result we need to see. After a rather bumpy few months, it truly feels like Cope has to beat Jon Moxley this weekend, and I'll be keeping everything firmly crossed for that outcome. 6. Jey Uso (Prev: 3) After a shock Rumble victory, 'Main Event Jey' propelled himself straight into a podium place in last month's rankings. While the unstable Yeet momentum feels as over with the fans as ever, Uso's elevation to the world title scene has lost a little bit of urgency next to the scenes in Toronto. He's still a massive draw, and a potential contender for the top spot in future, should things go his way at WrestleMania 41. 5. Gunther (Prev: NR) For all his stature in WWE, it felt like Gunther took a bit of a backseat in January, hence his exclusion last time around. A few weeks later and things couldn't be more different, as 'The Ring General' is busy brutalizing opponents on 'WWE Raw' while mocking his upcoming WrestleMania 41 opponent, the ever-popular Jey Uso. I suspect he's about to look stronger than ever heading into Las Vegas. 4. CM Punk (Prev: 2) While he didn't win the Elimination Chamber as I'd expected, CM Punk feels hotter than hell right now in WWE, consistently proving himself to be the biggest draw on Monday nights. Just listen to his explosive promos taking aim at Cena and The Rock this week. Punk may have a lot of targets right now, but it's his intriguing dynamic with Cody Rhodes that suggests to me there could be something even bigger in the works for wrestling's greatest antihero. 3. The Rock (Prev: NR) Despite a rambling return on 'WWE SmackDown,' The Rock blew expectations out of the water at Elimination Chamber, delivering the WWE's most shocking segment since the build-up to last year's WrestleMania. Where does it all go from here? After Saturday's shock turn, your guess is as good as mine, to be quite honest. But one thing is for sure: 'The Final Boss' is as big of a force in WWE as ever. 2. Cody Rhodes (Prev: 2) As if his bruising ladder match with Kevin Owens at Royal Rumble wasn't painful enough, WWE's Universal Champion was thoroughly put through his paces this Saturday, as he was literally flogged by the heel trifecta of The Rock, John Cena and Travis Scott. While I'm sure it hurt like hell, it had the side effect of making 'The American Nightmare' look like the center of the wrestling universe — and seriously raising the stakes for his WrestleMania 41 showdown. 1. John Cena (Prev: 5) It was the heel turn that shook the world, as perhaps the most beloved man in wrestling followed his Elimination Chamber win by turning on his spiritual successor, the babyface champion Cody Rhodes. In one fell swoop, WWE's epic swerve overturned every assumption we had about the Cena retirement tour, while turbocharging anticipation for WrestleMania 41. Roll on March 17, when we should get to hear directly from the man himself on 'WWE Raw' and the next phase of the plan begins to take shape. 10. Chelsea Green (Prev: 9) As we saw again in Toronto, Chelsea Green is an absolute credit to the blue brand, rapidly cementing her reputation as one of the most entertaining female wrestlers of the past decade. As I said last month, what Green really needs now is a serious rival for WrestleMania 41 who can raise the stakes when it comes to her holding onto her beloved US Championship. 9. Alexa Bliss (Prev: 6) The returning Alexa Bliss put in a solid shift at Elimination Chamber, dispatching Roxanne Perez with a suitably dramatic Sister Abigail and reaching the final three. The former women's champion has always been a big draw in WWE and there's no reason to think this run won't be different. Over the next few weeks, we should see where this one develops. 8. Liv Morgan (Prev: NR) After an exceptionally physical performance in the Elimination Chamber, Liv Morgan reminded us all why she remains such a compelling force in WWE. Having taken a beating from Bianca Belair, Morgan now faces the equally daunting challenge of reviving the fortunes of WWE's women's tag division alongside Raquel Rodriguez. If anyone stands a chance at pulling that off, it's Morgan. 7. Rhea Ripley (Prev: 3) It was a bruising defeat on 'WWE Raw,' as Rhea Ripley was bested by Iyo Sky, losing the WWE Women's World Championship after 56 days. So much for that dream WrestleMania match with Bianca Belair. On the other hand, WWE has thrown a few curveballs for 'The Eradicator' over the years, so perhaps we shouldn't discount the possibility that she ends up in that match, one way or another… 6. Charlotte Flair (Prev: 5) One month on from her Royal Rumble victory, 'The Queen' hasn't progressed beyond first gear when it comes to her big return run. Given that we're still seven weeks away from WrestleMania 41, that isn't a massive problem just yet. But let's hope she and Tiffany Stratton can find their stride soon — and ensure that their upcoming showcase matches expectations. 5. Tiffany Stratton (Prev: 2) The WWE Women's Champion still rules the roost on "SmackDown," churning out quality matches from one week to the next. Still, even her star presence wasn't enough to elevate a spot of questionable booking on Saturday, as the tag-team match (in which Stratton and Trish Stratus faced Nia Jax and Candice LeRae) emerged as the weak point of an otherwise exceptional PLE. 4. Jade Cargill (Prev: NR) How ferocious did the returning Jade Cargill look in Toronto, as she launched into a vicious attack on Naomi in the first big moment of Elimination Chamber? The star turn felt like a reset moment for the former AEW talent, whose previous booking in WWE didn't feel quite up-to-scratch. Let's hope this is the moment we get to capture the excitement that surrounded her initial signing all those months ago. 3. Toni Storm (Prev: 1) Toni Storm bagged our top spot last time around after a rousing performance in front of her home crowd to pick up gold at AEW Grand Slam. Now she gets to repeat the glory when she takes on Mariah May in a rematch at Sunday's Revolution pay-per-view. Given that Storm picked up her last win with a roll-up pin (a throwback to her run as 'The Rookie'), I suspect we'll see a more decisive win for the Aussie starlet this time around. 2. Iyo Sky (Prev: 10) After being unceremoniously tossed from this year's Rumble and left out of the Chamber, 'The Genius of the Sky' finally got her flowers with a massive win over Rhea Ripley on 'WWE Raw.' Though few saw it coming, Sky has consistently been an elite performer on the red brand and now gets the chance to dazzle the world at WrestleMania 41 by taking things to the next level. 1. Bianca Belair (Prev: NR) Liberated from the tag-team titles, Bianca Belair scored a statement victory at Elimination Chamber, returning to the very top of the singles division in a heartbeat. 'The EST' has never been far from the main event since her elevation from NXT in 2020, yet this run has the potential to be the most exciting yet. Perhaps we might even see that much-vaunted heel turn …
