Hear Waylon Jennings' Tender Cover of Fleetwood Mac's ‘Songbird'

Shooter Jennings unearthed his father Waylon Jennings' tender rendition of Fleetwood Mac's 'Songbird' Sunday to celebrate Father's Day. 'I've been waiting so long to share this with you,' Shooter wrote on Instagram Sunday. 'It hasn't been an easy road to get here, but it's been one that has given me a new purpose in life. I dug through my dad's old tapes and found a plethora of music by Waylon and the band at the peak of their abilities… I was able to make three albums out of it and Songbird is the first one.' On social media, Shooter Jennings detailed the records-making process, and how he enlisted surviving members from Waylon's backing band the Waylors (Jerry Bridges, Gordon Payne, and Careter and Barny Robertson) 'for the stuff that wasn't totally finished… to put the finishing touches on it.' Songbird, the first of the three posthumous Waylon albums, arrives October 3; the LP, 'a collection of recordings captured between 1973 and 1984 in various studios, produced by Waylon and Richie Albright and featuring his all-star band including Albright, Ralph Mooney, Tony Joe White, Jessi Colter and more,' is available to preorder now 'Songbird is the beginnings of Waylon's return to the modern world,' Shooter added. 'This is the first of three gifts from me to you: the fans that kept my father's voice, songs, and legacy alive all these years. The next few years are going to be full of some of the most exciting musical moments that the world never knew they were going to hear. I hope that these records bring the kind of joy to you that they have brought to me.' New music from country music legend to be released 23 years after his death

Fans of Waylon Jennings will get to hear new music from the country legend more than two decades after his death. The new project, containing previously unheard tracks produced from 1973 to 1984, is called 'Songbird.' The first of three unheard albums by Jennings, the project's tracks feature members of Jennings' backing band, The Waylors, along with guest appearances from Tony Joe White, Jessi Colter and more. Shooter Jennings, Waylon's son, explained how the project came to be in an Instagram post on June 15. 'In the summer of 2024, I began digging through and cataloging the hundreds of high-resolution multitrack transfers of my father's personal studio recordings,' he wrote. 'What I found was an audio record of an incredibly profound artist and his legendary band through their peak period of creative expansion,' Scooter continued. 'There was so much inside, my mind was blown! These weren't demos, these were songs that were out with the intention of releasing, and as time went on, not all of them found places on that album that Waylon and the Waylors were releasing at the time.' After spending months digging through the tapes, Scooter enlisted the help of veteran engineer Nate Haessly to remaster the recordings. He also called up the remaining Waylors (Jerry Bridges, Carter and Barny Robertson and Gordon Payne) to put the final touches on the work. As the albums get released, Scooter promised fans that the next few years will 'be full of some of the most exciting musical moments' from his father's career. 'This project has given me an entirely new chapter in my relationship with my father and working on this music has brought a whole new understanding about how, when and why my dad made music,' Scooter wrote. 'The hard work is there on the tapes and the passion and the soul within is as alive today as it was the day it was recorded. Enough explaining, just put the damn record on … and remember: Waylon Jennings is Still the King!' 'Songbird's' title track was released on June 15 and is available on streaming platforms. The entire album will be released on Oct. 3. Inspiring the likes of Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings was considered a pioneer of the outlaw movement in country music in the 1970s. By rejecting the genre's typical standards, Jennings 'became one of the most significant country forces of the '70s, helping the genre adhere to its hardcore honky tonk roots,' according to AllMusic. Jennings released more than 40 albums over his decades-long career, several of which have been certified either gold or platinum by the RIAA. The country legend also released nearly 100 singles that have landed on several charts. Jennings died on Feb. 13, 2002, at his home in Arizona. A year before, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and was posthumously awarded the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award by the Academy of Country Music in 2007.
