Man charged with 37 counts of attempted murder for allegedly plowing through LA crowd

A man accused of intentionally plowing his car through a crowd in Los Angeles over the weekend has been charged with 37 counts of attempted murder, officials announced Tuesday. The suspect -- 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez -- has also been charged with 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, "the deadly weapon being the car," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said during a press briefing announcing the filing of the charges. MORE: At least 30 injured after car plows into crowd outside music venue in Los Angeles The counts correspond to the 37 victims in the incident, which unfolded around 2 a.m. local time Saturday outside the music venue The Vermont in East Hollywood, Hochman said. Among the victims, eight suffered "great bodily injury," such as serious fractures and lacerations, the district attorney said. "We understand that this brazen act has shaken the community," Hochman said during the press briefing. "As alleged, and we will prove in a court of law, when he drove that car onto that sidewalk, he aimed it at a whole sea of pedestrians that were in front of him on the sidewalk at 2 a.m. Many of them were at the taco truck, or they were waiting at the valet, or they were waiting to get into the club." Over the weekend, senior investigators told ABC News the crash occurred after the suspect had been removed from the nightclub. He then intentionally drove his vehicle onto a sidewalk and into the crowd gathered outside the club, police said. During Tuesday's briefing, Los Angeles Fire Department Interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva described the scene as "incredibly chaotic and distressing." "It's truly a miracle no one was killed," Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said. MORE: 'American Idol' music supervisor and husband killed with their own gun: DA When the vehicle became disabled, bystanders in the crowd dragged the driver outside the car and began to physically assault him, according to police. At some point during the altercation, police said a man shot the driver once in the lower back then fled the scene on foot. After being treated at a hospital, Ramirez was initially booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, Hochman said. If convicted as charged, the suspect faces multiple sentences of life in state prison. Ramirez has an "extensive history of violence," McDonnell said. At the time of the incident, he was out on bail in connection with a 2022 domestic violence case in Orange County, according to Hochman, who declined further comment on the matter at this time. The unidentified person who shot the driver remains at large, police said Tuesday. "We understand the emotions involved, but when the threat had ended and the suspect was no longer actively harming others, the use of deadly force was both unlawful and dangerous to everybody present," McDonnell said. "Our detectives are working diligently to identify and apprehend the shooter."

31 Injured in Car Crash in Los Angeles

Israa Farhan A devastating car crash in Los Angeles early Sunday morning has left 31 people injured, including several in critical condition, after a vehicle drove into a crowd of pedestrians. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, more than 100 firefighters rushed to the scene. At least three individuals were critically injured, while six others sustained serious wounds. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash, though initial police investigations suggest the driver may have lost consciousness before striking the crowd. The vehicle reportedly mounted the pavement where a line of people was standing, also hitting a mobile Mexican food vendor and a clothing rack. However, these details remain unverified. The crash occurred near high-traffic locations, including Sunset Boulevard and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The area is known for heavy footfall, particularly during late-night hours. Shocking footage posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) showed emergency crews blocking off the road and transporting victims to nearby hospitals. The grey vehicle involved was seen heavily damaged, having come to a stop on the sidewalk outside a popular entertainment venue known as The Vermont. CNN reported that the collision happened shortly before 2:00 am local time and near a local concert hall. Authorities have yet to release information about the driver's identity or confirm whether intoxication or mechanical failure played a role in the incident. The crash has renewed concerns over pedestrian safety in nightlife districts, especially in areas known for large crowds and late-night gatherings. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

US: LA car ramming driver shot, hospitalised, police say

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said on Saturday that a man suspected of driving a car into a crowd in Hollywood had been hospitalized and was undergoing surgery. The car ramming took place in the early hours of Saturday at the entrance of a nightclub. Some 30 people were injured in the incident. Authorities said the man was shot during the incident, although it was unclear whether he was shot before or after he drove into the crowd. "He was transported to the hospital, he's undergoing surgery, he is in stable condition. However, he is not free to leave, he is in the custody of Los Angeles Police Department, and we're looking at charges such as attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon at this point," LAPD official Lillian Carranza told US broadcaster CBS, referring to the driver. The driver, a 29-year-old man, was later charged with assault with a deadly weapon, according to police. What do we know about the ramming? The incident took place outside The Vermont nightclub, just before 2 a.m. local time (0900 GMT/UTC), the LA fire and police departments said. The venue was reportedly hosting a reggae/hip hop event. People were queuing for the nightclub next to a taco cart and a valet queue when the ramming occurred. A fire department spokesperson said the car appeared to first have targeted a food truck outside the nightclub, then it went through a valet parking stand and finally into a large group of people waiting to enter the venue, mostly women. "When officers arrived, they found the driver being assaulted by bystanders and determined he had sustained a gunshot wound," a police statement said. The LA Police Department said the incident was still being investigated. A man suspected of shooting the driver fled the scene on foot, police said. He was possibly armed with a silver revolver. The shooter is still at large and a manhunt is underway. The LA Fire Department said some 23 people were taken to local hospitals due to the car ramming. Bass said seven were in critical condition while others were treated at the scene. Mayor Karen Bass said the incident was "a heartbreaking tragedy' and thanked "more than 100 LAFD and LAPD personnel who responded to the scene to help to save lives.'
