The War Between the Land and the Sea: Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey Star in Trailer for Doctor Who Spinoff

Concurrent with the release of Doctor Who's twist-filled season finale, we also got a first trailer for the spinoff series The War Between the Land and the Sea, seen below. Announced back in July 2024, the five-part series stars Russell Tovey (Quantico) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki) alongside fellow franchise vets Jemma Redgrave (as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart) and Alexander Devrient (as Colonel Ibrahim). Spinoff creator Russell T Davies, though, has made clear they're playing new roles: 'This is not Midshipman Frame teaming up with Tish Jones.' Rather, Mbatha-Raw's character, a Sea Devil, is named Salt (heh), while Tovey's is Barclay. The full cast, revealed in August, also includes Ruth Madeley, reprising her Doctor Who role as UNIT Scientific Advisor Shirley-Anne Bingham, and Colin McFarlane, reprising his Torchwood: Children of Earth role as General Austin Pierce. The title of this offshoot was teased in the May 2024 Doctor Who episode 73 Yards, where Fifteen observed, 'The rocks and the water, it never ends — the war between the land and the sea'. The premise: 'When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.' Said species is in fact the Sea Devils, classic Doctor Who villains that made their first splash in 1972. 'They wake up, and they see the state of the oceans that we have put it in,' Russell previewed. 'We have wrecked the place, and it is war, war on an epic scale.' Davies, the current Doctor Who showrunner, created the spinoff and penned it with Pete McTighe (A Discovery of Witches, Doctor Who). Dylan Holmes-Williams (director of Doctor Who's '73 Yards' and 'Dot and Bubble') directed. The spinoff will air exclusively on Disney+ where available, and BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK. Doctor Who Mystery Is Finally Explained In Finale

Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies has revealed that the upcoming season finale will clear up one mystery that's been surrounding the show for the last few years. In 2023, Ncuti Gatwa 's Fifteenth Doctor took over at the helm of the Tardis in the long-running sci-fi series ' first ever 'bi-generation', in which he literally split from his predecessor, played by David Tennant. Ever since, fans have been speculating about exactly what this choice meant – and it sounds like answers may be coming in the next few days. On Monday, Russell shared a teaser for the upcoming Doctor Who finale, prompting one fan to question if an 'explanation for bi-generation' was on the horizon. 'Actually, yes!' the writer responded in the comments. After the upcoming season finale, the future of Doctor Who is looking a little unclear, amid reports that the show could be 'rested' at the end of the current series. Last week, the BBC shut down reports suggesting that Ncuti had been 'axed' from the show, which came months after it was first claimed in the tabloid press he'd be stepping down from his role as The Doctor later this year. 'Any suggestion that Ncuti Gatwa has been 'axed' is pure fiction,' a spokesperson told HuffPost UK. They added: 'As we have previously stated, the decision on season three will be made after season two airs and any other claims are just pure speculation.' Pointing out that a co-production deal with Disney + was always due to end after 26 episodes – and that there's still 'an entire spin off, The War Between The Land And The Sea' to air later this year – the BBC rep concluded: 'As for the rest, we never comment on The Doctor and future storylines.'

BBC announces new writing team for Ncuti Gatwa's second series of Doctor Who

A new team of writers has been announced for the second series of Doctor Who starring Ncuti Gatwa. In his first series as the time-travelling alien, Sex Education star Gatwa, 32, explored the universe with new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) in episodes written by showrunner Russell T Davies and others. Among the new group of writers is This Book Is Gay author Juno Dawson, who created the first official Doctor Who-scripted podcast, and Pete McTighe, who is a writer and executive producer for forthcoming spin-off The War Between The Land And The Sea. McTighe also wrote Doctor Who episode Kerblam! while Chris Chibnall was at the helm. McTighe said: 'The Tardis is my home away from home, so it's been a joy to step back inside, with Russell at the console and the incredible team at Bad Wolf hanging on for dear life. 'I love this show with all my heart, and am really proud of what we've been able to achieve with my next episode.' Dawson said: 'I started watching Doctor Who with my grandma when I was 10 years old in the 1990s. 'From writing fan fiction for an audience of one to scripting the best TV show of all time is truly a dream come true. I can't wait for fans and newcomers to see the new season.' Screenwriter Sharma Angel-Walfall and writer and curator Inua Ellams have also written for the forthcoming series. Angel-Walfall said: 'I am buzzing to be a part of such an iconic show. 'I am a massive Russell T Davies fan, so it is a dream come true to be able to work alongside him, especially on a show that I love. 'It's a real privilege to be a part of the Doctor Who family. I have loved every minute.' Ellams added: 'For as long as I can remember television, I've been a Doctor Who fan. I started watching when I was 10 in Nigeria. 'The show invited me to dream, to live beyond my reality. Getting to write for the show felt like touching God; it was blasphemously humbling and exciting, and I can't wait to share my story with the world.' Davies said: 'Doctor Who takes its talent from a glittering galaxy of names, and these extraordinary writers span the skies. 'We've got old hands, new stars, voices from theatre, radio and literature, the whole works. It's the most wild and exciting season of Doctor Who yet, and I can't wait to unleash their brilliant work.' Gatwa's first series as the Time Lord premiered on May 11 last year with a double bill. The Christmas Day episode saw him star alongside Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan.
